From: Matteo Riondato To: bug-followup@freebsd.org Cc: hraghav Subject: Re: i386/74593 Installer installs the wrong version of linux_base Date: Sun, 3 Apr 2005 22:24:51 +0200 --kPvmKZRaHW6UEX9w Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable The origin of the problem is the index_search function in src/usr.sbin/sysinstall/index.c, called from config.c:526 . The search is done in a sorted INDEX so linux_base-6* comes before linux_base-7* (which is the "real" linux_base).=20 Obviously this bug appears only when there are more than one package with the same basename. Please note that in 5.3-RELEASE, only 2 packages of those included depended on linux_base-6. I'm going to try to fix this. I'm having similar troubles with ATAPICAM under 5.4-PRERELEASE CVSupped at the end of April (after small cosmetical changes came into RELENG_5). My CD-RW drive is AOpen CRW5232, it uses UDMA33 by default. The most interesting thing is that drive passes ATAPICAM initialization normally: 1) when it is connected to motherboard's ICH4 ATA controller; or 2) when I set hw.ata.atapi_dma=0 from the loader. It hanges only when it is connected to Promise Ultra 100 TX2 controller and uses UDMA mode during the boot. So I can set hw.ata.atapi_dma=0 in order to boot system and later set UDMA33 back using atacontrol - my drive then works correctly even on the Promise. Below are references in case some advanced in kernel programming person wants to fix this annoying bug: kernel configuration: ftp://external.atlantis.dp.ua/FreeBSD/PR/78929/lynx boot messages with hw.ata.atapi_dma set to 0: ftp://external.atlantis.dp.ua/FreeBSD/PR/78929/dmesg.boot some screenshots for the verbose boot with hw.ata.atapi_dma=1 and CD-RW attached to Promise controller: ftp://external.atlantis.dp.ua/FreeBSD/PR/78929/1.jpg ftp://external.atlantis.dp.ua/FreeBSD/PR/78929/2.jpg ftp://external.atlantis.dp.ua/FreeBSD/PR/78929/3.jpg ftp://external.atlantis.dp.ua/FreeBSD/PR/78929/4.jpg System doesn't proceed after 4.jpg. I just don't understand why it passes initialization at ICH4 - timing problems? I've got another piece of information to add. I've repeated experiments with the NEC DVD RW ND-3520A drive. Results are very close to AOpen CRW5232, except that solid system hang doesn't take forever - system boot continues in several minutes, giving the possibility to capture all relevant information. Again, on ICH4 ATAPICAM initializes normally: ftp://external.atlantis.dp.ua/FreeBSD/PR/78929/dmesg.NEC.ICH4 while on Promise Ultra 100 TX2 it will take several minutes to get to /sbin/init, and then ATAPICAM will retry attachment every minute (and doesn't succeed - /dev/cd0 doesn't appear while /dev/acd0 does): ftp://external.atlantis.dp.ua/FreeBSD/PR/78929/dmesg.NEC.Promise My conclusion: there is some (timing?) problem in ATAPICAM initialization code path, which luckily doesn't manifest itself on ICH4 (or if drive is in PIO mode), but manifests on Promise Ultra with ATAPI drive in UDMA mode. Since I do not make a habbit of stopping and starting my NTP daemon on a regular basis I am unsure when it was exactly fixed. Also note the only changes to the server that exhibited the bug were software related so hardware could not have been a factor. FreeBSD is a great Operating System. Keep up the excellent work. My 30GB Toshiba 2.5" disk was fine until I upgraded and then I started getting "ad0: TIMEOUT - READ_DMA retrying" messages. I assumed it was a bad disk so I replaced it with a new Seagate 40GB. A week later and I'm getting the same errors. This could be related to bug i386/78517. I'm guessing that the timeout value might be a bit too fascist or else it's something more serious. The system was re-installed from the official 5.3 release CDs. The previous disk errors were reported after using a make buildworld (etc) from 5.2.1 to 5.3 I could be wrong, but it seems strange to be seeing disk errors on two separate drives when the machine has been running FreeBSD without problems for two years. I've set the severity to 'serious' because I suspect that the failed disk writes really failed and weren't retried, even though I doubt there's actually a disk error. I tested it with 5.4-rc1 in hopes it was fixed but it is not. Whenever I boot a FreeBSD version after 5.2, the kernel start up on the CD-ROM installer and on the installed OS (if I go ahead with the install) fails with acd0 errors that READ_BIG timed out. This is an eMachines M2350, with SLIM COMBO drive. The exact same machine works fine on 5.2, so I'm not sure what happened. If I boot into safe mode it works fine, but the CD-ROM drive is very slow -- things install at less than 100 kb/s as opposed to the 700 or 800 kb/s if not running in safe mode. >How-To-Repeat: Merely attempt to install or use FreeBSD 5.3 or 5.4-rc1. >Fix: Run in Safe Mode (though this is really undesirable). >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Apr 9 20:50:29 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-i386@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B72EF16A4CE for ; Sat, 9 Apr 2005 20:50:29 +0000 (GMT) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 78AC243D1D for ; Sat, 9 Apr 2005 20:50:29 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.3/8.13.3) with ESMTP id j39KoTTk000784 for ; Sat, 9 Apr 2005 20:50:29 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.3/8.13.1/Submit) id j39KoTDl000783; Sat, 9 Apr 2005 20:50:29 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Date: Sat, 9 Apr 2005 20:50:29 GMT Message-Id: <200504092050.j39KoTDl000783@freefall.freebsd.org> To: freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.org From: "Dorr H. We respond with a detailed procedure explaining how to achieve the desired functionality of triple booting NetBSD, FreeBSD, and Linux on the same hard drive. In this experiment, we intend to triple boot three OSes as listed. For the purposes of illustration, we will use the example of a 20GB hard drive, allocated with 5G for NetBSD, 5G for FreeBSD, and the remaining 10G for linux. We perform the following steps: 1) We would first achieve dual boot with NetBSD and FreeBSD by installing from CDROM, first NetBSD, accepting the boot manager option. At time of creating partitions for NetBSD create slice for FreeBSD and also reserve 10GB of free space to be used for Linux later on. slice 2 h freeBSD 5G 2) After NetBSD is installed, install FreeBSD in the second slice, accepting the boot manager option for FreeBSD. During these menu interactions, designate the 10GB free space as a slice with filesystem ID 131 (this is for Linux). After completing this step, reboot, and while booting the system should offer the following options at the first stage boot loader: F1 BSD F2 FreeBSD 3) Now we install linux in the reserved third slice. During the Linux install, we accept the grub or lilo loader. After this install is complete, we configure the grub or lilo loader and make it aware of the first two operating systems. Once this step is complete, upon reboot we will see the following menu options: BSD FreeBSD Linux So this will allow you to triple boot the three operating systems. Nainesh Nayudu, engineer Dorr H.
