It seems to be the same product as Paragon Partition Manager 6.0 Personal Edition (http://www.partition-manager.com, US$49.95; Professional and Technician Editions cost US$99.95 and US$299.00, respectively). It has the same functions as Partition Magic, including resizing partitions, and works even when Partition Magic 8 refuses to. I've used it for some time now with satisfactory results. I don't use Windows 2003, but Partition Manager 2005 saved me a lot of headaches after I inadvertently installed Solaris 10 on a FreeBSD 4.10/Windows XP machine before making backup copies of my partition tables. Solaris 10 scrambled my partition table, and Partition Magic 8 only informed me of the problem, refusing to go further. Partition Manager detected the problem, and allowed me to fix it, without requiring me to dig out my various first aid and recovery tools. Since acquiring Partition Magic, Symantec doesn't seem to have done anything with it. -- Andre Holliday From owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Feb 6 08:10:17 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3C56916A4CE; Sun, 6 Feb 2005 08:10:17 +0000 (GMT) Received: from nezlok.unixathome.org (nezlok.unixathome.org [66.154.97.250]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1887443D41; Sun, 6 Feb 2005 08:10:17 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from dan@nezlok.unixathome.org) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by nezlok.unixathome.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1D86B57AB; Sun, 6 Feb 2005 00:10:14 -0800 (PST) Received: from nezlok.unixathome.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (nezlok.unixathome.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id 57268-05; Sun, 6 Feb 2005 00:10:04 -0800 (PST) Received: by nezlok.unixathome.org (Postfix, from userid 1000) id B91785571; Sun, 6 Feb 2005 00:10:02 -0800 (PST) From: Dan Langille To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org, freebsd-questions@freebsd.org Message-Id: <20050206081002.B91785571@nezlok.unixathome.org> Date: Sun, 6 Feb 2005 00:10:02 -0800 (PST) X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-new at unixathome.org Subject: The FreeBSD Diary: 2005-01-16 - 2005-02-05 X-BeenThere: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Gathering place for new users List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 06 Feb 2005 08:10:17 -0000 The FreeBSD Diary contains a large number of practical examples and how-to guides. I installed 5.3 stable from a set of CDs that also include a collection of additional packages. Installation went fine and the OS booted OK. I then copied the packages from the 6 Cds to a directory I created called /pkg, as recommended by the leaflet. I used on all CDs : cp /cdrom/All/* /pkg I then tried to install a package using : pkg_add /pkg/fr-kde-i18n-3.3.0.tbz I get a message that some needed packages cannot be found. But these packages are actually in the /pkg directory. I assume I have to create an INDEX file inside /pkg to tell pkg_add what is available in the directory. Any clue how I should do it ? Thanks all. There are updated rpms and the guys runnning the development / maintainence are extremely knwoledgable. It is sponsored commercially but currently the iso is still freely downloadable and is GPL. The only drawback (if this is one) is that you had better know what you are doing or be prepared to read read and read and only then post to the mailing list as people expect you to have done your homework. Having said all that its one of the best Linux server distros thats still free (IMHO) and if you like FreeBSD then you will probably like it. I'm trying to install 5.3 from both floppies and CD1. I'm dualbooting Win XP Pro using PartitionMagic8/BootMagic8 - but I do not think that is related. My other Toshiba laptop is using a similar configuration, and works fine. I saw in Google where at least 1 other person had this problem, but there was no resolution. But a vfat filesystem > could be mounted on R/W mode." Yes, I didn't mean to be snide when I responded, just a bit sarcastic. The problem isn't specific to FreeBSD. Physical security is on a different level. If someone has access to the physical box, there's not a lot you can do to prevent them from removing the HDD or the box itself, other than physical measures like locks. This isn't to say there is no other way to do this. I suggest that if mounting a partition from another fs is a security problem in your particular setup, and the users on your system have authority to mount filesystems, you might want to consider encrypting the sensitive data, or even the entire partition. Someone who has authority could still mount it, but they couldn't read it. > albi wrote : > > if you mount FreeBSD from Linux, it will only mount it read-only, > > does that make Linux less dangerous ? ;-) > > I do not have tested cos I'm not able up to now to mount the FreeBSD > filesystem (UFS ?) on my Debian Linux. Please Albi, can you explain to me > how to mount the FreeBSD partition on my ext2 or 3 filesystems ? You can mount UFS from Linux, but that's more of a Linux question anyway. I don't know the specific commands to do this, but it shouldn't be a whole lot different than other mount commands. Since this list isn't a tech help list, you might try -questions, but some people may also tell you that it's a Linux question. However, some quick searching reveals that ufs filesystems can be mounted read/write with the 2.6 kernel (maybe 2.1 and up) with something as simple as: mount -t ufs /dev/hda1 /mnt > > this behavior is pretty normal, from a Linux or FreeBSD > > installation you can easily mount a FAT-partition read/write on the > > same machine > > Yes, Linux do this with FAT but that doesn't hurt me because I > couldn't care less than Micro$oft vfat... > > > if you're interested in security maybe this webpage is interesting > > to read : > > http://www.defcon1.org/html/Security/Secure-Guide/secure-guide.html > > Thank you Albi ! I've a lot to learn about security. Well, again, once someone can mount stuff from the machine that you would rather they didn't, your options come down to encryption and physical security (AFAIK - I am no expert). You can designate what should(n't) be mounted in /etc/fstab, but of course this assumes you have control over that aspect of the system while other users do not. You can set user-level restrictions that should prevent this problem. A restricted user can't mount anything anyway. - jt From owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Feb 7 23:30:23 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AB47A16A4CE for ; Mon, 7 Feb 2005 23:30:23 +0000 (GMT) Received: from smtpauth01.mail.atl.earthlink.net (smtpauth01.mail.atl.earthlink.net [209.86.89.61]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5603843D49 for ; Mon, 7 Feb 2005 23:30:23 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from rpratt1950@earthlink.net) Received: from [204.215.32.27] (helo=kt.weeble.com) by smtpauth01.mail.atl.earthlink.net with asmtp (Exim 4.34) id 1CyIKd-0005tV-T1; Mon, 07 Feb 2005 18:30:19 -0500 DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; q=dns; c=simple; s=test1; d=earthlink.net; h=Date:From:To:Cc:Subject:Message-Id:In-Reply-To:References:X-Mailer:Mime-Version:Content-Type:Content-Transfer-Encoding; b=io3DhTCrdzwmzgIjKISX3sIHmEoAkM7xYUFf8NE8Vn0fx3kMMViruVghjVuTeX8f; Date: Mon, 7 Feb 2005 18:30:14 -0500 From: Randy Pratt To: Edward Lichtner Message-Id: <20050207183014.7697acde.rpratt1950@earthlink.net> In-Reply-To: References: <20050206195540.GA93364@cypher.bohemen.se> X-Mailer: Sylpheed version 1.0.1 (GTK+ 1.2.10; i386-portbld-freebsd4.11) Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-ELNK-Trace: 96132b9c1759af1df21c5f5255d6c174239a348a220c2609a126a814cc95210ba1e1398f5b5c0b4c666fa475841a1c7a350badd9bab72f9c350badd9bab72f9c X-Originating-IP: 204.215.32.27 cc: ibs@bohemen.se cc: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Creating an INDEX file for local tbz packages X-BeenThere: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Gathering place for new users List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 07 Feb 2005 23:30:23 -0000 On Mon, 07 Feb 2005 22:31:34 +0100 Edward Lichtner wrote: > > On Sun, Feb 06, 2005 at 01:26:26PM +0100, Edward Lichtner wrote: > >> I then tried to install a package using : pkg_add /pkg/fr-kde-i18n-3.3= .0.tbz > >> I get a message that some needed packages cannot be found. IIRC, styles go under: /usr/X11R6/share/blackbox/styles/ These are simply config type files that list various options for the window manager. One of the final lines was something like this: rootCommand: wmsetbg --scale /path/to/myphoto.jpg which simply tells the wm to set the root window's background to your preferred photo. Another cool place to look for info might be bsdforums.org; IIRC, there's a long thread there of people showing off their eye candy; you can pick up ideas and URL's of wallpapers, and probably a style file or two as well. All installation prodedure seems to be okay, but I couldn't start X-windows, because my video card is ATI Radeon 9250 and error message is unknow "ATI". I have checked X.org web site and they say they added more ATI chipset driver for this but I couldn't find specific 9259 chip. In addtion, FreeBSD 5.3 doesn't detect the NetGear WG311v2 wireless card. I'd like to ask a few questions and I would really appreciate if someone can help me. 1. If I cannot find the specific video card model in hardware support list, does it mean I cannot start X-windows at all? I hope there could be a 'Generic' driver for AGP video card although the card is not fully optimised. Can I tweak xorg.conf.new so that it works? 2. I wanted to install Xorg 6.8.1 but I couldn't yet because after 'Sysinstall', I connected to FTP and the FTP keeps connecting to release version which has 6.7 as 6.8.1 is in 'STABLE' version. So should I download individual files into each appropriate src directory and run 'make install' ? Let me tell you about my experience with FreeBSD: I have tried to install FreeBSD to 4 computers so far: 1. DELL 8200 with MGA G300 2. Penium Pro with Matrox millenium 3. Clevo M375C laptop + 855GM chipset 4. AMD64/Gigabyte with ATI Radeon 9250. Interestingly, Xorg and Gnome work with the Clevo laptop. But all the rest computers didn't work, although the FreeBSD didn't detect the sound card for the laptop. The Pentium Pro computer didn't work with FreeBSD 5.3 at all! So I installed 4.11. I thank you for reading my long email, and I'll appreciate your valuable advices. PS: I recently purchased a 'Complete FreeBSD' book, but unfortunately, the book talks about Xfree86 not Xorg :( From owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Feb 10 16:46:54 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7E77116A4CE for ; Thu, 10 Feb 2005 16:46:54 +0000 (GMT) Received: from postfix4-1.free.fr (postfix4-1.free.fr [213.228.0.62]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4462D43D1F for ; Thu, 10 Feb 2005 16:46:54 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from FabriceMarchant@free.fr) Received: from there (lyon-3-62-147-48-162.dial.proxad.net [62.147.48.162]) by postfix4-1.free.fr (Postfix) with SMTP id 9F1F028C41C for ; Thu, 10 Feb 2005 17:46:52 +0100 (CET) Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" From: Fabrice To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Date: Thu, 10 Feb 2005 12:34:17 +0100 X-Mailer: KMail [version 1.3.2] MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Message-Id: <20050210164652.9F1F028C41C@postfix4-1.free.fr> Subject: Sorry, FreeBSD is NOT dangerous. There's all nesessary options in kernel as it said in handbook (http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/usb-disks.html). Friendly speaking all the possible USB options was turned on in default GENERIC configuration. usbd is running - I can see it when I run "top". When I plug in usb-flash there's _no_ kernel messages in console, no "GEOM: create disk da0 dp=0xc2d74850" etc. "usbdevs" shows: >>addr1 UHCI root hub, Intel >>addr0 : should never happen! In 30 seconds kernel throws the following message: >>uhub0: device problem, disabling port 1 When I run FreeBSD LiveCD (called "Frenzy", based on 4.x) I can work with that usb-flash without any problems. Thus there's no hardware problems. I've compared /etc/rc.conf and /etc/usbd.conf at my FreeBSD and "Frenzy". No differences. I can't understand, where's the problem? On the other hand you can simply put port files (for example "samba-3.0.7.tar.gz" for samba3) into /usr/ports/distfiles. The ports install proces alway looks there first if the file he needs is already there and if it is uses it. As I understand there's only _ports_ at FreeBSD CD-ROM. And all the tarballs you should download from Internet, isn't it? Of course, there's a number of packages included in CD-ROM. But the most part of all those 12 thousands ports requires to download corresponding tarballs from Internet first. Of course, it is good idea to place tarballs in /usr/ports/distfiles (Item 2.) But anyway you should download them first from Internet. So there's no way to avoid Item 1. Am I wrong? // Sorry if I missunderstand something, I'm a real newbie. It is also available at http://people.freebsd.org/~sue/newbies/fak.html FreeBSD-Questions@FreeBSD.ORG is the place to send all questions about installing, configuring, running and using FreeBSD. All help requests are handled by FreeBSD-Questions, including newbies questions. It is particularly important to send all installation questions and answers to FreeBSD-Questions so that they only appear in one place. FreeBSD-Newbies is different. We don't ask for FreeBSD help or answer how-to questions. It is a discussion forum for newbies. FreeBSD-Newbies provides a place for new FreeBSD users to meet and covers any of the activities of newbies that are not already dealt with elsewhere. Examples include helping each other to learn more on our own, finding and using resources, problem solving techniques, how to seek help elsewhere, how to use mailing lists and which lists to use, general chat, making mistakes, boasting, sharing ideas, stories, moral (but not technical) support, and taking an active part in the FreeBSD community. We take our problems and support questions to freebsd-questions, and use freebsd-newbies to meet others who are doing the same things that we do as newbies. We can help people to use the FreeBSD mailing lists and resources, or to interact more productively with the broader FreeBSD community. These are not support questions, and not technical, so we deal with them here. Everyone can help with these new user orientation requests. One of the things we do together is learn more effective ways to find help when we need it. Here are some suggestions: When something doesn't work the way you expect 1. First look at the errata for your release of FreeBSD at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/releases/ for the latest information and security advisories. 2. Search the Handbook, FAQ, and mail archives at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/search/search.html 3. If you still have a question or problem, collect the output of `uname -a' and of any relevant program(s) and email your question to FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. Mailing lists When you have a problem that you can't solve by yourself, there's only one support mailing list and that's FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. FreeBSD-questions helps with installation and basic setup as well as more general and advanced questions. You don't have to actually join freebsd-questions before asking a question there. Replies to your question will normally be sent to you personally as well as to the list. Just make sure you have read and followed the guidelines for posting, because you might find them different to what you're used to. If you do subscribe to freebsd-questions you'll have the advantage of seeing all of the recent questions and their answers. Before you post to FreeBSD-questions, please read the guidelines at http://www.lemis.com/questions.html Many of the people who answer FreeBSD-questions are very knowledgeable, but they get frustrated when they get questions which are difficult to understand. http://www.lemis.com/email.html is worth reading too. If you're not sure that you can follow these guidelines, come back and ask the other newbies for help on how to post an effective question to the support mailing list. Maybe your question has been asked before. If you search the mailing list archives at http://www.freebsd.org/search/search.html first you might get the answer right away. It's always worth trying. Other mailing lists (http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/eresources.html#ERESOURCES-CHARTERS) cover specialised areas and many are more developer-oriented. You'll need to read their charters carefully before participating, but it's probably a good idea to ask on either -newbies or -questions for advice about where to post a more specialised question. FreeBSD-announce is a very low volume read-only list for occasional announcements, such as notice of new releases, and the Really Quick Newsletter. It's worth subscribing to FreeBSD-announce too. Manuals You'll always be expected to show that you have made some effort to use the available documentation before asking for help. That's not always as easy as it sounds! If you know what documentation you need but can't locate it, send a brief query to FreeBSD-questions. If you don't know what you need, always have trouble finding it, or can't make any sense of it when you do, ask some patient newbies to steer you in the right direction. Anyone interested in writing or reviewing documentation for FreeBSD is encouraged to join the FreeBSD Documentation Project. Details are at http://www.freebsd.org/docproj/docproj.html Other resources A resource list is available at http://www.freebsd.org/projects/newbies.html to help new and inexperienced FreeBSD users to find relevant information quickly. It includes books, on line documents and tutorials, and links to web pages that other newbies have found useful for learning. If you have a suggestion for good material to be included, please write to freebsd-newbies and tell us about it. But I have seen people asking questions here! It is quite common for people to send the wrong kind of post to a mailing list. Because we're newbies it'll certainly happen here from time to time. The best thing to do if you see a message that doesn't belong on a list is to ignore it. There's always someone around whose job it is to sort these problems out privately. The posts to the lists go straight through, whatever their content. It is going to be confusing for a little while because we're all newbies so we all make mistakes. That's OK. One thing we're going to see a fair bit is people posting questions, believing they're doing the right thing by posting here as newbies, not realising how it works. If someone answers those questions the situation will snowball. There's nothing wrong with helping someone to redirect their question to freebsd-questions, but please do so gently. There's nothing wrong with the occasional mistake either. So all questions, requests for help, etc still go to freebsd-questions as usual. Ours is more of a discussion group, a place where newbies can relax with other newbies and focus more on our successes than on our temporary imperfection. We can talk about things here that are not allowed on freebsd-questions. We're also a bit freer to make the mistakes that we need to make in order to learn. _________________________________________________________________ Mailing list membership To Subscribe to FreeBSD-Newbies: Use the easy form at http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-newbies to subscribe to the FreeBSD-Newbies mailing list, or to change your subscription details if you are already a member. This is a new laptop, P4-3Ghz, 512MB, 100GB drive, LAN & Wifi, etc. Anyone have success with the newer HP pavillions? thx -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. Take installing vim for example, after I type "make install" in /usr/ports/editors/vim, Freebsd will try to download files from ftp://ftp.freebsd.org. However, I want to let it download from ftp://ftp1.freebsd.org. How to make it ? Thank you. I'm not at all familiar with laptops so I can't begin to guess what might be the issue. I had an old 200Mhz box that I couldn't get the CD-ROM to boot Sysinstall but booting with floppies and using the CD-ROM as the installation media too care of that one. Good Luck! Well, there is no obvious reason why this should happen. Dual boot is a non-issue (I've multi-booted the system with WinXP, Linspire and Yellowtab Zeta without problem) but, of course, my chipset is different. I would advocate to send the very same message to questions@freebsd.org with the complete list of hardware (motherboard chipset, Ethernet chip, WIFI chipset etc. anything you can find on your machine): the experts are there and you obviously need them. Try to retrieve the exact error message: it can help. Sorry I can't help you more... Maybe now I get it! ;-) Sites for each port are listed in /usr/ports/Mk/bsd.sites.mk, and I think you *could* change it there. But I believe that the best method is setting MASTER_SITE_OVERRIDE in your environment or in /etc/make.conf. e.g, in tcsh: #setenv MASTER_SITE_OVERRIDE ftp1.freebsd.org #cd /usr/ports/editors/vim #make install clean If I remember correctly, in sh/bash it would be: $MASTER_SITE_OVERRIDE=ftp1.freebsd.org $export MASTER_SITE_OVERRIDE $cd /usr/ports/editors/vim $make install clean Hope this Helps!
