Yep. Although it's OK to forward the thread over to freebsd-doc and hope
someone does a quick fix, too. :-) It would help to mention which section of
the handbook is out-of-sync with the manpages....

Thanks, I forgot about the doc list.

The relevant handbook section is 14.12.1 (http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/fs-acl.html) and the offending text is the first sentence of the second to last paragraph and describes the -k flag of the setfacl command. It reads

"The -k flag will remove all of the currently defined ACLs from a file or file system."

which would indicate that -k can operate on regular files. According to the portion of the man page setfacl(1) regarding the -k flag

"An error will be reported if any of the specified files cannot have a default entry (i.e. non-directo-ries)."

which indicates that it doesn't work on ordinary files. I propose the following replacement text for the offending sentence. Feel free to come up with something better.

"The -k flag will remove all of the currently defined ACLs from a directory."

Hello again,=20
Thanks Joseph Koshy for teling me to send my email again, I have
changed my e-mail address becouse of I of that... Sorry for the first
one...

I have installed FreeBSD 5.2.1-RELEASE and now I what to upgrade it to
FreeBSD 5.4, I know that I have to <make buildworld> first , after
that <make buildkernel KERNCONF=3DYOUR_KERNEL_HERE> <make installkernel
KERNCONF=3DYOUR_KERNEL_HERE> and so on...
I do not understand <make sure you have good level 0 dumps>, <maybe
fix /etc/fstab> what should I do to get a good level 0 dumps?

MY problem is that I have a Pentium I at 100Mhz, I <make buildworld>
for 2 days now and it is still building. Wen I compilet on another
sistem and after that I use ftp to transfer it and after that:
#cd /
#chflags noschg kernel
#cp kernel kernel.old
#cp /var/ftp/incoming/kernel kernel
#chflags schg kernel
#shutdown -r now

If is OK and if it works please let me know, i have not tried.
NOW what happends with the modules, include, ports and all that, they
are compatible with the new version of kernel, do I have to change
some things or to upgrade everithing, it works if I compile the same
kernel, if I upgrade the kernel to 5.4 it will not working ?
If someone knows please let me know, or point me to a web page or
something, It is paintfull to build a kernel for 3 days.
If I made mistakes I apologize.

Simi,

sk> buildworld> first ,

If you are upgrading from 5.2.1 to 5.4, you'll need to
update userland, kernel and kernel modules together.

On your 'fast' machine, you could do a:

  make installworld DESTDIR=3D/new-root-dir

and move the entire contents of /new-root-dir over. You'll
need to be careful not to clobber your existing configuration,
so it would be best to extract /new-root-dir into a fresh
partition on the slow machine, then boot from this partition
at boot time and then patch things up.

I wouldn't recommend this procedure to a person new to FreeBSD.
It may be easier to use the 5.4 release CDs to upgrade the=20
'slow' machine. And don't forget to take backups! :)

Responsible-Changed-By: simon
Responsible-Changed-When: Sun Jun 12 16:47:57 GMT 2005
Responsible-Changed-Why:
Throw this back in the pool since I don't see me having time to rework

Hello

The doc packages have now been more or less broken for about a year
(yes I should have gotten around to looking at it, but...) and I have
yet to hear anyone mention this (other than ceri in the docs/71153).

So, is there really a point in keeping doc packages around? I don't
really think they are that interesting and they in account for a large
part of doc/ on the FTP mirrors.

Hi,

at
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/faq/commercial.html#COMMERCIAL-XSERVER
you write "Yes, Xi Graphics and Metro Link sell Accelerated-X product
for FreeBSD and other Intel based systems."

Unfortunately that is (resp. seems) wrong (now).

Xi Graphics writes "Lack of demand caused this OS to be dropped from
standard list. It is only available for Custom Projects." So the text in
the FAQ needs at least to get changed.

And metrolink.com doesn't look as it's a page from a company selling X
servers.

Bye,
Christian

>Description:
under the 'wepkey' section of the 'ifconfig(8)' man page, it states:

 wepkey key|index:key
For IEEE 802.11 wireless interfaces, set the selected WEP key.
If an index is not given, key 1 is set. A WEP key will be either
5 or 13 characters (40 or 104 bits) depending of the local net-
work and the capabilities of the adaptor. It may be specified either as a plain string or as a string of hexadecimal digits
proceeded by `0x'. For maximum portability, hex keys are recommended;..."

when a 40-bit hex key is proceeded by 0x then a given hex key will be:

aaaaaaaaaa0x

which is then treated by ifconfig as a 108-bit ascii key and not recognised by the router/wap
>How-To-Repeat:

Current FreeBSD problem reports

The following is a listing of current problems submitted by FreeBSD users.
These represent problem reports covering all versions including
experimental development code and obsolete releases.

Bugs can be in one of several states:

o - open
A problem report has been submitted, no sanity checking performed.

a - analyzed
The problem is understood and a solution is being sought.

f - feedback
Further work requires additional information from the
originator or the community - possibly confirmation of
the effectiveness of a proposed solution.

p - patched
A patch has been committed, but some issues (MFC and / or
confirmation from originator) are still open.

s - suspended
The problem is not being worked on, due to lack of information
or resources. This is a prime candidate
for somebody who is looking for a project to do.
If the problem cannot be solved at all,
it will be closed, rather than suspended.

c - closed
A problem report is closed when any changes have been integrated,
documented, and tested -- or when fixing the problem is abandoned.

>Description:
When IPC_NOWAIT is set and there is no message, msgrcv should
fail with errno set to ENOMSG. This behavior is implemented in our
system, and is defined in POSIX[1].

The current msgrcv(3) manpage says that EAGAIN would be set,
however.

>Description:
According to FreeBSD Handbook (14.8.2 Setting up a Heimdal KDC) one
should config DNS server by adding:
	-----
	_kerberos IN TXT EXAMPLE.ORG.
	-----

This doesn't work. DNS servers returns: text = "EXAMPLE.ORG.".
This is right, because RFC 1035 allows up to 16 character strings at
this field (assuming that noting should be prepended to the field if
it doesn't end with a point).

Thus I've got at KDC log:
	-----
2005-06-10T23:57:07 Server not found in database: krbtgt/EXAMPLE.ORG.@EXAMPLE.ORG: No such entry in the database
	----
	(lookat the point before '@').

Everythig is fine when changing DNS TXT record to "EXAMPLE.ORG"
(without a dot at the end).

BTW, NetBSD FAQ does not have such error:
	http://www.netbsd.org/Documentation/network/#kerberos

>How-To-Repeat:
Configure DNS as was shown earlier and try to receive kerberos ticket.
>Fix:
Remove the trailing dot at TXT record (english and other languages).

FreeBSD willow.basement.net 5.4-RELEASE-p1 FreeBSD 5.4-RELEASE-p1 #6: Sun May 15 15:53:29 CDT 2005 root@willow.basement.net:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/BASEMENT i386
>Description:
According to documentation, multiple filesystems can be specified on a single line in /etc/exports. However, when more than one filesystem is specified on a single line, mountd emits an error to syslog and does not export either filesystem. syslog message is; "bad exports list line" followed by the filesystems specified.

>How-To-Repeat:
In my case, /usr/ports and /usr/src are different filesystems. These filesystem are exported from machine willow to machines spike, harmony, and dawn.

In file willow:/etc/exports:
/usr/ports -maproot=0 spike, harmony, dawn
/usr/src -maproot=0 spike, harmony, dawn

Filesystems are exported correctly.

Edit willow:/etc/exports to contain:
/usr/ports /usr/src -maproot=0 spike, harmony, dawn

Signal mountd with:
# kill -s HUP `cat /var/run/mountd.pid

tail /var/log/messages to find
Jun 7 10:16:10 willow mountd[388]: bad exports list line /usr/ports /usr/src

>Fix:
exports(5 and Chapter 23.3 in FreeBSD Handbook should be updated to reflect current behavior of mountd(8), unless it would be easier/better to change mountd(8)'s behavior back to match documentation.

Hi,

I have just been working on a port that uses some patches on FreeBSD 5.4

I read the section "5.4.6 PATCHFILES" at:
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/porters-handbook/makefile-distfiles.html

In that section the comment is made:
"If the patch is not relative to the top of the source tree (i.e., WRKSRC)
because it contains some extra pathnames, set PATCH_DIST_STRIP accordingly.
For instance, if all the pathnames in the patch have an extra foozolix-1.0/
in front of the filenames, then set PATCH_DIST_STRIP=-p1."

However this would not work. Looking through /usr/ports/Mk/bsd.ports.mk it
would seem the appropriate variable is: PATCH_STRIP

This variable also seems to work appropriately.

Have I misunderstood the process or could there an error in the documentation.

Kind regards,

Geoff

>Description:
The ttys(5) man page states in respect of each line of /etc/ttys,

The first field is normally the name of the terminal special file as it
is found in /dev. However, it can be any arbitrary string when the asso-
ciated command is not related to a tty.

However, this is not true -- the new_session command in init.c will drop any /etc/ttys line whose first field does not give the name of a file in /dev which can be opened: (line 937 et seq)

        /*
         * Attempt to open the device, if we get "device not configured"
         * then don't add the device to the session list.
         */
        if ((fd = open(sp->se_device, O_RDONLY | O_NONBLOCK, 0)) < 0) {
                if (errno == ENXIO || errno == ENOENT) {
                        free_session(sp);
                        return (0);
                }
        } else
                close(fd);

The same error is present in ttys(5) in the 5.4-RC2 release in respect of the init source code on that release.
>How-To-Repeat:
Obey advice of man page to run a non-getty process from init; observe that it doesn't work.
>Fix:
Change the man page or the code in init.c. The latter looks harder since I don't think init.c knows whether a given line refers to a getty process or not.

Synopsis: [patch] update to handbook firewall PF section

Responsible-Changed-From-To: freebsd-doc->hmp
Responsible-Changed-By: hmp
Responsible-Changed-When: Thu Jun 16 03:26:01 GMT 2005
Responsible-Changed-Why:
I will work toward integrating the content of this article into
the handbook's PF section. Since that section already contains
some data about it, only selective parts will be adopted.

Joe, could you provide a link to a tarball that contains the
sources for the article?

Synopsis: Contrary to handbook, filesystem snapshots do not have the schg flag.

State-Changed-From-To: open->closed
State-Changed-By: hmp
State-Changed-When: Thu Jun 16 04:47:05 GMT 2005
State-Changed-Why:
The "schg" file flag is not set, but it is specially marked using the
"snapshot" file flag. It has similar qualities to the former.

I have updated the handbook to mention the correct file flag and how
to search for snapshot files on a file system.

Thanks!

I believe you shouldn't include hptmv driver release in the amd 64
version as it was not actually included, or at least in the version I
downloaded installed.
I could not kldload the device nor statically compile it in.=20
The FreeBSD 5.3 release of the driver for amd64 does work in 5.4 however.=

Hi Doc Team,

There seem to be two errors on following pages:

http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/contributors/staff-core.html
and
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/contributors/staff-who.html

Murray Stokely is no longer Head of the Release Engineering Team,
it's Scott Long.

Kind regards,
Lars.
