Today I've done a cvsup to 5.4-RELEASE-p8 and built a new kernel. But now I have problems with xine because if I watch a DVD then I get about two short freezes per second. With my old 5.4-RELEASE kernel I have no problems and the config is exactly the same... Does anyone know a solution for this problem? Is there a tag or something else which I can use in my cvs-supfile to go back to 5.4-RELEASE? Many thanks in advance! Unfortunately, we had to implement some other changes (local dcc server) that would impact the performance numbers, but I can report that it is stable after a week. I am going to disable the setting tonight and go back to net.isr.direct=0 to get a day or two worth of stats to see what that does to the average message processing time and overall load average. But it does seem stable. Nice to know this important detail... It would be quite interesting to know if you see the same problem in 6.0 or not. One of the things that is turned on in 6.0 by default is kernel preemption -- it was off in the 5.x series for stability reasons, as it depends on a fair amount of locking refinement, etc. One of the impacts of having four logical processors instead of two is that when interrupts come in, a logical processor is more likely to be free, so the ithread may start running earlier on 5.x if HTT is on, as it will get scheduled to another CPU. In 6.x, it can simply preempt any currently running kernel code, meaning it runs faster. So in 5.x, with a somewhat busy kernel, you see quite a bit lower interrupt processing latency with more processors, whereas in 6.x, it is consistently a lot lower because the ithread can run much more quickly regardless of the number of processors. (This isn't 100% true, but it's fairly true). Hi, I get them directly from Areca. I have bcc'd the Calvin (the guy I have dealt with) so he can contact you. Like I said before, they have been great cards for me under FreeBSD. Linux performs well too, but is a bit of a pain as its not part of the default kernel. But performance has been great and the extremely stable. We are going to try some of the PCI-e versions next month. My experience to date has been with the PCI-X versions only. I finally got my 3ware 9500SX today and should have time to test next week as I dont have a spare PCI-X board in the lab right now. Should be able to get a decent comparison performance wise between the two boards with respect to FreeBSD. ---Mike From owner-freebsd-performance@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Oct 29 04:07:07 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-performance@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-performance@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 774A116A420 for ; Sat, 29 Oct 2005 04:07:07 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from francisco@natserv.net) Received: from zoraida.natserv.net (p65-147.acedsl.com [66.114.65.147]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 297E643D45 for ; Sat, 29 Oct 2005 04:07:07 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from francisco@natserv.net) Received: from localhost (localhost.natserv.net [127.0.0.1]) by zoraida.natserv.net (Postfix) with ESMTP id 560E67DA0; Sat, 29 Oct 2005 00:07:06 -0400 (EDT) Date: Sat, 29 Oct 2005 00:07:06 -0400 (EDT) From: Francisco X-X-Sender: fran@zoraida.natserv.net To: Shanker Balan In-Reply-To: <20050923122011.GV33413@yahoo-inc.com> Message-ID: <20051029000602.P43285@zoraida.natserv.net> References: <20050922214709.Q50836@zoraida.natserv.net> <84dead7205092219023228cdf5@mail.gmail.com> <20050923080435.J58927@zoraida.natserv.net> <20050923122011.GV33413@yahoo-inc.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed X-Mailman-Approved-At: Sat, 29 Oct 2005 15:32:59 +0000 Cc: freebsd-performance@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Finding what's causing I/O X-BeenThere: freebsd-performance@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Performance/tuning List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 29 Oct 2005 04:07:07 -0000 On Fri, 23 Sep 2005, Shanker Balan wrote: > See top(1): > > m Toggle the display between 'cpu' and 'io' modes. Thanks for the feedback. had not had a chace to read lists for weeks.. That does exactly what I need. My only complain is that once one switches to that mode that the default sort is not "total". Looking at their site it seems as if one could buy directly from them, but did not find any prices.
