You didn't read the FreeBSD handbook, which should be the first place to turn to when you need help. Read the section on configuring X at http://www.freebsd.org/doc/handbook/x-config.html 3) Ignore the guy who said that you need to start GNOME from gdm or xdm. That's quite incorrect. 4) Go to http://www.freebsd.org/gnome and click on "Installation Instructions." It's the second link from the top. I've run into problems due to exactly this while trying to build a native amd64 big integer library for freenet (in Contrib/NativeBigInteger from freenet's CVS repo). The build succeeds, but crashes at runtime at exactly the point where the compiler warns about an incompatible pointer type. -- Conrad J. Interestingly, I am able to print from Mozilla. Both give the same option for the printing device, namely, PostScript/default; Epiphany gives the error message "There was a problem printing. The printer could not be found." All other applications, Gnome and otherwise, can print fine, and show a larger selection of output devices (presumably from gnomeprint or an application-specific driver). What might I do about this? Details: FreeBSD 6.0-beta (updated from a 5.4 install); Epiphany, Mozilla and Gnome binaries installed from the 5.4 RELEASE distribution (CD #2); lpr and apsfilter; LaserJet 4M Plus (has Postscript). It is not a major bug for most people, but for those who wish too add custom smileys it 'can' be. There are two ways around this. in ~/.yahoorc/gyach/emoticons you add a line like this: :!m finger.png and you place finger.png in /usr/X11R6/share/gyach/smileys The smiley will not appear in chat, the first work around is too rename finger.png too a two digit/letter name like 65.png or j1.png etc etc But there is another fix for this that the author of gyach emailed me. If you want to edit the source to fix this, you can edit util.c and look for this: void convert_smileys( char *str ) { char tmp[4097]; char sm_code[10]; Change sm_code[10]; to be sm_code[211]; That should allow filename lengths that are allowed in other places. void convert_smileys( char *str ) { char tmp[4097]; char sm_code[211]; Just in case you want too change the source code too correct this 'bug' Cheers, Jayton Garnett From owner-freebsd-gnome@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Aug 8 03:41:23 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-gnome@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-gnome@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7A22D16A41F for ; Mon, 8 Aug 2005 03:41:23 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from kchapdelaine@comcast.net) Received: from rwcrmhc12.comcast.net (rwcrmhc13.comcast.net [216.148.227.118]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 414DE43D45 for ; Mon, 8 Aug 2005 03:41:23 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from kchapdelaine@comcast.net) Received: from 204.127.197.114 ([204.127.197.114]) by comcast.net (rwcrmhc13) with SMTP id <2005080803412101500hshoee>; Mon, 8 Aug 2005 03:41:22 +0000 Received: from [24.17.133.156] by 204.127.197.114; Mon, 08 Aug 2005 03:41:20 +0000 From: kchapdelaine@comcast.net To: freebsd-gnome@freebsd.org Date: Mon, 08 Aug 2005 03:41:20 +0000 Message-Id: <080820050341.29419.42F6D45F000C39C7000072EB22007503300A02070E040A0B9F0E080C05@comcast.net> X-Mailer: AT&T Message Center Version 1 (Dec 17 2004) X-Authenticated-Sender: a2NoYXBkZWxhaW5lQGNvbWNhc3QubmV0 Subject: Was: Startup message in GNOME, now PRINTING X-BeenThere: freebsd-gnome@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: GNOME for FreeBSD -- porting and maintaining List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 08 Aug 2005 03:41:23 -0000 Yes, after a couple of reboots, it decided to start behaving... I'm trying to test my new firefox out (no automated self-tests appear available) and, it seems, downloading extensions for it (through Tools->Extensions->Get New Extensions) is the most "stressful". Some of them work, but, for example Forecastfox (which is currently among the most popular according to the Mozilla site) will reliably hang firefox for me. Starting with a non-existant ~/.mozilla the browser downloads the extension fine and installs it. Then it needs to be restarted. On restart it hangs (consuming consuming most of the CPU) after saying "Downloading extension data source". The linux-firefox has no obvious problems starting after that and the extension works fine in it. Things work fine on FreeBSD/i386 too. Is this something, the new patches I'm working on could've introduced, or does this extension cause problems on amd64 with the current firefox port too? Thanks! -mi From owner-freebsd-gnome@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Aug 8 18:03:21 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-gnome@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-gnome@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id EFA6016A41F for ; Mon, 8 Aug 2005 18:03:21 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from knowtree@aloha.com) Received: from relay.pixi.com (relay.pixi.com [206.127.224.101]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9B45743D46 for ; Mon, 8 Aug 2005 18:03:21 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from knowtree@aloha.com) Received: from carter.pixi.com (carter.pixi.com [206.127.224.102]) by relay.pixi.com (8.13.4/8.13.4) with ESMTP id j78I3KlR027416 for ; Mon, 8 Aug 2005 08:03:20 -1000 (HST) Received: from Internal (206.127.224.41) by carter.pixi.com with SMTP; Mon, 08 Aug 2005 18:03:19 GMT X-Titankey-e_id: <85303575-62f8-4d10-b740-3dd5c37435a3> Received: from yoda.pixi.com (yoda.pixi.com [206.127.224.41]) by yoda.pixi.com (8.11.6/8.11.6) with SMTP id j78Hs1q01556 for ; Mon, 8 Aug 2005 07:54:01 -1000 Message-Id: <200508081754.j78Hs1q01556@yoda.pixi.com> To: freebsd-gnome@freebsd.org From: knowtree@aloha.com Date: Mon, 8 Aug 2005 07:54:01 HST X-Posting-IP: 141.190.32.69 X-Mailer: Endymion MailMan Standard Edition v3.2.19 Subject: Re: Epiphany: No Printing X-BeenThere: freebsd-gnome@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: GNOME for FreeBSD -- porting and maintaining List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 08 Aug 2005 18:03:22 -0000 > From: Joe Marcus Clarke > Subject: Re: Epiphany: No Printing > To: jahnke@fmjassoc.com > Cc: freebsd-gnome@freebsd.org > > Open up gconf-editor, and change or > add /apps/epiphany/dialogs/print_printer_name to "PostScript/default". Wow! I've been annoyed by this for months. Thanks, Joe (and Frank, for asking)!! BTW, I had to add the key, and I already had a key named print_printer, set to lpr. I held off asking because I thought the problem was with CUPS, which I still have not gotten my arms around after years of using the good old BSD print system. In case it isn't obvious, the gconf-editor can be found on the Applications menu as System Tools / Configuration Editor. The attachment contains an upgrade to lang/spidermonkey. The benefits are: . build on amd64 at all and _properly_ on all other platforms (-fPIC -DPIC should be used for shared objects everywhere); . do not build vendor's own version of libm (fdlibm) -- FreeBSD's -lm provides sufficient functionality (mozilla, firefox contain the same foolishness, BTW); . uses -lreadline instead of building vendor's own "editline"; . unless WITHOUT_TESTS is set, download, patch and run the vendor's set of self-tests; . patch to compile cleanly with '-Wall -Werror'. Mozilla people indicate, that they plan to make a new release of spidermonkey, when Firefox-1.5 ships (circa September): https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=303857 When that takes place, spidermonkey can be used _instead_ of browsers' own snapshots of js thus reducing the porting effort, cutting build-times, and providing a single place for patches. Considering that, on one hand, the port is marked broken on amd64 since March 2004 (a tier-1 platform), and, on the other, nothing depends on it (no new possible new breakage), I ask portmgr to also allow me to merge these fixes before release -- unless the maintainer objects in a few days. Thanks! I'm doing a build of the current CVS on FreeBSD 5.4/amd64 at the moment. It hasn't gotten to the plugin build yet, but I'll be interested to see (a) if there are warnings about pointer widths and (b) if it works :). Until then, its worth noting that the Linux amd64 release from Sun (1.5.0_04) still has jint defined as int. It appears that Solaris in 64 bit mode also still has jint defined as an int. This raises some questions in terms of compatibility for us to change it to be something other than an int. -- Greg Lewis Email : glewis@eyesbeyond.com Eyes Beyond Web : http://www.eyesbeyond.com Information Technology FreeBSD : glewis@FreeBSD.org From owner-freebsd-gnome@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Aug 9 05:39:22 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: gnome@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-gnome@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3C16216A41F; Tue, 9 Aug 2005 05:39:22 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from marcus@marcuscom.com) Received: from creme-brulee.marcuscom.com (creme-brulee.marcuscom.com [24.172.16.118]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A0EAF43D46; Tue, 9 Aug 2005 05:39:21 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from marcus@marcuscom.com) Received: from shumai.marcuscom.com (shumai.marcuscom.com [192.168.1.4]) by creme-brulee.marcuscom.com (8.13.3/8.13.3) with ESMTP id j795e9Ge098086; Tue, 9 Aug 2005 01:40:09 -0400 (EDT) (envelope-from marcus@marcuscom.com) From: Joe Marcus Clarke To: Mikhail Teterin In-Reply-To: <200508081518.38403.mi+mx@aldan.algebra.com> References: <200508081518.38403.mi+mx@aldan.algebra.com> Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha1; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="=-S64nRL9rkY/XBRGkClW1" Organization: MarcusCom, Inc. I'm, actually, thinking, the jint should be left alone and just the GetJavaWrapper() and its friends be changed to accept intptr_t (or some j-prefixed equivalent) instead of jint. You will not get warnings (in Java) because actual callers of GetJavaWrapper come (I think) from the LiveConnect part of the browsers, which are compiled separately. The HEAD of the spidermonkey (js) tree currently, sort of, expects GetJavaWrapper to take a jlong, when a regular long is 8 bytes (their own strange way of _not_ using intptr_t). But this means, the real GetJavaWrapper and the UnwrapJavaWrapper() need to accept a (pointer to a) truly intptr_t-wide value. Per cscope: Global definition: UnwrapJavaWrapper File Line 0 CNSAdapter_JavaPluginFactory.cpp 389 NS_IMETHODIMP CNSAdapter_JavaPluginFactory::UnwrapJavaWrapper(JNIEnv* jenv, jobject jobj, jint* obj) 1 CFactory_IJVMPlugin.cpp 42 NS_IMETHODIMP CFactory::UnwrapJavaWrapper(JNIEnv* jenv, 2 JSObject.cpp 223 JDresult UnwrapJavaWrapper(RemoteJNIEnv* env, jobject jobj, jint* obj) 3 JavaPluginFactory5.cpp 476 JavaPluginFactory5::UnwrapJavaWrapper(JNIEnv* jenv, jobject jobj, jint* obj) { and: Global definition: GetJavaWrapper File Line 0 CNSAdapter_JavaPluginFactory.cpp 367 NS_IMETHODIMP CNSAdapter_JavaPluginFactory::GetJavaWrapper(JNIEnv* jenv, jint obj, jobject *jobj) 1 CFactory_IJVMPlugin.cpp 19 NS_IMETHODIMP CFactory::GetJavaWrapper(JNIEnv* jenv, jint obj, jobject *jobj) { 2 JavaPluginFactory5.cpp 447 JavaPluginFactory5::GetJavaWrapper(JNIEnv* proxy_env, All of those "jint obj" need to change together with whatever functions these guys themselves call. For you to test it from inside a browser, you'll have to patch Firefox' js/src/liveconnect... It may be easier to just build (and test) the lang/spidermonkey -- I asked portmgr to allow me to unbreak it on amd64. > Until then, its worth noting that the Linux amd64 release from Sun > (1.5.0_04) still has jint defined as int. Following up my own e-mail... As it turns out, the plugin and javaws build is specifically disabled on non-32 bit architectures at the moment. Probably mostly to do with the issues we've talked about. I played around a bit and got it to build, but there are numerous warnings about casting between pointers and integers of different sizes. Not surprisingly the resultant plugin blows up when you try and use it. I think this is going to take a bit of work to get sorted out. -- Greg Lewis Email : glewis@eyesbeyond.com Eyes Beyond Web : http://www.eyesbeyond.com Information Technology FreeBSD : glewis@FreeBSD.org From owner-freebsd-gnome@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Aug 10 05:04:39 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-gnome@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-gnome@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 013AD16A422; Wed, 10 Aug 2005 05:04:37 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from rmgzmzfsxy@dmc-racing.com) Received: from mail-gateway.gearhost.com (12-217-45-156.client.mchsi.com [12.217.45.156]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 97D8545EB8; Wed, 10 Aug 2005 04:34:58 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from rmgzmzfsxy@dmc-racing.com) Date: Tue, 09 Aug 2005 20:48:29 -0800 Message-id: Delivered-To: "Nestor Herring" To: From: "Alice Perez" Subject: St0ck 0pportunities X-BeenThere: freebsd-gnome@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: GNOME for FreeBSD -- porting and maintaining List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 10 Aug 2005 05:04:40 -0000 NEXT GENERATION BROADBAND SOLUTION !!BREAKING NEWS!! ---------------------------------------- SUMMARY : -Nayna (NAYN.OB) created an innovative & integrated broadband so|ution -Revolutionizing "The First Mile" broadband access networks in the process -De|ivering broadband access solutions to he|p drive a major paradigm shift ---------------------------------------- Symbo|: NAYN.OB Recent price: $0.30 - $2.50 volume: 7,170 shares(4/16/05): 35.8mm (est) Equity market capita|ization: $34mm ---------------------------------------- WORLDWIDE BROADBAND : -Worldwide number of broadband subscribers including Cable, DSL and Fiber to the premise about 128 mil|ion in Q3, 2004 and expected to grow to 287 million by 2009 -Emerging Markets such as India expecting broadband subscribers growth from 3 mi|lion to 20 mil|ion subscribers by 2007 -Fastest Growth Market is Asia Pacific; Expected Equipment Growth from $24.5 bil|ion to $58.8 bil|ion by 2008 ---------------------------------------- MARKET GROWTH DRIVERS : -Increasing broadband demand for residential app|ications such as streaming music, peer-to-peer sharing app|ications, online games, video-on-demand, HDTV, etc.! -Increasing demand for VoIP services in the enterprises -Accelerated computing systems evolution including future growth in multi-processor cores, c|usters, distributed data storage schemes and adaptive agents ---------------------------------------- PARADIGM SHIFT TO ETHERNET OVER FIRST MILE (EFM) NETWORKS: 1."First Mile" Gigabit Ethernet And Ethernet Passive Optical Networks (EPON) -Fiber to the premise (business, mu|ti-unit dwe|ling, home premise), a gigantic point-to-mu|tipoint broadband fire hose -Designed to increase service provider revenue by delivering high-margin broadband data, voice and video (HDTV, Digital TV, CATV) services -Paradigm shift driving cost reduction with one network by rep|acing three separate voice, data and video networks -Wide app|icabi|ity for te|ecom carriers, municipalities, enterprises, large sca|e, mu|ti-unit dwe|ling builders, systems integrators 2. The most significant difference is avoiding to extract/compile Mozilla's own implementation of libm (descendant of the same stuff we have in /usr/src/lib/msun). I'm also fixing a handful of warnings, but firefox still hangs on occasion and, in light of my earlier e-mail (viz. Deer Park) it, probably, makes little sense to pursue it. My update is at http://aldan.algebra.com:8015/~mi/firefox.update.bz2 It will create a handful of new files/patch-warnings* patches. I'm not sure, if these are truly helpful, however (other new patches, probably, are). Firefox may hang on startup (or shortly after) with or without them. It _seems_, the misbehavior is less frequent, when I use these extra warning-patches (I have both version installed in parallel), but it may just be my perception. Take a look, please, and see if these changes make sense to you... It may be worth it to re-arrange the hunks and/or rename the patch-files. -mi P.S. I do not think, I have Jeremy's nspr vs. firefox-nspr change in there -- it would need to be merged in too. The "old" firefox-1.x is not expected to run on amd64. Lucky you, if it does. The code for the branch was forked a long time ago (circa April 2004, AFAIK) and only "security fixes" get merged into it. Do not bother submitting patches -- you will be yelled at unceremoniously for wasting developers' time with patches against an obsolete version and accused of other misdemeanors. The upcoming version of the browser -- "Deer Park", a.k.a. 1.5 -- currently in alpha2, is supposed to come off the trunk of their cvs tree, which already contains a lot of bug-fixes, including 64bit-specific ones, but these will NOT be merged into the firefox-1.x branch. Those fixes aren't great -- "long", for example, is used in lieu of "intptr_t" (MSVC is not C99-compliant, so screw you), but they just happen to work for now. I think, we need to concentrate on porting this new Deer Park version (www/deerpark ?) in preferance of the current (www/firefox). Although alpha, it, apparently, has a better chance of working right on our "unusual" set of platforms. The 1.5 release is expected in September. Those wanting a stabler browser right now ought to use linux-firefox, opera, or konqueror. Comments? -mi P.S. I have a seemingly working firefox right now on FreeBSD/amd64. I even have some extensions loaded. But installing the Forecastfox extension hoses it reliably, which does not happen with the 32-bit versions (neither linux-firefox on amd64, nor native on i386). Also, it might be a good idea to provide an overview of all packages installed on your system (e.g. = an `ls /var/db/pkg`). *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/graphics/inkscape. --=20 yg2@york.ac.uk www.neverness.= org GnuPG key fingerprint: C63B 1905 79C7 34F2 C2F2 AB79 4B12 7F5C E02F 5909 Team for Economic Evaluation and Health Technology Assessment=20 --C7zPtVaVf+AK4Oqc Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Disposition: inline -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.2 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQFC+zDJSxJ/XOAvWQkRAqvsAJ9TuQ2n04nhdmi1UC8Sj2gEUS7vIQCffPuM tyr65/SCy2A6seoCBknVV8I= =qzB5 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --C7zPtVaVf+AK4Oqc-- From owner-freebsd-gnome@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Aug 11 12:30:30 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: gnome@FreeBSD.org Delivered-To: freebsd-gnome@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D318416A41F for ; Thu, 11 Aug 2005 12:30:30 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from lauri.jarvenpaa@gmail.com) Received: from zproxy.gmail.com (zproxy.gmail.com [64.233.162.205]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id EF2F843D45 for ; Thu, 11 Aug 2005 12:30:29 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from lauri.jarvenpaa@gmail.com) Received: by zproxy.gmail.com with SMTP id 12so246215nzp for ; Thu, 11 Aug 2005 05:30:28 -0700 (PDT) DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; q=dns; c=nofws; s=beta; d=gmail.com; h=received:message-id:date:from:to:subject:mime-version:content-type:content-transfer-encoding:content-disposition; b=PQpYr/6AvJiVHL814KoSwRQye53fQw2GXMxUHbCKgfAJ2UEeehqyI5hDemFu1bWP0II3bXiS1zTZaViTbrKFWexSRXJhoaVZYVMd9aaUKdt+eqvX6E/jrABbm4t+tbPTakSDBD47xqz0SODRkIXwTdJok9i9W3NDNSXr6AvXaJk= Received: by 10.36.10.3 with SMTP id 3mr1426491nzj; Thu, 11 Aug 2005 05:30:28 -0700 (PDT) Received: by 10.36.153.19 with HTTP; Thu, 11 Aug 2005 05:30:28 -0700 (PDT) Message-ID: <4c13bcc605081105302e2e8812@mail.gmail.com> Date: Thu, 11 Aug 2005 15:30:28 +0300 From: =?ISO-8859-1?Q?Lauri_J=E4rvenp=E4=E4?= To: gnome@FreeBSD.org Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Content-Disposition: inline Cc: Subject: port inkscape - build fails on 4.11 X-BeenThere: freebsd-gnome@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: GNOME for FreeBSD -- porting and maintaining List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 11 Aug 2005 12:30:31 -0000 Hello.
