You may be thinking of the modular x effort, which is unfortunately still some time off before it'll be releasable for general use. Not having to touch bsd.port.mk is definitely a feature. My concerns: - having about 2n ports if we go the modular route instead of just n. - getting a meta category made (how much work is this?) - time -- we're looking at getting the switch done for 5.3, so I want the tree to be stable WRT X before the freeze happens. Are there any efforts going on to provide some sort of "capabilities" that ports could set and others could depend on? I guess in this case it's all shlibs and binaries anyway, so the only difference is the ability to swap out the providers of capabilities without pkgdb mess. Hmmm. Bah, it's late. I'll have to sleep on this one. Please allow me to abuse this to jump at You with more questions. Do I understand You correctly that: 1) Soon (before end of July) ports will have a system that allows to use either X.org or XFree86, at users choice. 2) Soon (before end of July) dri will get updated in ports. 3) Soon (before end of July) Xfree86-4-clients gets a patch that repairs xdm under FreeBSD-4.10. 4) Soon (see above) XFree86 will get upgraded to 4.4(.0). 5) There is no need for helping hands, as the most competent persons are already working their ass off to get everything done right (tm). I didn't check nor realized that if xorg-lib already has libXrender, I just ammused that it needs libXrender so it's why I asked and never gave the enough detail. The users choice between XFree86 and X.Org will be possible with the patch Eric Anholt posted in thread "dependency fixing for xorg stuff". The patch for xdm should be there when XFree86 ports are upgraded to 4.4. As for when will this happen, I would really rather not try to guess. And I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking that there's always need for helping hands :) Although these answers are probably not entirely what you were hoping for, it's more or less all I can sayright now. Well, I'm pushing _for_ it to happen, and will try to do a run here to see that all the patches work. But I don't, personally, have the ability to kick off a bento run myself, so I can't offer any guarantees. Even a successful run on my own machine is a long way away from a successful run on all the various releases and architectures. Requires: xrender ... therefor i think this i a xorg-libraries bug. franz. Checking the logs after rebooting reveals nothing at all out of the ordinary. The box just "seizes up" and that's that. Only thing to do is a power-down and restart. Changing from SCHED_ULE to SCHED_4BSD appears to make no difference at all. My other box, an older (32-bit) Athlon, has been rock stable. I've been keeping both machines updated simultaneously to exactly the same revisions, using as near-identical system settings as possible also, the main difference being I'm running X.org/GNOME on the amd64 box and no X on the i386 box. Any suggestions? Instinct tells me it may be a problem with some of the ports I'm running (X.org/GNOME, hence the Cc:s), but how to verify? Sure, I could run without X a while and see how it goes, but that still won't help to isolate the problem, if it is, in fact, port-related. Thanks. -- Conrad J. I've had the same problem, but not the time to look into it. You may want to try to telnet, ssh, or use the serial port. I'm not sure, but it seems the machine is still running but X is locked up solid and ctl-alt-f1 doesn't work. Serial port access would be your best bet. The lockups started for me after the native preemption stuff was added in. You'll need to use a serial console and DDB to debug these problems.=20 See http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/serialconsole-set= up.html on setting that up. Once the machine breaks into the debugger, you= 'll be able to get a stack trace. If this is a nvidia card, turn off the screen saver... there appears to be a GL problem with the nvidia driver that seems to cuase them to lock up occasionally... or least that has been my experience with xscreensaver on both XFree86 and Xorg. Does build of im= ake=20 fail if you go to /usr/ports/devel/imake-4 and do a make build? Do you=20 already have perl installed, and if so what version of perl is it? My machine is the sony vaio PCG-GRT915M. It ships with GeForce FX Go5600. I've installed the last freebsd nvidia-driver port with WITH_NVIDIA_HACKS=yes option. If I use only the LCD monitor all works fine (for now). The problems come up when I want to use LCD+CRT or LCD+TV both in the TWINVIEW mode off and on. In these cases X starts correctly but when I exit from X then my machine freezes and I see strange colors on my LCD. I've noted another matter also. If I start X with Option "ConnectedMonitor" "CRT", I can see X on CRT only (the LCD is inactive) but when I exit from X the video signal doesn't return on my LCD. Anyway the system is still up in this case and I can run command (blindly) on the virtual console and restart the machine. The same thing happens with TV device. It is as good as the nvidia-driver doesn't reopen the LCD device. Will anybody help me to solve this problem? thanks. mark@vaio # sysctl -a hw.nvidia hw.nvidia.agp.card.rates: 8x 4x hw.nvidia.agp.card.fw: supported hw.nvidia.agp.card.sba: supported hw.nvidia.agp.card.registers: 0x1f000e1b:0x1f004102 hw.nvidia.agp.status.status: enabled hw.nvidia.agp.status.driver: nvidia hw.nvidia.agp.status.rate: 8x hw.nvidia.agp.status.fw: disabled hw.nvidia.agp.status.sba: disabled hw.nvidia.version: NVIDIA FreeBSD x86 nvidia.ko Kernel Module 1.0-4365 Wed May 28 09:20:25 PDT 2003 hw.nvidia.registry.EnableVia4x: 0 hw.nvidia.registry.EnableALiAGP: 0 hw.nvidia.registry.EnableAGPSBA: 0 hw.nvidia.registry.EnableAGPFW: 0 hw.nvidia.registry.SoftEDIDs: 1 hw.nvidia.registry.Mobile: 4294967295 hw.nvidia.registry.ResmanDebugLevel: 4294967295 hw.nvidia.registry.FlatPanelMode: 0 hw.nvidia.cards.0.model: GeForce FX Go5600 hw.nvidia.cards.0.irq: 4 hw.nvidia.cards.0.vbios: 04.31.20.37.b3 hw.nvidia.cards.0.type: AGP -- Marco Trentini mark@remotelab.org http://www.remotelab.org/ --oyUTqETQ0mS9luUI Content-Type: text/plain; Support for software as old as Netscape 4.76 is becoming quite problematic at this point. The problem isn't Netscape-specific. Netscape was used as a convenient example of an old FreeBSD binary. Other examples of commercial FreeBSD binaries could have been used as well, (ie: Billmax) but wern't in order to make the PR more comprehendible to the typical user that would be reading it. Perhaps your just on an anti-old-Netscape crusade because your own website logs are still showing the majority of your site users haven't upgraded to the newer Netscape versions and your just dying to use the animated gifs/flash/ midifiles/[insert latest stupid html geegaw here] that the newer Netscape versions support? ;-) Keep in mind that netscape 4.76 is a convenient "canary in the coal mine". If something associated with getting it running is broken, then commercial FreeBSD applications that are distributed binary-only and that were built using a.out are going to be broken by that as well. Anyway, as both the problem and fix (ie: don't install aout libs in an xterm) are contained in the PR yes it should be closed. But it would also be responsible to insert a warning in the aoutlib port Makefile telling the user not to install them while X was running. That is after all what the PR was about.
