I am thinking of netbooting as what a diskless client would do. If this is indeed correct, that is unfortunate, because I am going to have to go with OpenBSD, as I am tired of Solaris where everything is twice as difficult as it needs to be. Any insight inot this would be greatly appreciated. The scsi controller on the Ultra2 should now be supported. It isn't supported in a -RELEASE yet, but will be in the upcoming 5.3-R.. There is currently 5.3-BETA2 available if you don't want to install from source... -- John-Mark Gurney Voice: +1 415 225 5579 "All that I will do, has been done, All that I have, has not." I just installed 5.3 beta2 on my Ultra2 and I am not able to log into the box remotely via ssh. I am trying to log in with a user that I created, eg. not root. What I get is: "unable to authenticate using any of the configured authentication methods" The reason that I post this hdere is because before the system comes up, there was a screen asking for random characters to be typed in. What client are you trying to connect from? We see similar issues here when students try to connect using old/out-dated SSH client software running on their PC's. Having them update it to something more recent usually gets rid of this problem. -- Ken Smith - From there to here, from here to | kensmith@cse.buffalo.edu there, funny things are everywhere. | - Theodore Geisel | From owner-freebsd-sparc64@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Sep 6 04:40:02 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3122416A4CE; Mon, 6 Sep 2004 04:40:02 +0000 (GMT) Received: from ns.kt-is.co.kr (ns.kt-is.co.kr [211.218.149.125]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8F83943D1D; Mon, 6 Sep 2004 04:40:01 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from yongari@kt-is.co.kr) Received: from michelle.kt-is.co.kr (ns2.kt-is.co.kr [220.76.118.193]) (authenticated bits=128) by ns.kt-is.co.kr (8.12.10/8.12.10) with ESMTP id i864XLAh093464 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA bits=256 verify=FAIL); Mon, 6 Sep 2004 13:33:21 +0900 (KST) Received: from michelle.kt-is.co.kr (localhost.kt-is.co.kr [127.0.0.1]) by michelle.kt-is.co.kr (8.12.10/8.12.10) with ESMTP id i864dwNp001164 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA bits=256 verify=NO); Mon, 6 Sep 2004 13:39:58 +0900 (KST) (envelope-from yongari@kt-is.co.kr) Received: (from yongari@localhost) by michelle.kt-is.co.kr (8.12.10/8.12.10/Submit) id i864dwMX001163; Mon, 6 Sep 2004 13:39:58 +0900 (KST) (envelope-from yongari@kt-is.co.kr) Date: Mon, 6 Sep 2004 13:39:58 +0900 From: Pyun YongHyeon To: Hiroki Sato Message-ID: <20040906043958.GC752@kt-is.co.kr> References: <20040905.054615.27776951.hrs@eos.ocn.ne.jp> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20040905.054615.27776951.hrs@eos.ocn.ne.jp> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.1i X-Filter-Version: 1.11a (ns.kt-is.co.kr) cc: sparc64@freebsd.org Subject: Re: 5.3-BETA works on Naturetech 777S X-BeenThere: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list Reply-To: yongari@kt-is.co.kr List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the Sparc List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 06 Sep 2004 04:40:02 -0000 On Sun, Sep 05, 2004 at 05:46:15AM +0900, Hiroki Sato wrote: > Hi, > > I tried 5.3-BETA2 on my sparc64 laptop[*] and it worked! > The dmesg is attached. > > [*] http://www.dciplano.com/p777.html > > However, console (keyboard) is slow to respond and some of the > typed characters are randomly lost. > Do you have "option OFWCONS_POLL_HZ=20" in your kernel? > ata3: channel #1 on atapci0 > pci1: at device 2.0 (no driver attached) > pci1: at device 8.0 (no driver attached) ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Would let me know the exact model of sound hardware? For the past two nights, I notice alot of uninitiated isk activity because my disks are kinda loud. When i do a top, I see find running. I kill it and then sendmail starts up....this is very scary. And I am about to use this as a web server. I am not sure how to find out what is telling find to run. There is not cron jobs running, at least not roots. What can I do to find out what is going on here? Is there some type of facility that freebsd uses to report to usage or stats to some type of central db due to its beta status? concerned, Bob From owner-freebsd-sparc64@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Sep 8 00:03:28 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id EE72616A4CE for ; Wed, 8 Sep 2004 00:03:28 +0000 (GMT) Received: from electra.cse.Buffalo.EDU (electra.cse.Buffalo.EDU [128.205.32.2]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9BD6E43D58 for ; Wed, 8 Sep 2004 00:03:28 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from kensmith@cse.Buffalo.EDU) Received: from electra.cse.Buffalo.EDU (kensmith@localhost [127.0.0.1]) i8803RTH024554; Tue, 7 Sep 2004 20:03:27 -0400 (EDT) Received: (from kensmith@localhost) by electra.cse.Buffalo.EDU (8.12.10/8.12.9/Submit) id i8803QVN024553; Tue, 7 Sep 2004 20:03:26 -0400 (EDT) Date: Tue, 7 Sep 2004 20:03:26 -0400 From: Ken Smith To: Bob Ababurko Message-ID: <20040908000326.GA24460@electra.cse.Buffalo.EDU> References: <5.2.1.1.0.20040907192340.01c31890@mail.dc2.adelphia.net> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <5.2.1.1.0.20040907192340.01c31890@mail.dc2.adelphia.net> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.1i cc: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Subject: Re: unknown process? Just let it go next time and then check email sent to the 'root' user when the disk activity dies down. It's checking for new set-uid files and other things related to the security check mail being sent. XFree86 had this problem (it was related to a hard-coded assumption of PC-style keyboard in one of the binaries). There was a patch submitted and incorporated that fixed it, but perhaps it still needs to be patched in x-org. Check the CVS history for the XFree86-Server port. I would recommend turning it off until someone's had a chance to look at the low-level interrupt code to see if it's ready for preemption. -- John Baldwin <>< http://www.FreeBSD.org/~jhb/ "Power Users Use the Power to Serve" = http://www.FreeBSD.org From owner-freebsd-sparc64@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Sep 9 15:43:31 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6D54816A4CF for ; Thu, 9 Sep 2004 15:43:31 +0000 (GMT) Received: from amsfep15-int.chello.nl (nl-ams-slo-l4-01-pip-8.chellonetwork.com [213.46.243.27]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 28BE243D49 for ; Thu, 9 Sep 2004 15:43:30 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from kwm@rainbow-runner.nl) Received: from prisma.rainbow-runner.nl ([84.119.207.55]) by amsfep15-int.chello.nlESMTP <20040909154328.SYYQ15729.amsfep15-int.chello.nl@prisma.rainbow-runner.nl>; Thu, 9 Sep 2004 17:43:28 +0200 Received: by prisma.rainbow-runner.nl (Postfix, from userid 2006) id E1DC8211F; Thu, 9 Sep 2004 17:39:23 +0200 (CEST) Received: from [192.168.1.5] (unknown [192.168.1.5]) by prisma.rainbow-runner.nl (Postfix) with ESMTP id B69982072; Thu, 9 Sep 2004 17:39:20 +0200 (CEST) From: Koop Mast To: Ken Smith In-Reply-To: <20040909121246.GC17338@electra.cse.Buffalo.EDU> References: <20040909121246.GC17338@electra.cse.Buffalo.EDU> Content-Type: text/plain Date: Thu, 09 Sep 2004 17:43:04 +0200 Message-Id: <1094744584.642.8.camel@heater.rainbow-runner.nl> Mime-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Evolution 1.5.94.1FreeBSD GNOME Team Port Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 2.64 (2004-01-11) on prisma.rainbow-runner.nl X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Status: No, hits=-4.6 required=5.0 tests=AWL,BAYES_00 autolearn=ham version=2.64 cc: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Subject: Re: HEADS-UP: Be careful with newest GENERIC... After changing my kernel config to add the 4BSD scheduler and PREEMPTION options on my Ultra10 and rebuilding the kernel. I put the machine on a make -j 2 buildworld. After I got back from school I found the machine totally wedged, not a kernel panic or any thing on the screen (I run with a monitor and keyboard attached). It's part of XFree 4.4 and Xorg 6.7 but I don't get why this was sufficient to make Sun keyboards on FreeBSD working. Both XFree and Xorg have two keyboard drivers, the old "built-in keyboard driver" and the new "kbd" driver with MD modules. Both drivers basically assumes that every key- board is a PC/AT one on FreeBSD. I think part of the explanation why the XFree port works is that it uses the new driver while the Xorg port uses the old one. Actually both "drivers" are splattered over a lot of source and it's a bit hard to get which snippet belonges to what driver. I also didn't find the knob to use either the old or the new one, yet. I wrote an email to Eric hoping he has more insight and could help clarify this but didn't get an answer, yet. I got confused when looking at different PLISTs and mistakenly thought the XFree server ports would compile the new driver while the Xorg port usese the old one and therefore was searching for a compile- time option. > > Does switching between those two result in any difference? No. With an unchanged xorg-server-6.7.0_7 Sun keyboards work with neither of the two keyboard drivers under FreeBSD. With my patch for f86Events.c the old one works but the new one still doesn't (sort of expected from the code). Ok, I now completely don't understand why the old driver did work in XFree, i.e. why the old patch for f86Events.c was sufficient.
