I need to expand my network and is thinking of installing DSL for say www traffic. The problems is that in South Africa DSL has limits. On a standard DSL link you only have 3gig for a month (that is international traffic) and when that 3gig is used then they switch you over to a much slower international link. Now what I want to do is install the line and buy 4 or 5 accounts which in return give me 3gig per account. Do you know of a way to setup FreeBSD to check the amount of data through that link and then switch over to the next account when the cap is reached. I hope this makes sense Thank you Spidey From owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Jan 4 11:52:51 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8027C16A4CE for ; Tue, 4 Jan 2005 11:52:51 +0000 (GMT) Received: from rena.mysmt.net (rena.mysmt.net [82.150.137.102]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 82DCD43D5E for ; Tue, 4 Jan 2005 11:52:50 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from erik@microcontroller.nl) Received: (qmail 41881 invoked by uid 1003); 4 Jan 2005 11:52:46 -0000 Received: from erik@microcontroller.nl by rena.mysmt.net by uid 89 with qmail-scanner-1.21 (clamdscan: 0.70-rc. spamassassin: 2.63. But then you want to count the bandwidth, have a look at netstat this wil give you the bytes out: (where fxp0 is your nic) netstat -b -I fxp0 | head -2 | tail -1 | awk '{ print $10; }' this wil give you bytes in; netstat -b -I fxp0 | head -2 | tail -1 | awk '{ print $7; } you have to build some scripts around that to do the counting.. -Erik. I am wondering if it is possible to build my own NAS using passive backplane pci boards, and freebsd, instead of purchasing a vender appliance. I have asked on efnet, and pretty-much they just laughed at me, and began with the juvenile remarks. Is it truely that out rageous? I am aware of Cisco producing such equipement, however, I could have sworn that they are just running a variation of BSD themselves. Any input would be much appreciated. -- Love you sweetness. As stated, below, I am trying to find information on possible ways to build a dialup access server with multi-modem cards, and possibly a passive backplane setup, running FreeBSD. How many modems? I believe this should be doable, but I'm not familiar with the 'passive backplane setup' you are talking about. Nothing special, just a more industrial/specialized way of using multiple Interface cards, on a machine that does not need any other overhead. I am trying to build something for a production ISP environment, so I guess scalability is a necessity.
