Unlikely if you still see it with beta releases. You should still try to boot a new kernel without ata, so we at least know if it is really related - so far it is only a theory. Just make a backup of your existing kernel - e.g. under /boot/kernel.work, fetch recent RELENG_5 source and do a make kernel KERNCONF=GENERIC.with-ata-removed -- B.Walter BWCT http://www.bwct.de bernd@bwct.de info@bwct.de From owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Mar 28 18:20:09 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D671516A4CE for ; Mon, 28 Mar 2005 18:20:09 +0000 (GMT) Received: from carter.lisco.com (carter.lisco.com [69.18.32.38]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id CF17F43D46 for ; Mon, 28 Mar 2005 18:20:06 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from freebsd@thebeatbox.org) Received: from [192.168.0.51] (69-18-56-205.lisco.net [69.18.56.205]) by carter.lisco.com (8.11.6/8.10.1) with ESMTP id j2SIK5916725 for ; Mon, 28 Mar 2005 12:20:06 -0600 (CST) Message-ID: <42484B06.5020509@thebeatbox.org> Date: Mon, 28 Mar 2005 12:20:54 -0600 From: Roland Wells User-Agent: Mozilla Thunderbird 1.0 (Windows/20041206) X-Accept-Language: en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Content-Type: multipart/mixed; boundary="------------020303030502020003070908" Subject: Alpha team, storm the front! I have been using FreeBSD for fun and production boxes for several years now (on i386). I am working on getting a couple Alpha boxes running right now. I'm working on systems based on the PC164SX atx motherboard. Right now I have 5.3 installed and running. I am connected over a serial console. When it boots it stops and asks for "mountroot>" at which I hit enter to abort manual input. (see attached log) (is this a function of booting to serial console or single-user mode?) It then askes for pathname of shell (hit enter again) which takes me to single-user mode I believe. Does this mean that the Alpha port is limited to boot into single-user at the moment or is it something specific to my situation or serial console? (this is the first time I have installed/connected to a FreeBSD over serial console.) I have attached a log of my box booting, anyone know what the following in my SRM section means? *** no timer interrupts on CPU 0 *** Also, there is a series of "Unrecognized boot flag" lines in the FreeBSD boot, should I be worried about them? I am not a programmer, (as of today) so I am not really able to help there, but I would like to work on documentation if needed, and I would be happy to test anything on my Alpha hardware if requested. Thanks for your time, Roland Wells --------------020303030502020003070908 Content-Type: text/plain; name="console_log.txt" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline; filename="console_log.txt" ff.fe.fd.fc.fb.fa.f9.f8.f7.f6.f5.f3.f2.f1.f0. ef.ee.ed.probing hose 0, PCI probing PCI-to-ISA bridge, bus 1 bus 0, slot 8, function 1 -- pka -- Cypress 82C693 IDE bus 0, slot 8, function 2 -- pkb -- Cypress 82C693 IDE ec.f4.eb.ea.e9.e8.e7. Yes. If you look closely, you see that 'n' and 's' are accepted as flags. The 'n' flag instructs the kernel to ask for the root file system and the 's' flag means to boot in single-user mode. So, you get what you asked for :-) *snip* > (boot dka0.0.0.108.0 -flags root=nfsroot) *snip* > Entering /boot/kernel/kernel at 0xfffffc0000344c30... > Unrecognized boot flag 'r'. > Unrecognized boot flag 'o'. > Unrecognized boot flag 'o'. > Unrecognized boot flag 't'. > Unrecognized boot flag '='. > Unrecognized boot flag 'f'. > Unrecognized boot flag 'r'. > Unrecognized boot flag 'o'. > Unrecognized boot flag 'o'. > Unrecognized boot flag 't'. *snip* -- Marcel Moolenaar USPA: A-39004 marcel@xcllnt.net From owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Mar 29 01:46:35 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0C97916A4CE for ; Tue, 29 Mar 2005 01:46:35 +0000 (GMT) Received: from carter.lisco.com (carter.lisco.com [69.18.32.38]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 86BCB43D39 for ; Tue, 29 Mar 2005 01:46:34 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from freebsd@thebeatbox.org) Received: from [192.168.0.51] (69-18-56-205.lisco.net [69.18.56.205]) by carter.lisco.com (8.11.6/8.10.1) with ESMTP id j2T1kQ901602; Mon, 28 Mar 2005 19:46:27 -0600 (CST) Message-ID: <4248B3A1.4040006@thebeatbox.org> Date: Mon, 28 Mar 2005 19:47:13 -0600 From: Roland Wells User-Agent: Mozilla Thunderbird 1.0 (Windows/20041206) X-Accept-Language: en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Marcel Moolenaar References: <42484B06.5020509@thebeatbox.org> <20050328213037.GA86043@ns1.xcllnt.net> In-Reply-To: <20050328213037.GA86043@ns1.xcllnt.net> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit cc: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Alpha team, storm the front! Today i do not have this error any more ... I see other thread (5.4b1 on Miata JoséM.Fandiño) trying to install FreeBSD in Miata too. In my Miata machine, i can install FreeBSD 5.3-RELEASE or 5.4-BETA snapshot with IDE Disk, but after that, when i try to boot the machine, i get a kernel crash. Then i change my approach to a SCSI DISK. I discovery that the scsi card only work in 64 bits slot pci, if i put the card in 32 bits slot pci the install crash. After that (scsi card in 64 bits slot pci), FreeBSD 5.3-RELEASE or 5.4- BETA snapshot work very well. Any suggest about the IDE problem ? 20:38:28 -0000 How can I check what packages are included in the base install for FreeBSD 5.3? I really want to use gcj, and with the speed of my Alpha (166MHz), it takes forever to compile the gcc suite. I am running 5.2.1 right now, and would upgrade to 5.3 if gcj is included. Also, a subquestion, how difficult would it be to do an upgrade from 5.2.1 -> 5.3? I noticed in the 5.2.1 installer (/stand/sysinstall) there was an option marked "upgrade".... does this work easily, or is that a tricky question to answer?? --Bryan From owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Mar 30 21:02:15 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AAF5216A4CE; I don't think the binary upgrades work well, but I haven't really tried to do one in a long time (if ever for that matter). gcj is not present in 5.3 and as far as I know there aren't any plans to include gcj in the base system. -- John Baldwin <>< http://www.FreeBSD.org/~jhb/ "Power Users Use the Power to Serve" = http://www.FreeBSD.org From owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Apr 2 17:49:58 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id CD9E516A4CE for ; Sat, 2 Apr 2005 17:49:58 +0000 (GMT) Received: from alpha.prismequine.com (ns1.prismequine.com [199.120.78.141]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BF59043D4C for ; Sat, 2 Apr 2005 17:49:57 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from kylea@prismequine.com) Received: from [192.168.1.129] ([192.168.1.1]) (authenticated bits=0) by alpha.prismequine.com (8.12.11/8.12.6) with ESMTP id j32GT9Kl068595 for ; Sat, 2 Apr 2005 10:29:09 -0600 (CST) (envelope-from kylea@prismequine.com) User-Agent: Microsoft-Entourage/11.1.0.040913 Date: Sat, 02 Apr 2005 11:49:54 -0600 From: "Kyle S. I converted this from an NT 4 server machine almost 3 years ago and it's been running fine under 4.x/5.x for a very long time. However, one issue I've continually had with this machine is that the hardware clock is off by almost 2 hours. Ntpd can't keep the correct time because the hardware clock is too far off. I've tried various things, but for the life of me can't remember how to get back to the correct console to reset the clock time. Can someone out there on the list help me get this fixed? I'd like to move to 5.3 for this system, but want the clock fixed first (it's driving me batty). Any asisstance is greatly appreciated. Thanx. -- Kyle Allender
