Hello,

I need some recommendations for a DLT drive for use with 
FreeBSD 4.8 STABLE. 

	dmesg(8) output attched.

We are using a COMPAQ SuperDLT1 4B4B Removable Sequential Access
SCSI-2 device, which is causing no end of problems. And we want to buy
something that works well with FreeBSD.

I have trawled the archives and the handbook and these deal mostly with
problems with specific drives rather than recommendations.

i'm considering purchasing raid controllers bundled with some dell 1750's.

the current raid controller's offered by dell with these devices are:
	perc 4/di
	perc 4/dc

the perc 4/di seems to be an embedded megaraid device which is supported
by the amr driver:

i found a mail to mlist.freebsd.scsi on google which states that the perc
4/dc is a megaraid 518 series and that its been supported since version
4.7.

are both these raid controller's megaraid devices? are both supported in
recent versions of freebsd?

if so, why is the "perc 4/dc" not listed in the hardware list?

also, with regard to amr devices:
	will all controller problems result in a syslog being generated?

	is there a management utility to perform rebuilds from the os etc.?

btw do people have an opinion on the raid controller with best freebsd
support(fully functional driver/mgmt utilities)?

Hi all,
    I want to write a scsi target driver to send some vendor specific commands to the scsi disk. For that I have modified the scsi_target.c. But it doesn't seems to be loading properly. I've given printf's to all the functions. But it doesn't printing the printf for init() function itself. 
 
Do you have any idea, if I need to add anything in the existing scsi_target.c available in sys/cam/scsi dir. 
 
How can we register a scsi driver module to the cam interface.
 
Is there any document where I can look to the flow of the driver calls. ?
 
Any pointer would be of great help ...

Uh, who is sending the commands? Is the initiator sending a vendor
specific command that the target driver passes along to the disk? Or,
is the CAM/SIM driver receiving a command and translating it into a
vendor specific command? Can you describe your setup a little bit
more?

Which HBA are you using (QLogic, ...)? Is the backing store the SCSI
Disk Emulator (share/examples/scsi_target) or something else?

It looks very similar to the initiator case that is documented (i.e.
xpt_bus_register()). One difference is that the driver needs to set
the target_sprt variable in the ccb->cpi structure. See the isp(4)
driver for an example.

Use the code ;)

I'm not 100% sure on this, but my understanding is that the disk
emulator tells the CAM target driver how many IO's it can handle by
allocating and sending ccb_accept_tio structures to the driver via
write().

Once the SIM driver receives a CDB, it copies the CDB info to one of
the ATIO structures and completes the command with xpt_done().

Hi All,
I am in the process of writing a scsi target driver on FreeBSD 4.7,
as a module.  I have faced some problems like, registering the
module with CAM, probing the scsi devices connected to the host etc.,
I'm from the world of linux, wherein if I register the scsi device
driver module ( not the HBA ), using scsi_register_module(...)
I will get the Scsi_Device *SDp to my template implementations
like init, detect, attach, detach, finish.
 
On FreeBSD, there must be the way to do the same kinda thing,
by registering my module with CAM layer.  If anyone could
throw some light, that would be of great help.

To reiterate Chuck's question, could you state exactly how you intend to
use the system?  Your statement of "probing the SCSI devices connected to
the host" almost sounds like you're talking about using SCSI passthrough,
not SCSI target-mode.

I agree that it's frustrating to go from writing Linux modules to thinking
about FreeBSD modules (I looked at writing FreeBSD modules briefly, and
then threw my hands up in the air and decided to go another route).
However, in my experience the existing scsi_target kernel-mode and
user-mode code division results in a pretty flexible setup -- and give
much of the benefits of using a module:

- You can start and stop the user-mode code at will, similar to loading
and unloading a module.  You can also recompile the user-mode code and
restart it without rebooting the system.  (Of course, you can't do this
for the kernel code without a module; perhaps that's what you want...)

- Every time you start the user-mode code (from
usr/share/examples/scsi_target) you specify which LUN on which device on
which bus you're emulating, which is similar to passing options at module
load time.

Anyway, before you commit yourself to slogging through building a new
module, I recommend taking another look at the existing
sys/cam/scsi/scsi_target code and the usr/share/examples/scsi_target
user-mode code to see if they can't be adapted to your purposes.  At a
minimum, perhaps you'll only need to rewrite the user-mode code.

I have a Dell PowerEdge 2400 with dual 733 Mhx CPUs.  I have tried to 
install  several distros of Linux (Red Hat 9.0 and Gentoo 1.4) and 
FreeBSD 4.8, 5.0 and while I can get the kernels to recognize the 
Adaptec 7890 and the Adaptec 7880 and use my scsi CDROM, when I fdisk 
to try to create partitions, I receive a unable to find /dev/sda
