That's true. However, the notebook that I'm considering (see subject) consts 1400 Euro when bought at a decent internet shop (e.g. www.alternate.de), while it's only 1200 Euro at the local shop. 200 Euro is quite a big difference for my wallet. > I think this is better than using Freesbie in the local shop. The only difference wold be that I have a bit more time testing with the CD or DVD (two weeks vs. an hour or so). They are on the ASUS web site. ASUS are quite a reputable brand. I used to run 5 stable/release on it with little problems (Need to disable ACPI ) but I am now running 6 Stable and its running great. In terms of CPU power these laptops are a lot faster then what you can get from a Intel based Dell laptop (I have done the benchmarks on both in FreeBSD) Also note that ASUS are about to launch a new line of AMD64 Turion notebooks *Asus A6K - A6000K And **Asus A6U - A6700K* Although they don't look like there a great deal better, although a Turion CPU would be nice. http://www.amdboard.com/turion_64_notebook.html Regards, Mike Carlos Andrade wrote: >who makes good AMD64 laptops besides say Compaq? The overheating issue is most likely an e-machines issue, than an AMD one, per se. That being said, one thing to note on the AMD line, is that there really isn't a true low power mobile processor, either. Its basically Athlon64, Turion(sp), or Semperon, none of which would compare to say Pentium M, on power usage as far as I'm aware. I've had great luck with my AMD64 laptop, myself. (Well, the conclusion may not be wrong, but the reasoning is ). Turion64-CPUs consume about as much (or little) energy as Pentium-M chips. But due to better overall design, the total power-consumption of "Centrino"-laptops is some Watts less than that of Turion64-powered ones. http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/ProductInformation/0,,30_118_12651_12658,00.html Rainer From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Jul 13 09:05:15 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 24DA216A41C for ; Wed, 13 Jul 2005 09:05:15 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from giuseppe.argentieri@trotzky.fisica.unipd.it) Received: from trotzky.fisica.unipd.it (spiro.fisica.unipd.it [147.162.55.11]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0D41443D53 for ; Wed, 13 Jul 2005 09:05:13 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from giuseppe.argentieri@trotzky.fisica.unipd.it) Received: from gauss.fisica.unipd.it (gauss.fisica.unipd.it [192.168.1.24]) by trotzky.fisica.unipd.it (8.11.6/8.9.3) with ESMTP id j6D95Ae10811; Wed, 13 Jul 2005 11:05:10 +0200 Received: from gauss.fisica.unipd.it (localhost.localdomain [127.0.0.1]) by gauss.fisica.unipd.it (8.12.11/8.12.11) with ESMTP id j6D95Awp004506; Wed, 13 Jul 2005 11:05:10 +0200 Received: (from argentie@localhost) by gauss.fisica.unipd.it (8.12.11/8.12.11/Submit) id j6D957dw004504; Wed, 13 Jul 2005 11:05:08 +0200 Date: Wed, 13 Jul 2005 11:05:07 +0200 From: Giuseppe Argentieri To: Stefan Bauer Message-ID: <20050713090507.GA4421@gauss.fisica.unipd.it> References: <20050705142127.GA4186@gauss.fisica.unipd.it> <42D3E316.2090302@splatterworld.de> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <42D3E316.2090302@splatterworld.de> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.1i X-Operating-System: Linux gauss.fisica.unipd.it 2.4.21-15.0.2.EL Cc: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Subject: Re: PCMCIA issues X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: Giuseppe Argentieri List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 13 Jul 2005 09:05:15 -0000 On Tue, Jul 12, 2005 at 05:34:46PM +0200, Stefan Bauer wrote: >> Sometimes I get "Bad vcc request" errors and sometimes not. No output. I built a kernel.debug, too. Booting in verbose mode, with hw.cbb.debug=1 hw.pccard.debug=1 hw.cardbus.debug=1 hw.pccard.cis_debug=1 hw.cardbus.cis_debug=1 hw.wi.debug=1 I have the same messages. Well, not exactly the same: this time there is not the "Bad Vcc request" error but the pcmcia slot still not works. I think there is no way to increase the debug level. I peeked at the sources in dev/pccard/pccard.c dev/cardbus/cardbus.c dev/pccbb/pccbb.c but those TUNABLES seem to be only flags. I mean: putting hw.pccard.debug=1 or hw.pccard.debug=3 doesn't change anything. In pccbb.c there are two o2micro_power_hack() functions. Maybe O2Micro Controllers are not well supported at the present time. I'm going to put some printf around in order to have more information about those variables and structs, but honestly I have no idea of what they mean. > in case nothing happend, reboot the machine without acpi and see if you > get the same behaviors. Disabling ACPI the machine goes in kernel panic while booting. According to acpi(4) it's possible to disable only some acpi sub-drivers via "debug.acpi.disabled" environment variable. I've downloaded your driver and modified some bits to make it work with 6.0. The module builds fine, but the firmware is never uploaded. I turn the adapter on and the kernel finds it, but nothing happens. When I turn it off I see this: Turn on... When I run the 915resolution-program and try to change the Mode "3c" to 1440x1050, it will not complain, but the mode will still be the old one when I list the modes and resolutions again. So Xorg only runs with 1280x1024, which is unusable. Also, when I start X, it complains about missing agpgart-device: (EE) GARTInit: Unable to open /dev/agpgart (No such file or directory) (WW) I810(0): /dev/agpgart is either not available, or no memory is available for allocation. Using pre-allocated memory only. (II) I810(0): Checking Lid status enabled Is there a reason why it will not detect my I855-chipset? What can I do? I'm looking for a couple of things that I thought people on this list might have laying around their junk bins. I usually just buy stuff on ebay, but I've been having trouble finding some of these items (or knowing that I've found them). I'm looking for an antique 3com card: the 3C589. I have the B, C, D, E versions of this card, but not the 'A' card. I'm also looking for a few dongles for the C, D and E versions of this card as well (I have 7 of these cards w/o any dongles that I'd like to sell to help pay for other cards I've bought). I'm also looking for a 3C562C/3C563C ideally with dongles. I have the A, B and D variants. I'm also looking for more obscure ethernet and ethernet + modem cards. Obscure here means 'not supported by the FreeBSD system currently, but should be.' AND that I don't already have in my collection (see http://people.freebsd.org/~imp/CardStatus.html for most of the list). I'm looking for a Hermes II or Hermes II.5 wireless PC Card card. These are PC Card 802.11b cards made for a short while. They will have a manufacturer ID of 0x0156 and a product id of 0x0003 or 0x0004 (most wireless cards have 0x0002, to indicate they are Hermes I cards). The trouble with buying off of ebay is that I don't know if I'll get the classic version or the new version. I'd like to get the FreeBSD driver working before I try to play with a Zipit I've ordered. I'd like a sony 16V power supply for a PCG-505TS. I know that many different ones will work (including the PCGA-AC16V6 I have for my sony Z1). I don't use the machine much these days, as it is a little slow, but I do use it for testing and having a good power supply would be helpful. These are relatively easy to find on ebay, but since the old sony laptops tend to fail, I thought I'd see if someone here had an extra one. I'm also looking for a few extra hours in the day. However, I doubt anybody would have those they can give me :-) Warner
