I was looking at pkg-message in the XFree86-4 port. Shouldn't there be
done a
s/XFREE86_VERSION=4/X_WINDOW_SYSTEM=xfree86-4/

In fact I was surprized when I tried FreeBSD-5.3 today and building
ports unexpectedly caused me to build xorg rather than xfree86-4. I did
find the info I needed in ports/UPDATING, but I do think that
XFree86-4/pkg-message should also be appropriately changed.

If a PR needs to be submitted, and no-one else has done so, I can do
this simple thing if needed.

Stephen

A couple of things:
xorg is the default X windows system in 5.3. You must explicitly say if you
want Xfree86. See below. Also, you are talking about two intentionally
separate directives. The one that asks XFREE86_VERSION was put in place
when Xfree86-4 came onto the scene and some people may have still preferred
version 4 over version 3. The X_WINDOW_SYSTEM directive lets you choose
between Xorg and Xfree86.

That is not quite right. My reading of ports/UPDATING is that
XFREE86_VERSION in /etc/make.conf currently does nothing.
X_WINDOW_VERSION can be set to xorg, xfree86-4 or xfree86-3. Right now,
a person moving from FreeBSD-4.x to FreeBSD-5.x is going to get a
surprize when they try installing any ports that use X Windows. When
they see this, the info they might read needs to be accurate, especially
if they want to stay with XFree86. What is written in ports/UPDATING is
good, but what is written in x11/XFree86-4/pkg-message is wrong. I was
mislead by it, and I imagine that so can other people.

XF86config log file and theres no errors at all not even any warnings. =
My .xinitrc file has exec startkde like is should. The only problem i =
see is there are no files in /etc/X11 execpt for the XF86config file. =
Unless FreeBSD puts its files in a diffrent spot. I did read a few posts =
that are simalar to this but none of them have the same problem i do. =
Heres links to my xf86config and xfree86.0log file

Hi,

When i type startx and the commandline the normal info starts scrolling across the screen. Then when kde is supposed to start it freezes. The computer doesnt freeze just that console. I can still ctrl+alt+del and reboot. I checked the XF86config log file and theres no errors at all not even any warnings. My .xinitrc file has exec startkde like is should. Why is the mouse protocol not at 'auto'?

Why did you disable freetype and xtt?

Hi,

would be nice, if the files listed at
http://pointyhat.freebsd.org/errorlogs/i386-5-latest-logs/extras.html
for xorg-* (mostly speaking of xorg-server) can be added to pkg-plist
before the freeze starts...

The xorg-server pkg-plist should be fixed by this commit:
http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/cvs-ports/2004-August/045102.html

Others are mostly directories that are missing from /etc/mtree/BSD.x11-4.dist
mtree file and trere are instances of manindex?.html that are indexes to all
html man pages in that directories, not only the ones installed by one
specific port so removing them would remove index to remaining htmls from
other (still installed) ports. (See also
http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-ports/2004-August/015459.html
about removing html manpages alltogether)
Are there any more I've missed here?

Hi,

ok.. looks like my portstree was outdated... sorry

By looking into xorg-clients/pkg-plist, I see that the port only deletes
the xdm/*.default files.
Would be nice to find a way to delete "file" as well when it is ==
"file.default". But that's not only a "problem" of xorg-clients.... So it
might be ok for now.

I just tried it[1], but XVideo still does not work (same error messages
 as before).

 But thanks for your suggestion.

[1] moved patch to files directory, recompiled port, restartet XServer

Hi,

x11/xorg-libraries conflicting with x11/servers_xorg-server

During pkg_deinstall I noticed:
pkg_delete: '/usr/X11R6/lib/libXfont.a' fails original MD5 checksum - not
deleted.
pkg_delete: '/usr/X11R6/lib/libfntstubs.a' fails original MD5 checksum -
not deleted.

Investigating the build-logs gave me:

port_x11-servers_xorg-server.log:
	[...]
	/usr/bin/install -c -m 0644 libXfont.a /usr/X11R6/lib
	ranlib /usr/X11R6/lib/libXfont.a
	+ /usr/bin/install -c -m 0755 libXfont.so.1 /usr/X11R6/lib
	+ rm -f /usr/X11R6/lib/libXfont.so
	+ ln -s libXfont.so.1 /usr/X11R6/lib/libXfont.so
	[...]

port_x11_xorg-libraries.log:
	[...]
	/usr/bin/install -c -m 0644 libXfont.a /usr/X11R6/lib
	ranlib /usr/X11R6/lib/libXfont.a
	+ /usr/bin/install -c -m 0755 libXfont.so.1 /usr/X11R6/lib
	+ rm -f /usr/X11R6/lib/libXfont.so
	+ ln -s libXfont.so.1 /usr/X11R6/lib/libXfont.so
	[...]

The same happens with /usr/X11R6/lib/libfntstubs.a

Would be nice if that can be fixed somehow....
