Please find below a boot log for 5.2.1-RELEASE install CD. My hardware configuration is: Compaq Proliant 1600 server BIOS P08 (04/21/1999) Pentium II 400 MHz 256M RAM SMART-2DH RAID controller (rev.C, firmware ver.4.50, 16M cache) When booting normally (with vidconsole), it fails like this: Mounting root from ufs:/dev/md0 /stand/sysinstall running as init on serial console panic: unknown/reserved trap cpuid = 0 .... This is a log I captured via serial console. It got slightly further - up to the main sysinstall screen, but locked after that - no selection can be made. I would appreciate any help resolving this issue. I have several similar servers and wanted to install 5.2.1 on all of them. Please let me know if you need any additional info. Can you try the following tweaks to the BIOS setup: 1) Ensure that PnP OS is set to "no" 2) If there are settings related to the MPTable that say something like "full table" or "shortened table" try using the "full table" option. 3) Enable USB in the BIOS if it is disabled. -- John Baldwin <jhb@FreeBSD.org> <>< http://www.FreeBSD.org/~jhb/ "Power Users Use the Power to Serve" = http://www.FreeBSD.org From owner-freebsd-qa@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Aug 20 06:21:01 2004 Return-Path: <owner-freebsd-qa@FreeBSD.ORG> Delivered-To: freebsd-qa@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4F17716A4CE for <freebsd-qa@FreeBSD.org>; Fri, 20 Aug 2004 06:21:01 +0000 (GMT) Received: from outpost.globcon.net (outpost.globcon.net [62.141.88.161]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 4CAF143D5A for <freebsd-qa@FreeBSD.org>; Fri, 20 Aug 2004 06:21:00 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from sergei@FreeBSD.org) Received: (qmail 68349 invoked by uid 911); 20 Aug 2004 06:20:59 -0000 Date: Fri, 20 Aug 2004 10:20:59 +0400 From: Sergei Kolobov <sergei@FreeBSD.org> To: John Baldwin <jhb@FreeBSD.org> Message-ID: <20040820062059.GC42719@globcon.net> References: <200408181610.i7IGASqu040047@freefall.freebsd.org> <200408181533.33980.jhb@FreeBSD.org> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <200408181533.33980.jhb@FreeBSD.org> User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.1i cc: freebsd-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org cc: freebsd-qa@FreeBSD.org Subject: Re: kern/47451: 5.0 GENERIC(sysinstall CD) locks during boot onProliant ML530 X-BeenThere: freebsd-qa@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: FreeBSD Quality Assurance <freebsd-qa.freebsd.org> List-Unsubscribe: <http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-qa>, <mailto:freebsd-qa-request@freebsd.org?subject=unsubscribe> List-Archive: <http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-qa> List-Post: <mailto:freebsd-qa@freebsd.org> List-Help: <mailto:freebsd-qa-request@freebsd.org?subject=help> List-Subscribe: <http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-qa>, <mailto:freebsd-qa-request@freebsd.org?subject=subscribe> X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 20 Aug 2004 06:21:01 -0000 On 2004-08-18 at 15:33 -0400, John Baldwin wrote: > On Wednesday 18 August 2004 12:10 pm, Sergei Kolobov wrote: > > uhci0: <Intel 82371AB/EB (PIIX4) USB controller> port 0-0x1f at device > > 20.2 on pci0 pcib0: unable to route slot 20 INTD > > uhci0: Could not allocate irq > > device_probe_and_attach: uhci0 attach returned 6 > > This might be indicative of the problem. Remember - this is Compaq hardware, and they have nothing even distantly resembling "normal" Award/Phoenix BIOS. Instead, you have to use that (EISA) System Configuration Utility from the System Partition or SmartStart CD-ROM. > 2) If there are settings related to the MPTable that say something like "full > table" or "shortened table" try using the "full table" option. Nothing like that was found. > 3) Enable USB in the BIOS if it is disabled. There no USB-related option at all. In fact, there are *NO* USB ports in this server (it is circa '98-99). Isn't it funny the kernel found some USB controller, is it? Believe it or not, but I was finally able to install 5.2.1 on this hardware. After you mentioned that USB might be causing this, I have compiled a custom kernel on another 5.x machine (which happened to be my laptop running a recent -CURRENT) and put it on the kernel floppy, replacing GENERIC in kernel.gz. Voila - it booted without a problem, and I was able to use sysinstall on regular console (as opposed to serial console I had to use to capture the previous boot log). What I still do not understand - why then it would boot the same GENERIC kernel without a problem when the system was already installed? What is the difference between the boot process for install CD/floppy and the installed system? Isn't it funny the kernel found some USB controller, is it? Believe it or not, but I was finally able to install 5.2.1 on this hardware. After you mentioned that USB might be causing this, I have compiled a custom kernel on another 5.x machine (which happened to be my laptop running a recent -CURRENT) and put it on the kernel floppy, replacing GENERIC in kernel.gz. Voila - it booted without a problem, and I was able to use sysinstall on regular console (as opposed to serial console I had to use to capture the previous boot log). The 5.2.1 install floppies don't use GENERIC but a stripped down kernel. The install CD should use GENERIC though if you boot off of the CD and don't use any floppies. -- John Baldwin <jhb@FreeBSD.org> <>< http://www.FreeBSD.org/~jhb/ "Power Users Use the Power to Serve" = http://www.FreeBSD.org From owner-freebsd-qa@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Aug 20 18:10:24 2004 Return-Path: <owner-freebsd-qa@FreeBSD.ORG> Delivered-To: freebsd-qa@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E807816A4CE for <freebsd-qa@hub.freebsd.org>; Fri, 20 Aug 2004 18:10:24 +0000 (GMT) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BEC0F43D1D for <freebsd-qa@hub.freebsd.org>; Fri, 20 Aug 2004 18:10:24 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.12.11/8.12.11) with ESMTP id i7KIAOmO046711 for <freebsd-qa@freefall.freebsd.org>; Fri, 20 Aug 2004 18:10:24 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.12.11/8.12.11/Submit) id i7KIAOPc046710; Fri, 20 Aug 2004 18:10:24 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Date: Fri, 20 Aug 2004 18:10:24 GMT Message-Id: <200408201810.i7KIAOPc046710@freefall.freebsd.org> To: freebsd-qa@FreeBSD.org From: John Baldwin <jhb@FreeBSD.org> Subject: Re: kern/47451: 5.0 GENERIC(sysinstall CD) locks during boot onProliant ML530 X-BeenThere: freebsd-qa@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list Reply-To: John Baldwin <jhb@FreeBSD.org> List-Id: FreeBSD Quality Assurance <freebsd-qa.freebsd.org> List-Unsubscribe: <http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-qa>, <mailto:freebsd-qa-request@freebsd.org?subject=unsubscribe> List-Archive: <http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-qa> List-Post: <mailto:freebsd-qa@freebsd.org> List-Help: <mailto:freebsd-qa-request@freebsd.org?subject=help> List-Subscribe: <http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-qa>, <mailto:freebsd-qa-request@freebsd.org?subject=subscribe> X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 20 Aug 2004 18:10:25 -0000 The following reply was made to PR kern/47451; it has been noted by GNATS.
