Hello Dean,

could it be that your D610 is using the BIOS version A04? With this BIOS
version i had the same problem, you described. I needed a downgrade to BIOS
A03 to get FBSD running.
Today i tested the newest version A05 and it works, so give this BIOS a try,
and i hope it will help.

Regards

Jerome-P. Klodzinski

Ah NO WAY!! Yes we update the BIOS before we image the
laptops. WOW that never came to mind. I will
certainly give it a whirl tomorrow at work.

Thank you very much,
Dean Patterson.

P.S - Do you know the differences in the BIOS updates?

I can take a look at the log-file of the BIOS updates! ;) I just noticed
that the version A04 is no longer available on the dell-support side. The
relevant info of the BIOS A05 is following:

1. Fixed enhancement added in the A04 BIOS that added support for INT 13
DMA transfers (under DOS) when operating in protected mode. Problem
with previous BIOS revision prevented accessing the systems hard-disk
drive in DOS when running in a protected mode environment.

AS an attachment i send the whole log.

Regards

Jerome-P. Klodzinski

your assistance and I am now BSD'ing again. I want to
also thank everyone else who tried to help me on this
issue.

Dean.

>Environment:
I don't get a outputfile cause the system hangs..
the following hardware i'd used:

-CPU: AMD Athlon 2500+
-Mainboard: ASUS A7N8X-Deleuxe Rev.: 2.0 BIOS-version: 1008
-RAM: Kingston HyperX 2x512MB (runs on Daul-Channel-Mode!)
-HDD: Western Digital WD1200JD (SATA)
      ----- "" ----- WD600BB (IDE)
-Graphic: ATI Radeon 9500nPro
.and some optical drives, isdn-card and a floppy
the following software i use:

-bootloader grub on ide-hdd
-suse linux 9.3 on ide-hdd
-windows xp pro on sata-hdd
>Description:
When i insert the installation disk FBSD 5.4 CD1 in my optical drive and boot from them starts FBSD and ask me, what i want. I select with ACPI and the computer loads the things from the cd. Now, the system hangs on at the line, where stands that it detectet my sata-hdd (or mount it (i don't know, cause i'm not a pro in BSD)). OK, so far. I tryed without my sata-hdd, then the system hangs on at my cd-writer (ASUS-model). I tryed with PC-BSD 0.7 - i had the same bug. When the system hangs up i can't do anything. only rebooting over the Reset button.

sorry, my english is not the best but i hope u can help us. thx
>How-To-Repeat:
Use the hardware i discribe and insert the FBSD 5.4 bootdisk and boot the machine!

>Description:
I am installing from the 5.4 CD ISO, disk 1. The machine is the i386 class, the ASUSRock K7S41GX with a fresh Seagate Barracuda disk, 300 GB. I have tried using the whole disk and automatic partitions. The installation first complains that the disk geometry is wrong (it finds the geometry with no help from me), but proceeds with creating the FreeBSD partitions. It accepts the other configuration data, and finally fails when it tries to write the FreeBSD partitions:

Unable to find device node for /dev/ad0s1b in /dev!

When viewed from Linux the geometry is the same, and the OS has no
trouble writing partitions. FreeBSD can then see the partitions on boot, but gets the same error as when the disk was fresh out of the box.

>Description:
FreeBSD system restarts if the keyboard is not connected. It happens right after presenting "Welcome to FreeBSD" screen after waiting for running default. If the keyboard is connected, everything is fine.
My FreeBSD is installed on a computer with Intel 486DX100 processor with 20 MB RAM, 815MB hard disk. There are also three PCI netcards. Graphic card is Trident 512 KB.
>How-To-Repeat:
Just run the FreeBSD without keyboard plugged.
