I'm unable set it up on both versions, but it worked great on 4.9. The host machine freezes when doing "power on" on FBSD 5.3 and I'm having AIO, sysctl kern.ipc.shm_allow_removed=1, NO SMP, NO ACPI. On 4.11 i'm getting complains about aio not existing, but it's surely compiled in. I just want a confirmation that it works for you and my configuration is somewhere broken. Thanks, Simon. I'm unable >set it up on both versions, but it worked great on 4.9. Well, I have two 5.3-RELEASE boxes running vmware3 acceptably stable, though with some "issues": Box 1 required that I built a kernel w/o 'device apic' - with apic in, my box didn't quite freeze, but my mouse became unusable and the cpu usage counters stopped running - giving vmstat output like: procs memory page disks faults cpu r b w avm fre flt re pi po fr sr ad4 cd0 in sy cs us sy id ... 2 1 0 444208 791176 1 0 0 0 2 0 28 0 244 937 548 0 0 0 Furthermore, when built from an up-to-date ports tree (i.e. using linux_base-8) as of three weeks ago, it would segfault immediately on startup if run by a normal user, while it worked fine for root. I backed down to the ports tree that came with 5.3-RELEASE, and built from that it now works perfectly fine. Box 2 had neither of those problems, i.e. vmware3 works with device apic in the kernel and built from an up-to-date (as of three weeks ago) ports three - however (only) on exit from vmware I get a complaint about aio: VMware Workstation Unrecoverable error: (VMX) AIO: NOT_IMPLEMENTED F(831):712 Please request support and include the contents of the log file: ... Since it doesn't seem to affect operations, I've just ignored it - I don't run vmware much on this box though, so it's possible that there are nasty problems lurking there, and I just haven't seen them... --Per Hedeland From owner-freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jan 31 18:20:27 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 74DBB16A4FF for ; Mon, 31 Jan 2005 18:20:27 +0000 (GMT) Received: from obsecurity.dyndns.org (CPE0050040655c8-CM00111ae02aac.cpe.net.cable.rogers.com [69.199.47.57]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8A6EA43D5F for ; Mon, 31 Jan 2005 18:20:24 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from kris@obsecurity.org) Received: by obsecurity.dyndns.org (Postfix, from userid 1000) id D73F9514F6; Mon, 31 Jan 2005 10:20:23 -0800 (PST) Date: Mon, 31 Jan 2005 10:20:23 -0800 From: Kris Kennaway To: freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.org Message-ID: <20050131182023.GE74573@xor.obsecurity.org> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha1; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="a+b56+3nqLzpiR9O" Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.2.1i Subject: [ports-i386@pointyhat.freebsd.org: linux-gtk2-2.2.1_2 failed on i386 4] X-BeenThere: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Development of Emulators of other operating systems List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 31 Jan 2005 18:20:27 -0000 --a+b56+3nqLzpiR9O Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable FYI; can you please investigate and/or report to the developers? This may mean that the package is incomplete or non-functional; at the very least, your port does not leave the filesystem in the same state it was before the port was installed. Can you please investigate? In the near future, this condition will be treated as an error on the package cluster, which means that the package will not be made available on the ftp site. Bochs is able to shut down fine, but clearly loader is not happy. This happens during the "spinny" bit of the loader: BTX loader 1.00 BTX version is 1.01 Console: internal video/keyboard BIOS drive A: is disk0 BIOS drive B: is disk1 BIOS drive C: is disk2 BIOS 639kB/130048kB available memory FreeBSD/i386 bootstrap loader, Revision 1.1 (rwatson@paprika, Thu Jan 27 12:32:46 GMT 2005) - - If I attempt to break out to boot2 and directly load the kernel, bochs will exit with the following error once it finishes loading the kernel: 00000000000i[ ] installing x module as the Bochs GUI 00000000000i[ ] using log file bochsout.txt ======================================================================== Bochs is exiting with the following message: [CPU ] prefetch: running in bogus memory ======================================================================== If I pull down the 4.7 FreeBSD image from the Bochs web site, that appears to load fine. If I drop the loader binary from 4.7 onto the image I'm using for 6.x, the loader runs fine, but of course can't read files from the UFS2 partition. I'm guessing either this may be a loader bug, or possibly a nasty Bochs BIOS/loader interaction. Is anyone else successfully running 5.x or 6.x under Bochs, and if so, have you see something like the above? Did you find a way around it?
