I'm looking at using one for a security application and was wanting to know other people's experiences and recommendations. I've had a bit of a look around and found a company in the UK (http://www.wordsworth.co.uk) who have a couple of cards which may do the trick nicely, but there only seems to be windows compatibility, no Linux/BSD support at all. The hardware MPEG-4 support is a preference. Currently I'm using a Hauppauge PVR-350 but that only produces MPEG-2 streams, which are a little too large for my liking. If anyone has any better recommendations, I'd be be happy to hear them. Please reply on the list (unless people think it's not important to archive the findings) Cheers Tim -- Tim Aslat Spyderweb Consulting http://www.spyderweb.com.au Phone: +61 8 84193434 Mobile: +61 0401088479 From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jun 6 10:15:40 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id EDB4F16A41C for ; Mon, 6 Jun 2005 10:15:40 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from fullermd@over-yonder.net) Received: from mortis.over-yonder.net (adsl-222-102-125.jan.bellsouth.net [68.222.102.125]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A3A0543D48 for ; Mon, 6 Jun 2005 10:15:40 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from fullermd@over-yonder.net) Received: by mortis.over-yonder.net (Postfix, from userid 100) id D504D20F61; Mon, 6 Jun 2005 05:15:38 -0500 (CDT) Date: Mon, 6 Jun 2005 05:15:38 -0500 From: "Matthew D. It will only show 'kld blah' if it is a kernel loaded module. I think the only driver that's missing the string is uaudio but I might have caught it recently, if not then pending commit has the change. Running several tests it seems a problem with the audio processing of nuv files because "-x nuv, null" works and "-x nuv" doesn't. Well, nobody with any SENSE is 8-} I doubt anybody in the last 5 years has built a system and put an ISA soundcard in it. And most newer systems don't even have ISA at all, anyway. I'd figure it's mostly people like me with older onboard stuff, or people who pulled an old card out of a box just to have some sound capability on a box that didn't warrant spending money on. I didn't even know (well, I _knew_, but I wasn't really conscious of) mind was on ISA until you reminded me. It always seemed nutty to me how many onboard peripherals were stuffed on ISA. Even on boards (like this one) with PCI slots, and even with boards (like this one) that only have a single shared ISA slot available anyway. It'd probably be a pretty bad thing to not SUPPORT the ISA cards, but I wouldn't trip over myself offering amenities to people using 'em. -- Matthew Fuller (MF4839) | fullermd@over-yonder.net Systems/Network Administrator | http://www.over-yonder.net/~fullermd/ On the Internet, nobody can hear you scream. Yes it's not ideal one. In theory we should have a common chipset support code and should have probing routine for each bus(PCI, ISA, SBus, EBus etc). However many parts of ISA soundcard code prevents this from happening. In addition, all audio drivers have implicit ISADMA dependency which is not needed at all for systems that does not have ISA bus(e.g. sparc64) Removing ISA dependency is hard since many old-cheap PCI audiocards assume ISADMA cycles on PCI bus and needs SoundBlaster compatible I/O operations when it runs at capturing mode. :-( It seems that it would be better to make snd_mss(4) document out of pcm(4) document. -- Regards, Pyun YongHyeon http://www.kr.freebsd.org/~yongari | yongari@freebsd.org From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Jun 7 07:21:22 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: FreeBSD-multimedia@freebsd.org Delivered-To: FreeBSD-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5ACA316A41C for ; Tue, 7 Jun 2005 07:21:22 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from jakemsr@jakemsr.com) Received: from mail231.csoft.net (resin.csoft.net [63.111.22.86]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id DB49043D55 for ; Tue, 7 Jun 2005 07:21:21 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from jakemsr@jakemsr.com) Received: (qmail 2778 invoked from network); 7 Jun 2005 07:21:23 -0000 Received: from unknown (HELO puff.jakemsr.gom) (63.111.27.87) by mail231.csoft.net with SMTP; 7 Jun 2005 07:21:23 -0000 Received: (from jakemsr@jakemsr.com) by puff.jakemsr.gom (mini_sendmail/1.3.5 16nov2003); Tue, 07 Jun 2005 00:21:20 PDT (sender jakemsr@puff.jakemsr.gom) Date: Tue, 7 Jun 2005 00:21:20 -0700 From: Jacob Meuser To: FreeBSD-multimedia@freebsd.org Message-ID: <20050607072120.GG12558@puff.jakemsr.gom> Mail-Followup-To: FreeBSD-multimedia@freebsd.org References: <42A457A7.95A86273@fadesa.es> <20050606151657.122e0bd3.steve@sohara.org> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit In-Reply-To: <20050606151657.122e0bd3.steve@sohara.org> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.2i Cc: Subject: Re: debugging transcode X-BeenThere: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Multimedia discussions List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 07 Jun 2005 07:21:22 -0000 On Mon, Jun 06, 2005 at 03:16:57PM +0100, Steve O'Hara-Smith wrote: > On Mon, 06 Jun 2005 16:03:19 +0200 > "José M. The second approach, granted, is rather drastic, and one which I'd just as soon avoid, but I've reached the point where I simply am no longer willing to put up with having no MIDI support. The only reason for this post is that I'm curious about just how satisfactory alternative (1) above would be. Assuming a kernel with a properly configured MIDI port (connected to an external synth, of course), what applications will I be able to use with this? I know that many of the current MIDI applications for Linux require ALSA, so that rules out quite a few of them right there. So what's left, then? I need a lot more than just simple MIDI playback; I want to be able to create my own sequences, preferably using my MIDI keyboard as an input device. Anyone currently doing anything in this area who could offer some opinions? Thanks. -- Conrad J. I'm not advocating #2 but I've yet to see anything really work with recording with either the old or new version of midi. If someone has contrary experience, I would love to know about it (you would not beleive the amount of time I wasted trying to get rosegarden to work). Anthem is quite cool and I think it's the closest application out there to working for record. Could you point to applications that require ALSA? I wonder what SALSA could do for us in this situation. Playbay is the most dificult to implement, recording is quite easy, we just haven't got there yet. --Mat -- From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Jun 9 10:49:25 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B647716A41C for ; Thu, 9 Jun 2005 10:49:25 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from conrads@cox.net) Received: from lakermmtao10.cox.net (lakermmtao10.cox.net [68.230.240.29]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E798943D60 for ; Thu, 9 Jun 2005 10:49:23 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from conrads@cox.net) Received: from dolphin.local.net ([68.11.70.216]) by lakermmtao10.cox.net (InterMail vM.6.01.04.00 201-2131-118-20041027) with ESMTP id <20050609104923.ITNM7787.lakermmtao10.cox.net@dolphin.local.net>; Thu, 9 Jun 2005 06:49:23 -0400 Received: from dolphin.local.net (conrads@localhost.local.net [127.0.0.1]) by dolphin.local.net (8.13.3/8.13.3) with ESMTP id j59AnMF3063004; Thu, 9 Jun 2005 05:49:22 -0500 (CDT) (envelope-from conrads@cox.net) Date: Thu, 9 Jun 2005 05:49:21 -0500 From: "Conrad J. I've bookmarked the link and will check it out ASAP. I've already decided that my previously mentioned alternative (2) was a tad *too* drastic. :-) I'm now scouting around for a reasonably priced IDE hard drive to install on my remaining spare controller, where I can then install Gentoo without having to wipe out my FreeBSD installation. I've put *way* too much time and effort into my existing setup to simply overwrite it just like that. :-) It looks like Office Depot, of all places, has some very good deals on 200 GB Maxtor drives. I may just go and pick one up later today at the local outlet. Anyway, one way or another, I *will* have a working MIDI setup here, and soon! I am so eager to get back into this, I can hardly stand it. I have never really fully explored everything that this keyboard of mine (a Yamaha SO3) is capable of. Should be quite interesting, not to mention just plain *fun*! :-) It will be interesting, I think, to do a cross-comparison of MIDI apps and functionality between FreeBSD (with Mat's MIDI patches) and Gentoo. Should keep me occupied for quite some time, I'm sure. :-) In the meantime, Mat, are you still looking to add es137x support to your patch set? I'm still hoping to avoid any unnecessary hardware purchases, as my financial situation is currently far from where I'd like it to be. :-) I just wish my low-level hardware programming skills were better than they are, so I could possibly contribute something meaningful to the code base. I'm competent enough as far as general C programming goes, but all of my attempts to explore the kernel, hardware drivers, etc. have left my head in a spin. :-) I have nothing but the greatest admiration for those who are working at that level and producing useful code. No small feat, for sure! Anyway, enough said for now. I'll post a later followup with any interesting and/or pertinent info. -- Conrad J. This new implementation try to address what the older one failed to do: *insane* / wide range rates support so you can play your super-ridiculous 1024000Hz ultrasonic mosquito repeller files *on the fly* without having to resample just to satisfy 4000 - 48000hz limit. The code also much shorter / cleaner, still preserving good old bits from Orion's implementation. The file is designed to be a drop in replacement for RELENG_5 / HEAD and you can get it at: http://staff.mybsd.org.my/skywizard/FreeBSD/sound/ feeder_rate.c : mandatory vchan.c : mandatory for those having fixed rate AC97 soundcard, or simply want to liberate themselves from 44100 vchan limit. Enjoy your ultra-insane sound, something like mplayer -af resample=1024000:0:2 should do that. As usual, feedback / comments are welcomed. -- Ariff Abdullah MyBSD http://www.MyBSD.org.my (IPv6/IPv4) http://staff.MyBSD.org.my (IPv6/IPv4) http://tomoyo.MyBSD.org.my (IPv6/IPv4)
