I have a situation here. My Asus P4C800 Deluxe has a Promise 20378 controller onboard (which according to ata(4) is supported) but every time I boot up when it is enabled I get these messages: ata4-master: FAILURE - ATA_IDENTIFY timed out ata4-master: FAILURE - ATA_IDENTIFY timed out ata4-slave: FAILURE - ATA_IDENTIFY timed out ata4-slave: FAILURE - ATA_IDENTIFY timed out ata4-slave: FAILURE - SETFEATURES SET TRANSFERMODE timed out Followed by a panic (fatal trap 12: page fault while in kernel mode) and then the machine reboots. On this Promise controller I have two drives on one cable on the P-ATA (PRI_RAID) IDE interface. Both S-ATA devices are not in use. During POST, the drives are both correctly identified and enumerated. One strange thing though is that in the BIOS, after Primary IDE Master (a 40G WD HDD), Primary IDE Slave (a 40G WD HDD), Secondary IDE Master (a CD drive), and Secondary IDE Master (not in use) there are two more entries: Third IDE Master and Fourth IDE Master. Both are empty (though it seems like my drives should show up as master & slave under one of them.). The drives do show up in the BIOS under Boot > Hard Drives so I know that they're detected. So maybe them missing in Third and Fourth IDE Masters is not even relevant info here. If I disable the Promise controller then everything boots fine. I also have ACPI disabled in the kernel (it wouldn't get past the ninth or tenth line in the boot up output when it's on). I saw in freebsd-current that there was talk of an ATA regression where some of these ATA_IDENTIFY messages were being seen but they didn't seem to contain the SETFEATURES time out so maybe it's unrelated. Anyhow, I'd love to get this controller working so that I can get back to my work files. If you know of existing patches please point them out (and I'll have to find instructions on how to apply them but c'est la vie). Thanks in advance, chicken From owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Jan 23 08:16:32 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5692F16A4CE for ; Sun, 23 Jan 2005 08:16:32 +0000 (GMT) Received: from ns.yar.post.ru (ns.yar.post.ru [213.187.102.74]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4DAB843D2D for ; Sun, 23 Jan 2005 08:16:31 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from liettneff@bk.ru) Received: from gate-corbina.km.vibrators.ru (km.yar.post.ru [213.187.105.186]) by ns.yar.post.ru (8.12.9p2/8.12.9) with ESMTP id j0N8GTql069078 for ; Sun, 23 Jan 2005 11:16:30 +0300 (MSK) (envelope-from liettneff@bk.ru) Received: from [192.168.1.100] (reaper [192.168.1.100] (may be forged)) j0N8GMGm096609 for ; Sun, 23 Jan 2005 11:16:23 +0300 (MSK) (envelope-from liettneff@bk.ru) Date: Sun, 23 Jan 2005 11:16:28 +0300 From: Michael Lednev X-Mailer: The Bat! The bad news is that programming details do not appear to be available from Philips and there's no official FreeBSD support. AFAIK, the chips are nothing like the Brooktree chips. The good news is that there an unofficial driver at http://download.purpe.com/ that works (for me) on 5.3. I sent a message about it to this list on Saturday but = have received no acknowledgements yet. Maybe if the two of us are having = the same problem we'll have better luck. Here's the text of my message (so we can consolidate to one thread): ------------------------------------- 8< = ------------------------------------- Hi everybody, This is my first post here but I've been using FreeBSD for several years = (though always learning just enough to accomplish what I want to do). I have a situation here. My Asus P4C800 Deluxe has a Promise 20378 = controller onboard (which according to ata(4) is supported) but every = time I boot up when it is enabled I get these messages: ata4-master: FAILURE - ATA_IDENTIFY timed out ata4-master: FAILURE - ATA_IDENTIFY timed out ata4-slave: FAILURE - ATA_IDENTIFY timed out ata4-slave: FAILURE - ATA_IDENTIFY timed out ata4-slave: FAILURE - SETFEATURES SET TRANSFERMODE timed out Followed by a panic (fatal trap 12: page fault while in kernel mode) and = then the machine reboots. On this Promise controller I have two drives on one cable on the P-ATA (PRI_RAID) IDE interface. Both S-ATA devices are not in use. During = POST, the drives are both correctly identified and enumerated.=20 One strange thing though is that in the BIOS, after Primary IDE Master = (a 40G WD HDD), Primary IDE Slave (a 40G WD HDD), Secondary IDE Master = (a CD drive), and Secondary IDE Master (not in use) there are two more = entries: Third IDE Master and Fourth IDE Master. Both are empty (though it seems = like my drives should show up as master & slave under one of them.). The = drives do show up in the BIOS under Boot > Hard Drives so I know that = they're detected. So maybe them missing in Third and Fourth IDE Masters = is not even relevant info here. If I disable the Promise controller then everything boots fine. I also = have ACPI disabled in the kernel (it wouldn't get past the ninth or = tenth line in the boot up output when it's on). I saw in freebsd-current that there was talk of an ATA regression where = some of these ATA_IDENTIFY messages were being seen but they didn't seem = to contain the SETFEATURES time out so maybe it's unrelated. Anyhow, I'd love to get this controller working so that I can get back = to my work files. If you know of existing patches please point them out = (and I'll have to find instructions on how to apply them but c'est la = vie). I have the controller set to IDE in the BIOS so it should act just as any other IDE controller (according to the manual and many other sources). I have two hard drives on the primary IDE (not on the controller) and a CD drive on the secondary IDE (also not on the controller). Then I have two more hard drives on the PRI_RAID channel (which *is* the P-ATA channel on the controller). Those two drives are getting the failure (or at least one is - see the error messages in my original text). I wish I had an S-ATA drive to test with so that I could verify that it's a problem with the P-ATA part of this controller. Did you try leaving the Promise controller (in IDE mode) enabled and disconnecting the drives? What about setting the controller into raid mode with or without the drives attached? Obviously don't do anything that would cause any data loss on those drives (i.e. init the raid array). Sounds like something to do with Promise in the IDE mode. Perhaps the kernel is detecting the chip and assuming raid is enabled. You could also try disabling the ar driver in the kernel for grins, then perhaps the chip will just show up as an IDE controller. I'm suspect the SATA raid functions work fine, but I believe the controller also supports a non raid mode for SATA drives, unfortunately I don't have a spare to test this. In any event report back what you find so the driver can be fixed if it seems to be the problem. Be sure to copy your dmesg output when modifying the controller mode and driver as this may indicate how the chip presents itself to the kernel and provide hints if a patch is needed. Has anyone gotten any further with this? If not, I'll tell you what I've managed to do so far: Thanks to that post made to a Linux list which I referred to some weeks ago, and to the NetBSD uyap driver, I was able to get somewhere. First, from the posted message, I took the firmware includes file and hacked it to match the format of the ezload.c utility used by NetBSD's uyap. (No guarantee I got that right.) Then I modified NetBSD's uyap.c and called it uadaptec.c, to port it to FreeBSD 4.x and change a few things to match with the mailing list posting. I also ported ezload.c for FBSD 4.x. The list posting indicated that a special sequence needed to be sent after firmware load, or something. I tried adding that to ezload or uadaptec.c, but it wasn't quite successful. I suspect I need to send those as part of a umass.c quirk. Anyway, in my latest tests, building uadaptec.c as a module, I'm able to download the firmware, whereupon the device detaches from the bus, and then gets snagged again by ugen.ko, as it's not as pure a umass device as the code expects. When I add an entry to umass to grab the device (its product ID changes from 0x2002 before firmware load, to 0x2003 after), then it attaches to umass, and creates luns up to pass7, all of which have oddball zero-size geometry. The following two times I tried this, I got panics (divide by zero), so maybe I was lucky the first time, or else what I'm seeing is a result of not sending those missing commands. After the firmware load, here's what the device shows with `usbctl': DEVICE addr 3 DEVICE descriptor: bLength=18 bDescriptorType=device(1) bcdUSB=2.00 bDeviceClass=0 bDeviceSubClass=0 bDeviceProtocol=0 bMaxPacketSize=64 idVendor=0x03f3 idProduct=0x2003 bcdDevice=100 iManufacturer=1(Adaptec, Inc.) iProduct=2(Adaptec USB2-Xchange Adapter) iSerialNumber=3(020000008348) bNumConfigurations=1 CONFIGURATION descriptor 0: bLength=9 bDescriptorType=config(2) wTotalLength=32 bNumInterface=1 bConfigurationValue=1 iConfiguration=4(USB2.0 to SCSI) bmAttributes=80 bMaxPower=500 mA INTERFACE descriptor 0: bLength=9 bDescriptorType=interface(4) bInterfaceNumber=0 bAlternateSetting=0 bNumEndpoints=2 bInterfaceClass=255 bInterfaceSubClass=0 bInterfaceProtocol=255 iInterface=5(USB Mass Storage, Bulk Only) ENDPOINT descriptor: bLength=7 bDescriptorType=endpoint(5) bEndpointAddress=2-out bmAttributes=bulk wMaxPacketSize=64 bInterval=0 ENDPOINT descriptor: bLength=7 bDescriptorType=endpoint(5) bEndpointAddress=6-in bmAttributes=bulk wMaxPacketSize=64 bInterval=0 current configuration 1 ---------- This is quite different from its power-up state, which hasn't been posted yet. I don't have any devices to attach to this adapter to see if that makes a difference. According to the Linux list post, the device is a well-behaved umass device after firmware load. Seeing that I have no idea what I'm doing, it's possible that I've botched the firmware include file. Or I could have maybe botched the ezload.c or uadaptec.c file, getting an address wrong or something. Or it could be that I need to add those missing resets to umass.c -- or that I wasn't doing them right in uadaptec.c. Or plenty of other things I could have screwed up. I've done all this for my hacked FreeBSD 4.x USB stack, but it should be pretty trivial to get this working with 5.x and -current for anyone who wants to give it a try. My umass.c is snarfed from an older -current, to get functioning multi-card-readers, which may be related to the problems with the luns of the adapter. The files I hacked upon can be found at https://NOSPAM.dyndns.dk/hacks/adaptec/ and you should be able to build from these just like most other modules. At the moment I'm missing a umass.c hack, and I'll put that up after sleeping on it or something. Without this hack, you probably won't panic your machine the way I did, but after uadaptec.ko grabs the adapter and stuffs it with code, it should then appear with the different product ID and different appearance with `usbctl' and such. If you snag it with umass.ko, the LED on the adapter will come on as well. These aren't the files I built, but after trying to clean them up (my hacks are easy to find searching XXX and/or HACK), so I may have broken them, but I'll sleep on it first before needing to think clearly. Feel free to take my work, erm, hacks, and do as you see fit with them, or make them work properly, or if you know more than I do, fix ezload.c to be a general-purpose loader handling both this adapter as well as the uyap for which it was written, and anything else that may need to use EZ-USB. So close, but yet so far... thanks barry bouwsma From owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Jan 28 22:28:25 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6A54016A4CE for ; Fri, 28 Jan 2005 22:28:25 +0000 (GMT) Received: from marvin.muc.de (marvin.muc.de [193.149.48.2]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 5F4B143D3F for ; Fri, 28 Jan 2005 22:28:24 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from 520017510473-0001@t-online.de) Received: (qmail 34521 invoked by alias); 28 Jan 2005 22:28:23 -0000 Delivered-To: mods-muc-lists-freebsd-hardware@moderators.muc.de Received: (qmail 34514 invoked from network); 28 Jan 2005 22:28:22 -0000 Received: from mailout09.sul.t-online.com (194.25.134.84) by marvin.muc.de with SMTP; 28 Jan 2005 22:28:22 -0000 Received: from imh00.t-online.com by mailout09.sul.t-online.com with esmtp id 1CuebG-0006IG-00; Fri, 28 Jan 2005 23:28:22 +0100 Received: from news.t-online.com by imh00.t-online.com with esmtp id 1CuebG-0003Pe-00; Fri, 28 Jan 2005 23:28:22 +0100 Received: from news by news.t-online.com with local id 1CuebG-0004S1-00; Fri, 28 Jan 2005 23:28:22 +0100 To: muc-lists-freebsd-hardware@moderators.muc.de Path: news.t-online.com!not-for-mail From: Felix Blank Newsgroups: muc.lists.freebsd.hardware Date: Fri, 28 Jan 2005 23:28:21 +0100 Organization: T-Online Lines: 26 Message-ID: References: <6BBE5C5603D0D611A06F0002A5D655640611399D@nyschx22psge.sch.ge.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7Bit X-Trace: news.t-online.com 1106951301 01 17112 NEH6rB2v79wDkbf 050128 22:28:21 X-Complaints-To: usenet-abuse@t-online.de X-ID: TbkLoOZrgeqnMbmI2iIpsOtEyzFQvKMp+fKGWxPxzXMST7MTtoSG6l User-Agent: KNode/0.7.2 X-Mailman-Approved-At: Sat, 29 Jan 2005 12:51:54 +0000 Subject: Re: magneto-optical drives X-BeenThere: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: General discussion of FreeBSD hardware List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 28 Jan 2005 22:28:25 -0000 Sherman, Michael \(GE Energy\ wrote: >> Hi all. >> >> I am not sure whether it is the right thread for my kind of question. The reason for this behaviour is, that the sector size is 512 Bytes up to this size. Larger MOs use 2048 Bytes / sector. On any attempt to use "disklabel" the kernel complains badly about wrong sizes. The only solution i found is to generate a ISO filesystem and mount this - read only of course ;-) Regards, Felix -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Felix Blank Munich Germany E-mail: felix@tasha.homeip.net From owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Jan 29 22:37:20 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 40B2E16A4CE for ; Sat, 29 Jan 2005 22:37:20 +0000 (GMT) Received: from f12.mail.ru (f12.mail.ru [194.67.57.42]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id ECE8643D55 for ; Sat, 29 Jan 2005 22:37:19 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from samspeed@mail.ru) Received: from mail by f12.mail.ru with local id 1Cv1DT-000NBd-00 for freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org; Sun, 30 Jan 2005 01:37:19 +0300 Received: from [195.98.95.75] by win.mail.ru with HTTP; Sun, 30 Jan 2005 01:37:19 +0300 From: =?koi8-r?Q?=E1=CE=C4=D2=C5=CA=20=F3=CD=C1=C7=C9=CE=20?= To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Mime-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: mPOP Web-Mail 2.19 X-Originating-IP: [195.98.95.75] Date: Sun, 30 Jan 2005 01:37:19 +0300 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=koi8-r Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Message-Id: Subject: WiFi adapters support X-BeenThere: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list Reply-To: =?koi8-r?Q?=E1=CE=C4=D2=C5=CA=20=F3=CD=C1=C7=C9=CE?= List-Id: General discussion of FreeBSD hardware List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 29 Jan 2005 22:37:20 -0000 Hi ALL !
