I am attempting to run a privately owned, publically accessible web server from a PC running FreeBSD 4.8. I configured ppp.conf and rc.conf for the *old* ISP settings (the ones that worked a year ago), and now they do now work. I cannot connect the machine to the ISP. Although PPP does enable, I cannot resolve any domains. The ISP is Bell-Sympatico (Canada), and they are completely unwilling to help me, or provide software that will accommodate *nix systems specifically. They do, however, have PPPoE software for Linux. Since I am new to FreeBSD, I do not want to try this software unless I know it will work ok. The software is available here http://service.sympatico.ca/index.cfm?method=content.view&content_id=1138&category_id=99 I have tried every possible option I could conjure-up with no avail. I have even exhaustively searched the FreeBSD Handbook and Man pages on-line, and other resources (such as Google) were no help. I thank you for any help yous' may provide to me. I am running short on time and patience in getting this system on-line. If this should have been send elsewhere, please let me know. ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca From owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Feb 7 21:54:43 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B9E1716A4CE; Mon, 7 Feb 2005 21:54:43 +0000 (GMT) Received: from mail.rimasec.net (nyc.rimasec.net [209.133.8.161]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2114F43D3F; Mon, 7 Feb 2005 21:54:43 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from rick@rimasec.net) Received: from localhost (mail.rimasec.net [209.133.8.163]) by mail.rimasec.net (Postfix) with ESMTP id 17E0F2B855; Mon, 7 Feb 2005 16:54:40 -0500 (EST) Received: from mail.rimasec.net ([209.133.8.163]) by localhost (nyc.rimasec.net [209.133.8.163]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id 17934-04; Mon, 7 Feb 2005 16:54:38 -0500 (EST) Received: from zombie.mtl.rptn.net (mtl.rptn.net [216.113.17.176]) (using TLSv1 with cipher RC4-MD5 (128/128 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mail.rimasec.net (Postfix) with ESMTP id C38752B836; Mon, 7 Feb 2005 16:54:38 -0500 (EST) From: Rick Fournier Organization: RimaSec Internet Services To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Date: Mon, 7 Feb 2005 16:54:32 -0500 User-Agent: KMail/1.7.2 References: <20050207200625.22499.qmail@web30203.mail.mud.yahoo.com> In-Reply-To: <20050207200625.22499.qmail@web30203.mail.mud.yahoo.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; boundary="nextPart12344668.FJuxiyshRD"; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; micalg=pgp-sha1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Message-Id: <200502071654.36262.rick@rimasec.net> X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-new at mta.rimasec.net cc: Shawn B cc: freebsd-questions@freebsd.org Subject: Re: ISP connection issue X-BeenThere: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Internet Services Providers List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 07 Feb 2005 21:54:44 -0000 --nextPart12344668.FJuxiyshRD Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Content-Disposition: inline You dont need any software from sympatico, you can use ppp from FreeBSD to = do=20 pppoe. http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/pppoe.html make sure your username ends with @sympatico.ca, then make sure you get val= id=20 sympatico DNS servers in your /etc/resolv.conf file. <-- I worked at sympatico once, their real bitches about unix/linux support= ,=20 and to think the guy from roaring penguin who wrote the linux pppoe client= =20 onced worked for them. they should at least recommend that one! --> =2DRick On February 7, 2005 03:06 pm, Shawn B wrote: > I am fairly new at *nix and FreeBSD. The ISP is Bell-Sympatico (Canada), and they you mean you can connect? can you ping their gateway ip. domain resolution is done via dns. You need to add the dns server address they provide to your /etc/resolv.conf file by hand, or run your own dnscache. i guess PPPoE only provides a gateway address which is handled by add default HISADDR below. > are completely unwilling to help me, or provide > software that will accommodate *nix systems sounds like SBC > specifically. The problem is I haven't got any idea how to supply different path to php.ini for second instance of apache (its location is defined at compile time). I don't want to install apache/php twice to different locations. I'd rather install it 'the right way' from ports and use two sets of configuration files. I could tweak startup scripts to change php.ini just before starting second instance of apache (this file is read once, just after start), but such hack doesn't sound nice to me ;-) Any ideas? -- Mikolaj Rydzewski http://ceti.pl/~miki/ PGP KeyID: 8b12ab02 There are three kinds of people: men, women, and unix. The GUI has several menus plus components but the problem is whenever I click on a menu say, 'Submit' after I have made some modifications, a web page comes up with the error, "Internal Server Error, please contact your Systems Administrator." To overcome this and view the page I want, I have to restart apache from command line. Yet at this point in time apache is actually running! My Apache and Perl versions are as below; apache+mod_ssl-1.3.33+2.8.22 mod_perl-1.29_1 Anyone got ideas on how I can go about this? Your quick responses will be highly appreciated. However, I have used other things, which are listed here. If you are trying to limit regular users from connecting to your system via their IMAP password that is in /etc/passwd, you could do the following: 1. Add an access list to the /etc/pam.d/ssh file auth required pam_listfile.so item=user sense=allow file=/etc/sshusers-allowed onerr=fail 2. Don't give the users on IMAP a shell account. /bin/false or /dev/null as their login shell 3. Firewall the machine so only a few IP's can use ssh. He means the error log file for whichever vhost you are running the perl script under. For example, if test.com is configured as a vhost in the Apache configuration, then test.com can have its own error log file. The error that you are looking for would be in that error log. If you are not sure where this log file is, check your Apache configuration file and just search for "ErrorLog" (case-sensitive). There should be more than one of these directives. The directive pointing to "/var/log/httpd-error.log" will be for the default config, and there should be others for each vhost (though not necessarily). Hopefully that helps you on your quest for the error message. The error that you gave could be just about any error with the perl script. Check that the script has the execute bit set for the user that Apache runs under (chmod +x ) -- Justin Hopper UNIX Systems Engineer BSDHosting.net Hosting Division of Digital Oasys Inc. http://www.bsdhosting.net From owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Feb 12 11:46:24 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D5A0B16A4CF for ; Sat, 12 Feb 2005 11:46:24 +0000 (GMT) Received: from mail.iinet.net.au (mail-02.iinet.net.au [203.59.3.34]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 8FD6143D2D for ; Sat, 12 Feb 2005 11:46:23 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from vk3heg@iinet.net.au) Received: (qmail 18117 invoked from network); 12 Feb 2005 11:43:55 -0000 Received: from unknown (HELO curl.ballaratwireless.net) (203.217.42.225) by mail.iinet.net.au with SMTP; 12 Feb 2005 11:43:55 -0000 From: Stephen To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Date: Sat, 12 Feb 2005 22:44:10 +1100 User-Agent: KMail/1.7.2 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline Message-Id: <200502122244.10367.vk3heg@iinet.net.au> Subject: Network mac address X-BeenThere: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Internet Services Providers List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 12 Feb 2005 11:46:25 -0000 Hello Everyone, I need to know if it's possable to change the network card's mac address on a FreeBSD 4.10 based machine. This machine is a firewall on a cable company's network and they use the mac address for billing etc. (The user's system has a subnet of ip's). The network card is playing up and I need to change it but keep the old cards hardware ethernet address: ie: ether 01:50:08:c1:f9:a1 -- Stephen - vk3heg Ph: 0409149641 From owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Feb 12 13:11:36 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 666AE16A4CE for ; Sat, 12 Feb 2005 13:11:36 +0000 (GMT) Received: from mail.day-light.net (day-light.net [64.37.72.2]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 251CD43D39 for ; Sat, 12 Feb 2005 13:11:36 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from john@day-light.com) Received: from w1 (gabriel.day-light.net [69.27.46.22]) by mail.day-light.net (Postfix) with SMTP id 8CCB2352B2; Sat, 12 Feb 2005 07:11:35 -0600 (CST) From: "John Brooks" To: "'Stephen'" , Date: Sat, 12 Feb 2005 07:11:35 -0600 Message-ID: <004c01c51104$6109c9e0$2005010a@daylight.net> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Priority: 3 (Normal) X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook CWS, Build 9.0.6604 (9.0.2911.0) In-Reply-To: <200502122244.10367.vk3heg@iinet.net.au> X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2800.1409 Importance: Normal Subject: RE: Network mac address X-BeenThere: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list Reply-To: john@day-light.com List-Id: Internet Services Providers List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 12 Feb 2005 13:11:36 -0000 try this: ifconfig link
