On my H^HDell laptop, which seems to behave much the same as your Averatec, the volume and mute buttons actually generate X events, so I mapped the key codes to the corresponding XF86Audio* symbols and bound those to actions in my window manager, which then runs a script to poke mixer(8). $.02, /Mikko
