I think you might have gotten to the wrong place accidentally. this=20 mailing list is pretty much for developers. we tried to get decent=20 documentation available on the internet, but from your confusion it=20 looks like we missed the boat. The PPC platform isn't a priority for=20 fBSD, and as such isn't fully supported. If you want to run a=20 non-Apple OS and need it now, NetBSD is a really strong and capable=20 machine. If you want to help out with fBSD development on PPC, then=20 you've found the right place. Dag isn't trying to be a jerk, but we=20 get a lot of people who wander in here without looking at anything else=20= clamoring about weather or not their particular box is supported, and=20 the answer is that none of them are. If you're willing to give the=20 test environment a shot, there are directions and some images that=20 peter grehan has put together, but it's not a full release yet. I=20 believe that if you look through the archives you can find all of this=20= information and more about the current status of the fBSD Port. Their=20= location currently escapes me, but google knows. Hope this information helps, -James -------------------------------------------- "Never trust a man who can count to 1024 on his fingers" -------------------------------------------- On Apr 24, 2005, at 9:34 AM, Mauro wrote: > On Sun, 2005-04-24 at 18:24 +0200, Dag-Erling Sm=F8rgrav wrote: >> Mauro writes: >>> If you want to be held by the hand and told how to install you can >>> go to the appropriate corresponding bsd sites. >> >> If I wanted to know about OpenBSD or NetBSD, I'd have asked about >> OpenBSD or NetBSD. If you check this mailing list back in late January, there's a few threads related to the Mac Mini. One of them has the subject of "Mac mini and FreeBSD - some initial details", which details how I got FreeBSD/ppc up-and-running on my mac-mini. (I bought a Mac-mini on the first Saturday they were available). Upgrading can be a bit tricky, if something goes wrong due to the new kernel. You have to resort to tricks to boot up the previous kernel. But for the most part, upgrading freebsd/ppc has gone okay for me. The port has definitely improved over the past few months. Note that if you are going to do your own buildworlds, then there are still a few updates to gcc that you will have to apply before trying to compile freebsd/ppc. Those haven't made it into the base system yet, even though many other ppc-related updates have been committed. Need updates to: contrib/gcc/config/rs6000/rs6000.c contrib/gcc/config/rs6000/sysv4.h All of this is only available on 6.x-current. You cannot run 5.x-stable on FreeBSD/ppc. You also can't run cvsup on PPC, so I run cvsup on a source directory on one of my other FreeBSD machines, and then nfs-mount that on my FreeBSD/PPC machine. There have been a number of messages to this mailing list which have little bits of useful information. As Mauro noted, *some* of that info is collected in the FreeBSD developers' wiki at: http://wikitest.freebsd.org/moin.cgi/powerpc but not all of it. Of course, freebsd/ppc is very much a moving target, so some tricks that were important in January might not be as important now. I have no experience with netbooting my Mac-mini, so I can't say anything useful wrt that. -- Garance Alistair Drosehn =3D gad@gilead.netel.rpi.edu Senior Systems Programmer or gad@freebsd.org Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute or drosih@rpi.edu From owner-freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Apr 25 08:07:31 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 507EA16A4CE for ; Mon, 25 Apr 2005 08:07:31 +0000 (GMT) Received: from bgo1smout1.broadpark.no (bgo1smout1.broadpark.no [217.13.4.94]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id EB66D43D31 for ; Mon, 25 Apr 2005 08:07:30 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from des@des.no) Received: from bgo1sminn1.broadpark.no ([217.13.4.93]) by bgo1smout1.broadpark.no (Sun Java System Messaging Server 6.1 HotFix 0.05 (built Oct 21 2004)) with ESMTP id <0IFH00H26SYY3O90@bgo1smout1.broadpark.no> for ppc@freebsd.org; Mon, 25 Apr 2005 10:01:46 +0200 (CEST) Received: from dsa.des.no ([80.203.228.37]) by bgo1sminn1.broadpark.no (Sun Java System Messaging Server 6.1 HotFix 0.05 (built Oct 21 2004)) with ESMTP id <0IFH00H5DTA71VF0@bgo1sminn1.broadpark.no> for ppc@freebsd.org; Mon, 25 Apr 2005 10:08:31 +0200 (CEST) Received: by dsa.des.no (Pony Express, from userid 666) id 7B9294516B; Mon, 25 Apr 2005 10:07:29 +0200 (CEST) Received: from xps.des.no (xps.des.no [10.0.0.12]) by dsa.des.no (Pony Express) with ESMTP id AC61645157; Mon, 25 Apr 2005 10:07:24 +0200 (CEST) Received: by xps.des.no (Postfix, from userid 1001) id 83FA833C09; Mon, 25 Apr 2005 10:07:24 +0200 (CEST) Date: Mon, 25 Apr 2005 10:07:24 +0200 From: des@des.no (=?iso-8859-1?q?Dag-Erling_Sm=F8rgrav?=) In-reply-to: To: Garance A Drosihn Message-id: <86pswj7003.fsf@xps.des.no> MIME-version: 1.0 Content-type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-transfer-encoding: quoted-printable X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 3.0.2 (2004-11-16) on dsa.des.no References: <86ekd1b03q.fsf@xps.des.no> User-Agent: Gnus/5.110002 (No Gnus v0.2) Emacs/21.3 (berkeley-unix) X-Spam-Status: No, score=-2.8 required=5.0 tests=ALL_TRUSTED,AWL autolearn=disabled version=3.0.2 X-Spam-Level: cc: ppc@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Mac mini X-BeenThere: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the PowerPC List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 25 Apr 2005 08:07:31 -0000 Garance A Drosihn writes: > Note that if you are going to do your own buildworlds, then there > are still a few updates to gcc that you will have to apply before > trying to compile freebsd/ppc.
