Frustrated, i switched off the comp and when i switched it back on, it was working. KDE is running by default. i installed most of the packages during the install. 1. Is there any list like windows add/remove programs list where i can see what programs i have installed? How do i change the default GUI or such applications? Guess that shouldn't be difficult and if i look around properly, i should find it. 2. How do i configure the sound card? i have intel 810 chipset. and AC97 on-board audio controller. 3. I have an internal modem which didn't get installed. And i cant kppp dialer because of that. It is a winmodem. The model is sm56 by motorola. I had lots of probs installing this modem in RedHat9 long back. I wud be glad if someone can help me with these. It is hooked up via parallel port and I can print fine with it from Windows. However, I can't get it to work in FreeBSD. I followed the instructions here: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/printing-intro-setup.html Everything seems to be fine. But when I try to test the printer using a command similar to this: # cat file > /dev/lptN or this: lptest > /dev/lpt0 nothing happens. Does anyone have a clue what I might have done wrong? Without a specific filter for PostScript or a specific driver for the printer, no two-way communication would work, yet most modern LPT ports are set for ECP/EPP by default. I would suggest that you submit a more detailed description of the problem to "questions@freebsd.org" (a more appropriate list with a wider, more experienced readership) and see what comes up. Be sure to include the output of `uname -a`, note whether lpd is up and running (use `top` or maybe `ps -ax | grep lpd`), any unusual messages in /var/log/messages or /var/log/lpd-errs, etc. Alternatively, many people like apsfilter (/usr/ports/print/apsfilter), written by Andreas Klemm, to do most of the config work for them. I imagine that the "hpijs" driver (which is bundled into apsfilter IIRC) would easily support your 710c. There is a shell script which does a lot of setup and testing for you, and you get PostScript printing, which is much better than simply feeding ASCII to the line printer daemon. Be sure to read his documentation if you try to use it, though! Good luck! PPA is a proprietary HP format for which there is no native support in either Linux or FreeBSD, but only in Windows (and possibly Mac). Have a look at http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=HP-DeskJet_710C for some hints. There is more information elsewhere, but I don't have the links handy. In summary, you have to first produce PostScript output, convert it to PPM with Ghostscript, and finally convert that to PPA before sending it off to the HW. Personally, I set the printer up like this in printcap: dj720c|lp|HP DeskJet 720C:sd=/var/spool/lpd/dj720c:sh:if=/usr/local/bin/ppa-test -filter:lp=/dev/lpt0: where ppa-test-filter (my naming, was supposed to be temporary) contains #!/bin/sh #cat $1 | \ /usr/local/bin/gs -sDEVICE=ppmraw -q -sPAPERSIZE=a4 -dNOPAUSE -dQUIET -r600 -sst dout=%stderr -sOutputFile=- - | \ /usr/local/bin/pnm2ppa -i - -o - (third line broken). You need to install the ports print/ghostscript (7.07 is the version I'm running) and print/pnm2ppa (I run version 1.12). Both are called from the ppa-test-filter script. Then you can feed PostScript output to the printer (dj720c or lp in my case). Don't forget to read the pnm2ppa documentation for calibration and fine-tuning. It took me quite an amount of hours to get it going. I hope I saved you some of those hours with the above. -- Kjell From owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Feb 15 16:47:36 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id EA45516A4D1 for ; Tue, 15 Feb 2005 16:47:36 +0000 (GMT) Received: from raq03.pennyhost.com (www.scdlabs.com [216.250.231.193]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 12B3643D31 for ; Tue, 15 Feb 2005 16:47:36 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from ogiraldo@aquasinc.com) Received: from OSCAR (ip66-3-236-81.z236-3-66.customer.algx.net [66.3.236.81]) by raq03.pennyhost.com (8.10.2/8.10.2) with SMTP id j1FGlXb25318 for ; Tue, 15 Feb 2005 11:47:33 -0500 From: "Oscar Giraldo" To: Date: Tue, 15 Feb 2005 11:48:58 -0500 Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Priority: 3 (Normal) X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook IMO, Build 9.0.2416 (9.0.2911.0) X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2900.2180 Importance: Normal Subject: I mess with file /etc/ttys X-BeenThere: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Gathering place for new users List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 15 Feb 2005 16:47:37 -0000 I made some changes to the file /etc/ttys, but I did a wrong entry in the ttyv0 section, so my login prompt is not showing now, how can I fix this file to boot normally. I've never done anything with Firewall on a *NIX system without the help of Webmin, and I'm new to BSD in general. Webmin gives me an error when trying to use the BSD Firewall module. I tried doing "ipfw sh" to see what was up, and I get "ipfw: getsockopt(IP_FW_GET): Protocol not available" I found a post from a while back that said I need to recompile my kernel. I can't imagine that that's the case for a firewall in general. I need a firewall... if I can't use Webmin (read: ipfw) I'm gonna need a REALLY good howto :-P. Any help? But I can tell you that if you follow the instructions of the handbook, you will for sure have enough informations to get you going. The handbook its a really good documentation, not only for FreeBSD but for a lot more ;^) And Yes, you need to recompile the kernel if you want to use your system for a firewalling purpose. But that's not an hack ..... its preety easy. I personally find it easyer than in linux ( with all respects ), I already used ipfw in FreeBSD-4.X and ipf and pf with OpenBSD. Now that the new STABLE BRANCH 5.3 its including the pf firewall from OpenBSD, I use that, 'cause I find it really powerfull and yet nice to configure. just take a look at the handbook, and you'll find a lot of answers to your questions. You find the documentation also on your system: /usr/share/doc/en/books for english language documentation :) Have fun with FreeBSD. Its Free, Powerfull and has a DAEMON in it. alex -- ** acme aka Alex D'Elia ** http://root.acme.com ** priv:: alex@fan.priv.at From owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Feb 16 21:05:52 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E037916A4CE for ; Wed, 16 Feb 2005 21:05:52 +0000 (GMT) Received: from smtp05.mrf.mail.rcn.net (smtp05.mrf.mail.rcn.net [207.172.4.64]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3689843D2D for ; Wed, 16 Feb 2005 21:05:52 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from crzdgns1@starpower.net) Received: from ms07.mrf.mail.rcn.net (207.172.4.13) by smtp05.mrf.mail.rcn.net with ESMTP; 16 Feb 2005 16:05:51 -0500 X-IronPort-AV: i="3.90,90,1107752400"; d="scan'208"; a="5311376:sNHT398411146" Received: from 128.231.88.4 by ms07.mrf.mail.rcn.net (MOS 3.5.6-GR) with HTTP/1.1; Wed, 16 Feb 2005 16:05:51 -0500 Date: Wed, 16 Feb 2005 16:05:51 -0500 From: To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org X-Mailer: Mirapoint Webmail Direct 3.5.6-GR MIME-Version: 1.0 Message-Id: <3aeecac6.cfb2dd90.81b5e00@ms07.mrf.mail.rcn.net> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Subject: Newbie Question; security logs X-BeenThere: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Gathering place for new users List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 16 Feb 2005 21:05:53 -0000 Hello, I have been checking my logs lately and find that a lot of access attempts have been blocked. How do I evaluate whether or not my computer is >safe? > >Thanks > >Mark > > Hello, Mark If you can redirect your question to questions@freebsd.org, you will get a larger and more well-educated audience, and perhaps some better responses. Really, it's not supposed to be here at all, I think. The Handbook's "Security" chapter is required reading, I should think. IIRC, it's chapter 14. You should not run any computer hooked directly to the internet without a firewall. Use good passwords. Change them occasionally. Note any system accounts with no passwords in your daily "root" emails. You should keep your operating system up to date. Quite a bit of Handbook info on this as well. Currently, "up to date" is a freebsd version listed at www.freebsd.org/security, with a kernel date later than the last security advisory (try "uname -a") or **known** to have been patched for any vulnerabilities. Subscribe to "freebsd-security-notifications@freebsd.org" --- you'll get announcements from the security officer as soon as any problems in the base OS are detected. Sometimes they are nice enough to advise of problems with many of the most common software packages, but it's not an obligation for them to do so. Check the output of "netstat -anf inet". If any servers are listening on your outside interface, they shouldn't be, unless you want them to be. If you have daemons listening to the Internet, they are available for anyone to connect to, unless you deny access via a firewall or /etc/hosts.allow. Needless to say, you need to stay on top of any "bug notices" that come from the suppliers of these programs. Most of the log messages you see are from automated tools searching for Linux installations with services protected by lazy passwords. Some could be more serious, but don't lose heart! One strategy for sshd; use /etc/hosts.allow, and deny access to everyone (unless you need to be able to use this system from outside). If you are running ipfw (you mention it, but give few details), try something like "ipfw add $n deny ip from any to me setup via $oif" where $n is a low rule number (so this gets placed before any accept rules and $oif is your outward facing interface) in your firewall rules. If your machine dosent have any server running you need to have ports listening: root# sockstat -4 This show you all the ports listening. If you have some ports listening, check the services manpage and check how can you disable or listening only local information. There must be more sites where you can find portscanners to test your machine, if some else know others site i will like to know to :-). One good google search will good :-) Good luck!!! Pretty soon I'll have an ASP .NET web application completed and ready for hosting on said server. I'd prefer to continue using FreeBSD, and at least get the hang of it, as from what I've looked up it seems to be among the best of the best operating systems. The *NIX ASP .NET server I was using was XSP, from the Mono project, but the only FreeBSD port I could find of it has some fatal errors that need to be worked out before it works at all (In the BSD# project). Are there any other ASP .NET servers out there for FreeBSD? I tryed to google it, but all I could find was XSP and Microsoft sites. You might want to see if you can get XSP running using Linux emulation. (This may take lots of work, and I have no real experience with this sort of thing - my skills in Linux emulation are focused on getting games to run (-: ). > Are there any other ASP .NET servers out there for FreeBSD? I am running IPFilter as my firewall using the ruleset found in the Handbook. I have found that FTP no longer functions since I began the filter. I have done lots of searching on the web and I think this is a common problem and I will be able to find a solution on my own. But here is my question. The solutions to this problem variously refer to ftp clients or ftp servers. I know that a client and a server aren't necessarily the same. If I look in my bin files, I find something named ftpd, which I assume is the ftp daemon. I know that I didn't specifically download or install any ftp software. Whatever I have came with the base installation. So here is my question, how do I know, or how do I determine, if what I have is an ftp server or an ftp client? "ftpd" is the server, maintained by FreeBSD, and the ftp client is "ftp", which is actually "lukemftp", written by Luke Mewburn of the NetBSD project. Some information from the system itself: [kadmin@archangel][~] whereis ftpd ftpd: /usr/libexec/ftpd /usr/share/man/man8/ftpd.8.gz /usr/src/libexec/ftpd [kadmin@archangel][~] grep -i -A 2 rcsid /usr/src/libexec/ftpd/ftpd.c static const char rcsid[] = "$FreeBSD: src/libexec/ftpd/ftpd.c,v 1.163.2.10 2005/01/22 16:40:11 yar Exp $"; #endif /* not lint */ [kadmin@archangel][~] whereis ftp ftp: /usr/bin/ftp /usr/share/man/man1/ftp.1.gz /usr/src/usr.bin/ftp [kadmin@archangel][~] grep -i -A 2 rcsid /usr/src/contrib/lukemftp/src/main.c __RCSID("$NetBSD: main.c,v 1.86 2003/08/07 11:13:56 agc Exp $"); #endif #endif /* not lint */ It seems interesting that neither of them seem to have a "--version" switch. It looks as though some work has been done, maybe on the ftpd server lately. Note that "Trivial ftpd" is also in the base system. Both of these may be enabled in /etc/inetd.conf (and, in turn, inetd is enabled in /etc/rc.conf.) To use the ftp client, simply type "ftp" at the command prompt (assuming your $PATH is correctly set). See the man page for ftp(1) for more details. If it belongs in freebsd-questions, please let me know and I will post it there. Now then... I think I am beginning to accept the fact that I can't read, so I'll just state that condition from the beginning. I have installed FreeBSD-5.3-RELEASE and use IPFilter as my firewall. I have only one machine, with a cable modem connection to the internet. I have been following the directions in the Handbook, or so I thought, until yesterday. Yesterday I posted a message here titled something like "Which FTP do I have?" and received many helpful replies. Thank you! My FTP client still doesn't work and the reason it doesn't work is, I believe, I didn't follow the directions, which I discovered upon further reading of the handbook last night. My questions for today are mostly for clarification of what is written in the handbook, starting at section 24.5.18, Enabling IPNAT. I do not currently have IPNAT enabled. Given that I am a homeuser with only one machine, must I have IPNAT enabled for FTP to work properly? The ipf.rules in the handbook seem to indicate so, but I would appreciate confirmation. Secondly, the first rule in section 24.5.18 enables the computer as a gateway. I was under the impression that it is wisest not to use this rule unless you genuinely intend to use the machine in question as a gateway. Am I correct? If so, can I leave the first rule out and just include the second and third rules and still expect the IPNAT FTP proxy to function? Thirdly, I am trying to follow the directions, believe it or not. Assume for the moment that I use all three rules listed in 24.5.18 of the handbook. Since I have only one computer, can I then skip directly to section 24.5.21.1, IPNAT Rules, add the three rules there, and then have a reasonable expectation that FTP will work properly from behind my firewall? Again, I am using the ipf.rules listed in the handbook. It is also available at http://people.freebsd.org/~sue/newbies/fak.html FreeBSD-Questions@FreeBSD.ORG is the place to send all questions about installing, configuring, running and using FreeBSD. All help requests are handled by FreeBSD-Questions, including newbies questions. It is particularly important to send all installation questions and answers to FreeBSD-Questions so that they only appear in one place. FreeBSD-Newbies is different. We don't ask for FreeBSD help or answer how-to questions. It is a discussion forum for newbies. FreeBSD-Newbies provides a place for new FreeBSD users to meet and covers any of the activities of newbies that are not already dealt with elsewhere. Examples include helping each other to learn more on our own, finding and using resources, problem solving techniques, how to seek help elsewhere, how to use mailing lists and which lists to use, general chat, making mistakes, boasting, sharing ideas, stories, moral (but not technical) support, and taking an active part in the FreeBSD community. We take our problems and support questions to freebsd-questions, and use freebsd-newbies to meet others who are doing the same things that we do as newbies. We can help people to use the FreeBSD mailing lists and resources, or to interact more productively with the broader FreeBSD community. These are not support questions, and not technical, so we deal with them here. Everyone can help with these new user orientation requests. One of the things we do together is learn more effective ways to find help when we need it. Here are some suggestions: When something doesn't work the way you expect 1. First look at the errata for your release of FreeBSD at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/releases/ for the latest information and security advisories. 2. Search the Handbook, FAQ, and mail archives at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/search/search.html 3. If you still have a question or problem, collect the output of `uname -a' and of any relevant program(s) and email your question to FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. Mailing lists When you have a problem that you can't solve by yourself, there's only one support mailing list and that's FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. FreeBSD-questions helps with installation and basic setup as well as more general and advanced questions. You don't have to actually join freebsd-questions before asking a question there. Replies to your question will normally be sent to you personally as well as to the list. Just make sure you have read and followed the guidelines for posting, because you might find them different to what you're used to. If you do subscribe to freebsd-questions you'll have the advantage of seeing all of the recent questions and their answers. Before you post to FreeBSD-questions, please read the guidelines at http://www.lemis.com/questions.html Many of the people who answer FreeBSD-questions are very knowledgeable, but they get frustrated when they get questions which are difficult to understand. http://www.lemis.com/email.html is worth reading too. If you're not sure that you can follow these guidelines, come back and ask the other newbies for help on how to post an effective question to the support mailing list. Maybe your question has been asked before. If you search the mailing list archives at http://www.freebsd.org/search/search.html first you might get the answer right away. It's always worth trying. Other mailing lists (http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/eresources.html#ERESOURCES-CHARTERS) cover specialised areas and many are more developer-oriented. You'll need to read their charters carefully before participating, but it's probably a good idea to ask on either -newbies or -questions for advice about where to post a more specialised question. FreeBSD-announce is a very low volume read-only list for occasional announcements, such as notice of new releases, and the Really Quick Newsletter. It's worth subscribing to FreeBSD-announce too. Manuals You'll always be expected to show that you have made some effort to use the available documentation before asking for help. That's not always as easy as it sounds! If you know what documentation you need but can't locate it, send a brief query to FreeBSD-questions. If you don't know what you need, always have trouble finding it, or can't make any sense of it when you do, ask some patient newbies to steer you in the right direction. Anyone interested in writing or reviewing documentation for FreeBSD is encouraged to join the FreeBSD Documentation Project. Details are at http://www.freebsd.org/docproj/docproj.html Other resources A resource list is available at http://www.freebsd.org/projects/newbies.html to help new and inexperienced FreeBSD users to find relevant information quickly. It includes books, on line documents and tutorials, and links to web pages that other newbies have found useful for learning. If you have a suggestion for good material to be included, please write to freebsd-newbies and tell us about it. But I have seen people asking questions here! It is quite common for people to send the wrong kind of post to a mailing list. Because we're newbies it'll certainly happen here from time to time. The best thing to do if you see a message that doesn't belong on a list is to ignore it. There's always someone around whose job it is to sort these problems out privately. The posts to the lists go straight through, whatever their content. It is going to be confusing for a little while because we're all newbies so we all make mistakes. That's OK. One thing we're going to see a fair bit is people posting questions, believing they're doing the right thing by posting here as newbies, not realising how it works. If someone answers those questions the situation will snowball. There's nothing wrong with helping someone to redirect their question to freebsd-questions, but please do so gently. There's nothing wrong with the occasional mistake either. So all questions, requests for help, etc still go to freebsd-questions as usual. Ours is more of a discussion group, a place where newbies can relax with other newbies and focus more on our successes than on our temporary imperfection. We can talk about things here that are not allowed on freebsd-questions. We're also a bit freer to make the mistakes that we need to make in order to learn. _________________________________________________________________ Mailing list membership To Subscribe to FreeBSD-Newbies: Use the easy form at http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-newbies to subscribe to the FreeBSD-Newbies mailing list, or to change your subscription details if you are already a member. That's a bit sad. Instead I saw on the handbook that uncommenting a line on inetd.conf should do the trick (I suppose that I must put "inetd_enable" in rc.conf as well..). But I would prefer not to use inetd, because I don't like this concept much. So what should I do ? Use inetd anyway ? What's the best way ? Thanks.
