I'm afraid the problem can be an incompatibility between FreeBSD's and Linu= x's=20 firewire implementation. In csr.c source file from Linux kernel, I can see= =20 this: case CSR_STATE_CLEAR: /* FIXME FIXME FIXME */ printk("doh, someone wants to mess with state clear\n"); out; case CSR_STATE_SET: printk("doh, someone wants to mess with state set\n"); out; and the "someone wants to mess with state set" is one messages I receive on= =20 the Linux side. I strongly suggest using glabel to mark the drive so that it will always show up in the same place. If you are planning on sharing the drive with windows you'll need to keep in mind two things -- windows XP won't format a partition > 32gb and the msdosfs driver can't handle FAT filesystems over 128gb (I think) without using an experimental "hack". I have a 300gb external drive set up with a 32gb fat32 partition for "sharing" with XP and the rest as ufs2. Unfortunately the sbp driver doesn't work quite right with it and it never attaches the slices, but it works fine with usb2 and umass. > > > what am I missing? > > Thank you for your help > > system info shows below... > >> dmesg > Copyright (c) 1992-2005 The FreeBSD Project. > Copyright (c) 1979, 1980, 1983, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994 > The Regents of the University of California.
