I'm running 5.2.1 systems with a vinum mirrored swap this way: - prepare a vinum mirrored drive - create an UFS filesystem on it - create a large file of ~90% of the file systems size - swap to that There is a performance penalty when swapping to plain files instead of a dedicated disk, but IMHO a properly sized system should rarely swap at all.
