I have to confess: burncd causes an ATA panic >on the eMac, so I burnt on i386. Another bug to chase down :) After seeing the advice from Lucas Holt, I bought a copy of Toast. Using Toast I was able to burn the ISO without any trouble. The ISO still does not work on my PowerMac G4 (AGP graphics), 500 MHz, but it is quite likely that the problem is in the hardware. I tried the ISO on my G4 cube at home, and it looks like it would work great on that (but I'm still using that cube so I did not try to install on it). It looks like Apple's new mini-Mac machine would be a fine replacement for my G4 cube, so I'll probably buy one of those and then I could install FreeBSD on my cube. However, I was also wondering if FreeBSD would run in the mini-Mac itself. It has a 1.25-GHz or 1.42-GHz G4, ATA hard disk, 10/100 ethernet, and a Radeon 9200 video card. What are the chances that FreeBSD/PPC will work on it? I suppose I should wait until they are at least shipping before I asked, but I wanted to get the question in early... :-) -- Garance Alistair Drosehn = gad@gilead.netel.rpi.edu Senior Systems Programmer or gad@freebsd.org Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute or drosih@rpi.edu From owner-freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Jan 13 21:19:30 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5062E16A4CE for ; Thu, 13 Jan 2005 21:19:30 +0000 (GMT) Received: from liberty.onthenet.com.au (liberty.OntheNet.com.au [203.22.124.10]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AC9CC43D53 for ; Thu, 13 Jan 2005 21:19:29 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from grehan@freebsd.org) Received: from [203.144.31.113] (CPE-31-113.dsl.onthenet.net [203.144.31.113]) j0DLJRnP093639; Fri, 14 Jan 2005 07:19:28 +1000 (EST) (envelope-from grehan@freebsd.org) Message-ID: <41E6E721.9080305@freebsd.org> Date: Fri, 14 Jan 2005 07:24:49 +1000 From: Peter Grehan User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; FreeBSD i386; en-US; rv:1.7.2) Gecko/20041016 X-Accept-Language: en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Garance A Drosihn References: <41D4B6BD.3050705@freebsd.org> <41D4DD19.7090105@freebsd.org> In-Reply-To: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit cc: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Subject: Re: PPC miniinst.iso available [ & Mini-Mac? ] X-BeenThere: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the PowerPC List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 13 Jan 2005 21:19:30 -0000 Hi Garance, > However, I was also wondering if FreeBSD would run in the mini-Mac > itself. My guess is that it's Powerbook-style internals i.e. the Intrepid ASIC: http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Hardware/Developer_Notes/Macintosh_CPUs-G4/15inchPowerBookG4/index.html And there shouldn't be any issues with that. later, Peter.
