On a related issue: There was a commit which removed USE_LINUX=yes from a lot of ports (>100) to be able to use alternative linux_base ports. This results in the possibility to use e.g. linux_base-rh-9, but it also discards dependency information. I like to backout this commit and solve the feature request by checking for a OVERRIDE_DEFAULT_LINUX_BASE knob in the USE_LINUX case in bsd.port.mk. Do I get the approval for this too? So far the dependency list is broken since some ports don't register their dependency on the default (or an alternative) linux_base (for a list of affected ports have a look at http://www.leidinger.net/FreeBSD/USE_LINUX2.txt). So the question is: do we want to ship 5.4-release with a broken dependency information? If not we need to backout the commit in question. When we backout Trevor's commit, the users of an alternative linux_base may get an inconsistent pkgdb (there's no linux_base port to register dependencies to). This can be fixed by the patch to bsd.port.mk. I know the actual verification process involves a full run on the cluster. But when you look at the patch you will notice that it only will be considered to affect anything, when USE_LINUX in a port is used (lang/icc still contains the USE_LINUX, so you can use it to test the patch). And it only affects the USE_LINUX case, if OVERRIDE_DEFAULT_LINUX_BASE is defined, so for the default case (of not having OVERRIDE_DEFAULT_LINUX_BASE defined, like on the ports build cluster) it does nothing. Yes, this isn't a formal prove, but as long as our make isn't broken, it's more than a run on the cluster is able to verify. To verify the remaining case (defining OVERRIDE_DEFAULT_LINUX_BASE to a valid and an invalid value) you just need to cd to lang/icc and run: make -V USE_LINUX -V RUN_DEPENDS make -V USE_LINUX -V RUN_DEPENDS OVERRIDE_DEFAULT_LINUX_BASE=foobar make -V USE_LINUX -V RUN_DEPENDS OVERRIDE_DEFAULT_LINUX_BASE=rh-9 (it also works to define it in make.conf). I want to work on this regardless of the decision of portmgr, so if you decide to keep the actual broken dependency list for the release, I will come back to you after the freeze. If you approve the backout but not the bsd.port.mk change, I will show up after the freeze with the bsd.port.mk patch. Regardless of everything above: what about the plist problems Kris' pointed out on emulation@? Do you want to see patches or do I have implicit approval to fix those plist issues? I've just noticed that some of those plist errors are the cause of the removal of the dependency to linux_base-8, so we have to first talk about the USE_LINUX part, and then wait for new build logs. Ah, words as spoken by the very young, who have not yet seen 25 years' worth of things that Cannot Possibly Break, continuously and forever blowing up left and right :-) Yes to patches and yes to testing on the cluster, please. OTOH since this is so invasive we may need to let it remain broken for 5.4 except for the default linux_base. mcl From owner-freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Mar 27 22:34:40 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9488D16A4CE; Sun, 27 Mar 2005 22:34:40 +0000 (GMT) Received: from mail.freebsd-corp-net-guide.com (mail.freebsd-corp-net-guide.com [65.75.192.90]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 326C443D3F; Sun, 27 Mar 2005 22:34:40 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from tedm@toybox.placo.com) Received: from tedwin2k (nat-rtr.freebsd-corp-net-guide.com [65.75.197.130]) j2RMYmb61348; Sun, 27 Mar 2005 14:34:49 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from tedm@toybox.placo.com) From: "Ted Mittelstaedt" To: "bsdzz" , Date: Sun, 27 Mar 2005 14:34:36 -0800 Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Priority: 3 (Normal) X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook IMO, Build 9.0.6604 (9.0.2911.0) X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2800.1478 In-Reply-To: <424668C5.5040806@verizon.net> Importance: Normal cc: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org Subject: RE: Does QEMU support Windows VPN ? Marvellous! Now to linux... I haven't tried any of the linux compatibility stuff yet, either for running binaries or cross-compiling. I thought I would ask here first because I have seen quite a few messages suggesting potential issues on amd64. At the moment I am mainly interested in cross-compiling and wanting to target 32-bit linux, but obviously 64-bit will be useful in the future. Would like to get some advice on what to install and any kernel configuration or module loading that I might need to do. On a related topic - I can see that there are ports for converting binaries between different formats (e.g. ELF to a.out). As there is already a runtime compatibility established, how easy would it be to build something that reads in a FreeBSD binary or library and outputs a linux one? Just a thought. That would be near impossible. The elf2aout program in ports has a specific purpose: to convert static elf binaries to a.out format so simple bootloaders can execute them. The binary format is the least of your worries when trying to run under a different OS. You've got structure changes (FILE for example), constant changes (ioctls, signals, errnos), syscall number changes (even the method to invoke syscalls is different), possibly different reserved registers, etc. -- Dan Nelson dnelson@allantgroup.com From owner-freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Mar 29 23:04:17 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 832E816A4CE; Tue, 29 Mar 2005 23:04:17 +0000 (GMT) Received: from blues.jpj.net (blues.jpj.net [208.210.80.156]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D6F1143D45; Tue, 29 Mar 2005 23:04:16 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from trevor@jpj.net) Received: from blues.jpj.net (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by blues.jpj.net (8.12.9p2/8.12.9) with ESMTP id j2TN4EBr030123; Tue, 29 Mar 2005 18:04:14 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from trevor@jpj.net) Received: from localhost (trevor@localhost)j2TN45v8030108; Tue, 29 Mar 2005 18:04:05 -0500 (EST) X-Authentication-Warning: blues.jpj.net: trevor owned process doing -bs Date: Tue, 29 Mar 2005 18:04:05 -0500 (EST) From: Trevor Johnson To: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org Message-ID: <20050329070127.X30796@blues.jpj.net> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII X-Scanned-By: MIMEDefang 2.51 on 208.210.80.156 cc: netchild@freebsd.org cc: portmgr@freebsd.org Subject: Re: [patch] upgrading x11-toolkits/linux-gtk2 fails X-BeenThere: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Development of Emulators of other operating systems List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 29 Mar 2005 23:04:17 -0000 Alexander Leidinger wrote: > Yes, linux_base-rh-9 isn't done yet. You have to talk to > trevor@FreeBSD.org about it. When I added it, the linux_base-rh-9 port was working properly with the linux-XFree86-libs port (I tested it). The way I had arranged things, the linux_base ports did not run the Linux ldconfig, but the linux-XFree86-libs port did, adding the path to the X11 libraries to the search path. Other ports which added Linux libraries would just run ldconfig without changing the search path. However, netchild recently changed the installation phase of linux-XFree86-libs port, it no longer adds the X11 path. Rather, he later changed ports/emulators/linux_base-8/Makefile (rev. 1.99) so that it would do that. The need for the changes to linux-XFree86-libs has not been explained to me by netchild, nor by portmgr who approved them. In fact, the timing of the linux_base-8 change suggests that the change to linux-XFree86-libs was inadvertent. The direction I had been going in with these ports was to move the X11 packages out of the linux_base ports, to cleanly support Linux emulation for users who do not want X11 and to make it easier to update the Linux X11 and base ports when bugs are found in one or the other. The impression I had was that netchild was in agreement with this. If so, it would be best to restore the previous behaviour of the linux-XFree86-libs port. If not, I think it would be better if he explained what his goal is here, and the reasons for it, rather than just declaring that the linux_base ports which remain in my care are now unfinished. -- Trevor Johnson From owner-freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Mar 30 04:22:42 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6DEAE16A4CF; Wed, 30 Mar 2005 04:22:42 +0000 (GMT) Received: from sophia3.e-shell.net (sophia3.e-shell.net [64.246.46.12]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1C1EF43D53; Wed, 30 Mar 2005 04:22:42 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from loox@e-shell.net) Received: from dsl-200-95-2-41.prod-infinitum.com.mx (dsl-200-95-2-41.prod-infinitum.com.mx [200.95.2.41]) by sophia3.e-shell.net (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6929A656836; Tue, 29 Mar 2005 22:22:41 -0600 (CST) From: Axel Gonzalez To: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org Date: Tue, 29 Mar 2005 22:22:39 -0600 User-Agent: KMail/1.8 References: In-Reply-To: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline Message-Id: <200503292222.39751.loox@e-shell.net> cc: Michael Hopkins cc: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Cross-compiling/porting to Linux X-BeenThere: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Development of Emulators of other operating systems List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 30 Mar 2005 04:22:42 -0000 On Tuesday 29 March 2005 05:32, Michael Hopkins wrote: > Hi all > > I have just installed mingwin32 from the ports and it works beautifully - > can now port all my Unix command line code (including linking to win32 > libraries) to win32 with the flick of a make switch. This should be well documented elsewhere, if i remember correctly: on kernel, add the options: options LINPROCFS options COMPAT_43 options COMPAT_LINUX32 Install the emulators/linux_base-8 port and enable on rc.conf linux_enable="YES" After that you should have a running linux enviroment $ /compat/linux/bin/bash $ uname -a Linux moonlight 2.4.2 FreeBSD 5.3-STABLE #0: Thu Feb 3 23:08:02 CST 2005 amd64 amd64 amd64 GNU/Linux Then, the real thing, the cross compile NOTE: At this point I'm guessing, tell us if it works ;) Get a GCC RPM and install it (check the Makefile on the linux port, to see the flags it uses, and see you dont overwrite system GCC) Maybe some extra RPMs.. make, libtool etc Run gcc from the linux bash (check the path to be sure its really using linux's gcc) *IF* this work, you should be able to compile and run linux32 programs (you using a linux compiler right ?) This resulted in: - a complaint at deinstall time about a modified file (let's call something like this a "cosmetic issue" which we try to fix in every port in $PORTSDIR as long as it is possible, and since the linux_base-8 port uses a plist which is generated at install time we still have such a "cosmetic issue" with the cache file). - a problem after a portupgrade. Previously you had to reinstall the linux-X11 libs too or you had to add the path to the dynamic linker config by hand (a major issue for some users, several asked for help either on the lists or in a private mail). After my change the path to the X11 libs is there in every case, even when no linux X11 libs are installed, but this doesn't hurts, it's just a search path with no libs to find there. This doesn't add a dependency to the X11 bits. Regarding the "inadvertent": we have two orthogonal issues which touch the same implementation. I wasn't aware of both issues at the same time, and sometimes you need to fix something more than once to get every case right. Feel free to ask further questions on emulation@, I will try to answer every question. Would you be please so kind to comment the recent plist issues with some linux ports? Kris forwarded some error logs to emulation@. At least some of those problems are related to the issue I describe in http://www.Leidinger.net/FreeBSD/USE_LINUX2.txt (I've already finished the bsd.port.mk part, but portmgr wants to do a complete build run on the cluster after 5.4-Release for this change). Wanting to keep it simple and well-managed i.e. as close to ports idea as possible. Gentoo (with portage) was ideal but is apparently broken: Starting Terminal in /usr/ports/emulators/linux_base-gentoo-stage1... bash-2.05b# make ===> linux_base-gentoo-stage1-2004.3 is marked as broken: Incorrect pkg-plist. My question is - is it safe to use apt-get, dpkg and dselect with the debian port? What I mean is, does it _automatically_ know to install things in the right place (e.g. /compat/linux/usr/bin *NOT* /usr/bin)? A related question is; will those package management programs know to look for their various databases with /compat/linux/ acting as the root directory? TIA Michael _/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/ _/ _/ _/_/_/ Hopkins Research Ltd _/ _/ _/ _/ _/_/_/_/ _/_/_/ http://www.hopkins-research.com/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ 'touch the future' _/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/ From owner-freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Mar 30 18:34:43 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9EC0616A4CE; Wed, 30 Mar 2005 18:34:43 +0000 (GMT) Received: from post.00t.org (feynman.00t.org [217.160.135.158]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 48DA643D46; Wed, 30 Mar 2005 18:34:42 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from ulrik@00t.org) Received: from [172.24.0.14] (pD9E1F83D.dip.t-dialin.net [217.225.248.61]) (using TLSv1 with cipher DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by post.00t.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9D35E192BD; Wed, 30 Mar 2005 20:34:39 +0200 (CEST) Message-ID: <424AF144.2060503@00t.org> Date: Wed, 30 Mar 2005 20:34:44 +0200 From: Ulrik Guenther User-Agent: Mozilla Thunderbird 1.0 (X11/20050309) X-Accept-Language: en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Michael Hopkins References: In-Reply-To: X-Enigmail-Version: 0.89.6.0 X-Enigmail-Supports: pgp-inline, pgp-mime Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit cc: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org cc: Axel Gonzalez cc: "freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org" Subject: Re: Cross-compiling/porting to Linux X-BeenThere: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Development of Emulators of other operating systems List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 30 Mar 2005 18:34:43 -0000 -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Heya! For me the redhat packages did not work as I wanted them to work. Maybe you should give the following tutorial a try: http://people.freebsd.org/~tjr/linux32.html There it is explained how to get the Linux32 emulation running with Slackware 10 as base (10.1 might work as well). With Slackware you will not have to mess around with creepy tools like RPM. And of course, on the Slackware mirrors you will also find pre-packaged versions of the GCC. By the way, if you still want to use RPMs, try to use the switches - --ignoreos, --ignorearch and --nodeps, these ones worked for me when installing OOo 2.0 beta. Hope I helped :) Have a nice day, Ulrik Guenther Michael Hopkins wrote: | On 30/3/05 5:22 am, "Axel Gonzalez" wrote: | | |>On Tuesday 29 March 2005 05:32, Michael Hopkins wrote: |> |>>Hi all |>> |>>I have just installed mingwin32 from the ports and it works beautifully - |>>can now port all my Unix command line code (including linking to win32 |>>libraries) to win32 with the flick of a make switch. I have established that the Redhat 8, SUSE 9.2 and Debian Woody ports install OK. I've been told that Slackware 10 can also be installed manually (see my other post for more details on all of the above). The next step is to get a working set of gcc tools. Unfortunately, the linux_devtools port is broken and so is the gentoo port which I believe would bootstrap itself and then install everything (including gcc tools, I assume) from source. Gentoo was also my preference because portage would seem to be the most port-like way of system maintenance. With the above working Linux environments I seem to have the following options for installing the gcc toolset. 1) binary RPMs 2) tarballs 3) apt-get/dpkg/dselect Although the first two are a bit of a fiddle to carry out that is not a real problem. I have done (1) for the SUSE port, but when I use gcc I get this: cc: installation problem, cannot exec `cc1': No such file or directory make: *** [LD_search.o] Error 1 Checking cc -v gives: Using built-in specs. Configured with: ../configure --enable-threads=posix --prefix=/usr --with-local-prefix=/usr/local --infodir=/usr/share/info --mandir=/usr/share/man --enable-languages=c,c++,f77,objc,java,ada --disable-checking --libdir=/usr/lib --enable-libgcj --with-gxx-include-dir=/usr/include/g++ --with-slibdir=/lib --with-system-zlib --enable-shared --enable-__cxa_atexit i586-suse-linux Thread model: posix gcc version 3.3.4 (pre 3.3.5 20040809) So I guess it is looking in all the wrong places for it's libraries. I have tried to alleviate that in the makefile C flags with: CC = /compat/linux/usr/bin/cc -B/usr/compat/linux/usr -B/usr/compat/linux/usr/local -B/usr/compat/linux/lib -B/usr/compat/linux/usr/lib -I/usr/compat/linux/usr/include/g++ But it doesn't change anything. I haven't tried (2) because I couldn't successfully install slackware yet. I'm not clear whether the problem of hard-coded directories mentioned above would be alleviated or not. Maybe someone has already produced a tarball or RPM which contains the gcc tools set up correctly for /compat/linux/? I like (3) - which is probably the default method in Debian - because it is automatic and would handle dependencies, but I am worried that the automatic tools could install stuff all over my / directory rather than inside /compat/linux/ where I want it all to stay. Also not sure whether they would/should store their databases inside /compat/linux or on /. Any thoughts or tips that lead to a safe and effective solution for this much appreciated and a great help to the software development community on FreeBSD who want to target Linux. If I can get it working and learn enough about port makefiles then I could try to automate it and make it available. What you want to do is install the linux_base-8 port. It is the standard default linux emulation port. Ensure your ability to run 32-bit Linux binaries is OK. As Scott > already mentioned they are lacking the amd64 entry in ONLY_FOR_ARCHES. > > Bye, > Alexander. Hi Alexander In experimental mood I edited linux_devtools-8 last night and called it linux_devtools-8-amd64. Just added amd64 in ONLY_FOR_ARCHES and hard-coded i386 into the necessary search paths. Along with linux_base-8 this worked! :o) My first go at a port Makefile and first linux cross-compile on FreeBSD in one go - and all at 4am. Code ran just as it should in Linux mode. Now it goes downhill - I decided I had been playing about a lot as root with a tired brain, so I cvsup'd ports and 5_3 and made world & kernel. Everything still working fine. Then I deinstalled linux_base-8 and linux_devtools-8-amd64, planning to reinstall them and submit the patch. For some reason that I REALLY cannot understand, this won't happen because rpm no longer understands the --dbpath argument! root@Athlon /usr/ports/emulators/linux_base-8 % make install ===> Installing for linux_base-8-8.0_6 --dbpath: unknown option *** Error code 1 This also happens at the command line. root@Athlon /usr/ports/emulators/linux_base-8 % rpm --initdb root@Athlon /usr/ports/emulators/linux_base-8 % rpm --initdb --dbpath /var/lib/rpm --dbpath: unknown option Why the heck would this be? I have no idea and I'm feeling pretty tee'd off that I had it working after many night hours of playing with different ports now can't get it again. Any ideas? Maybe this is my first chance to contribute. Any tips for me (apart from 'read the handbook'). As Scott already mentioned they are lacking the amd64 entry in ONLY_FOR_ARCHES. Infrastructure ports (e.g. libs) are supposed to install in LINUXBASE. Leaf ports (mozilla, enemyterritory) are supposed to install in LOCAL- or X11BASE like every other port. We don't mention the first one explicitely in the porters handbook, the second one is "mentioned" implicitely (by not mentioning it the default install policy applies). Telling those facts explicitely is a good idea. I already have a lot on my TODO list, but if someone sends in a patch I will commit it (if nobody else beats me). There's a way to do it without the need for a new port. > rpm no longer understands the --dbpath argument! That's strange. In this case try it the Microsoft way: de-/reinstall the rpm port. Maybe you should delete the /var/db/rpm directory after deinstalling the rpm port to make sure you're in a sane situation... this assumes you don't have any other rpm based software installed anymore. Since you've experimented alot I suggest to remove the /compat/linux directory completely before you install the linux_base again.
