I have a box running 5.3-RELEASE and have a Linksys WMP11 prism2.5 card. A couple of weeks ago, I had noticed lots of wi0: device timeout errors in my dmesg, and decided to finally do something about it. So, I ended up sticking the card in a windows machine and upgrading the firmware to the following: wi0: Intersil Firmware: Primary (1.1.0), Station (1.4.2) This fixed the device timeout errors (which caused the entire card to lock up until a reboot), but then I started seeing lots of the following in my dmesg: wi0: timeout in wi_seek to 13d/0 =2E..repeat 15 times... wi0: timeout in wi_seek to 13d/0 wi0: timeout in wi_cmd 0x010b; event status 0xa000 wi0: xmit failed wi0: timeout in wi_seek to 128/0 =2E..repeat 3 times... wi0: record read mismatch, rid=3Dfd4f, got=3Dfd43 wi0: record read mismatch, rid=3Dfd43, got=3Dfd4f =2E..repeat 10 times I notice I only have problems when I start using high-traffic applications such as P2P apps. Now, I cannot even do a wicontrol(8) to check signal strength; all I get is "SIOCGWAVELAN: Input/output error", but the card otherwise works fine. I've googled all over for what causes these problems and what can be done to possibly rectify them. I'm also looking for a way to fix the wicontrol problem without a reboot every time. Comment out the atrun entry in /etc/crontab, and mount all your file systems noatime (change "rw" to "rw,noatime" in /etc/fstab). You may also want to change the newsyslog entry in /etc/crontab to only run once a day instead of every hour. I don't know for sure whether the unit is any good, but I would like to rule out operator error before I throw it away. Here's what happens: at boot time, the tape drive is detected as device ast0: /kernel: ast0: TAPE at ata1-slave PIO4 When I insert a brand-new 4/8GB tape and run 'mt -f /dev/ast0 status' as root I get the following output: Mode Density Blocksize bpi Compression Current: 0x01:X3.22-1983 512 bytes 800 none ---------available modes--------- 0: default variable 0 none 1: default variable 0 none 2: default variable 0 none 3: default variable 0 none --------------------------------- File Number: 0 Record Number: 0 Residual Count 0 but I get the following message in /var/log/messages: /kernel: ast0: TEST_UNIT_READY - HARDWARE ERROR asc=0xf0 ascq=0x36 error=0x00 Similarly, if I run 'mt -f /dev/ast0 rewind', I get no output to the terminal but the following in the logs: /kernel: ast0: TEST_UNIT_READY - HARDWARE ERROR asc=0xf0 ascq=0x36 error=0x00 /kernel: ast0: REZERO - HARDWARE ERROR asc=0xf0 ascq=0x36 error=0x00 After either of these commands, if I run 'mt -f /dev/ast0 errstat' the terminal displays: mt: /dev/ast0: Inappropriate ioctl for device So, does this suggest the drive is fried, or am I doing something wrong? Google search shows that 'inappropriate' message popping up occasionally for all manner of devices on both Linux and BSD, but usually the hits are in the form of mailing list posts with few, if any, responses, and nothing that seems relevant to my situation. Any ideas? Configuration: RAID 1, n.2 disks Samsung 160Gb serial ata. Normally I could use: sysctl hptmv.status to see all about the array status, and raid in use. To simulate a fault I've swapped out a disk, then I've reinstalled the disk and I've tryed to rebuild the array: sysctl -w htpmv.status="hpt 0 rebuild 1,x" where x=disk reinstalled, and not in array. Nothing, it seems in pending ... communication lost (ssh out, console without answer, etc etc); I've waited for about 4 hours, but the raid1 can't rebuild finish. The last resort is a forced hardware reboot, and rebuild the array with controller's bios. There's someone that uses this controller and could help me?
