First, it seemed that every time the system reboots, ntpdate has had to correct the time. And it's often off by minutes -- even if the system had just rebooted and the previous reboot had just corrected the time. And if I do a 'date' immediately after a reboot, it does display the present time. Second, while ntpdate does seem to correct the time just fine, it seems that /usr/sbin/ntpd can't quite keep my Mac at the right time. For instance, in my last reboot it seems the clock drifted about 50 seconds after being up for five hours. Hmm. I just noticed that ntpd is running with '-f /var/db/ntpd.drift' -- but that file does not exist. But then, it doesn't exist on my other freebsd machines, and they all seem to keep accurate time. Still, I'm going to try creating that file and see if it does any good. I find that if I boot into MacOS, and open up the date&time control panel there to force a reset of the time, then the time will be within a quarter-second of the correct time when I then reboot back into FreeBSD. So it seems that MacOS knows to set something in the (firmware|PRAM) that FreeBSD isn't setting? Sorry this isn't as detailed as it might be. I keep meaning to write things like this which "don't seem quite right on PPC", but never find the time to dig into the details... (other examples: - locate doesn't seem to work at all, which I actually have started to look into a bit. - entries in /etc/hosts.allow to deny sshd might not be working right ) -- Garance Alistair Drosehn = gad@gilead.netel.rpi.edu Senior Systems Programmer or gad@freebsd.org Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute or drosih@rpi.edu From owner-freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Jul 19 12:48:22 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 04F8B16A41F for ; Tue, 19 Jul 2005 12:48:22 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from jcoombs@gwi.net) Received: from aphrodite.gwi.net (aphrodite.gwi.net [207.5.128.164]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9318D43D4C for ; Tue, 19 Jul 2005 12:48:21 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from jcoombs@gwi.net) Received: from failure (murdoc.gwi.net [207.5.142.8]) by aphrodite.gwi.net (8.13.1/8.13.1) with SMTP id j6JCmKq2043970 for ; Tue, 19 Jul 2005 08:48:20 -0400 (EDT) (envelope-from jcoombs@gwi.net) Message-ID: <0cbd01c58c60$246dc590$1700a8c0@failure> From: "Joshua Coombs" To: References: Date: Tue, 19 Jul 2005 08:48:19 -0400 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset="iso-8859-1"; reply-type=response Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2900.2527 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2900.2527 Subject: Re: Minor issues of time on PPC X-BeenThere: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the PowerPC List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 19 Jul 2005 12:48:22 -0000 ----- Original Message ----- From: "Garance A Drosihn" To: Sent: Tuesday, July 19, 2005 1:02 AM Subject: Minor issues of time on PPC > I've noticed a few minor issues with tracking the present time > on my Mac-mini. > Hmm. Still, I'm going to try > creating that file and see if it does any good. echo 0 > /var/db/ntpd.drift restart ntpd ntpd can be pissy at times if it only has 1 or 2 external servers to work with. It'll decide that the local system is infact more accurate and start ignoring remote systems, drifting further and further as the system runs. Easiest way to prevent this, have more than 2 servers listed. example /etc/ntp.conf: server 0.pool.ntp.org iburst server 1.pool.ntp.org iburst server 2.pool.ntp.org iburst server 127.127.1.1 fudge 127.127.1.1 stratum 12 driftfile /var/db/ntp.drift This conf pulls 3 servers from the public ntp pool project, and sets up a 'local' refrence clock to fall back to should all three remote servers go down. This is just the local clock after being disciplined by ntp, so it's not accurate, hence the very high stratum forced on it. 'iburst' tells ntp to be aggressive figuring out drift and jitter at startup to get the local clock disciplined quickly. Lastly we define the drift file in the conf so you don't have to specify it on the command line. example /etc/rc.conf settings: ntpdate_enable="YES" ntpdate_flags="-g -q -N high" ntpdate_program="/usr/sbin/ntpd" xntpd_enable="YES" xntpd_flags="-g -p /var/run/ntpd.pid" This sets up a couple things. First, ntpdate is depreciated, so we use ntpd to set the initial time. This takes slightly longer but in addition to setting the time it puts an initial clock rate adjustment into place. Also, '-N high' tells ntpd to use a higher scheduling priority than normal. ntpd doesn't use much cpu, so when it does, I prefer to let it have as much as it needs uninterrupted. Try this, let the machine run for a couple hours, then email the output of: ntpdc -c loopinfo ntpdc -c kerninfo ntpq -p Based on that, we can see if ntp is at fault, or something else is up. > (other examples: > - locate doesn't seem to work at all, which I actually > have started to look into a bit. If someone can identify a G4 with a known working serial console implimentation, I can adapt a standard ATX rack case to hold/power it. I'm assuming firewire/ADC won't be needed which eliminates the need for an external wall wart power supply to bring in 24v? Do the G3 imacs have working serial consoles? Those are cheap and redily available, as are G3 class laptops. No. There are no error message, but it does not work. For instance, a 'locate a' command gives me a list that starts out: /ec /ec /ec /ec ...and I have no file or directory named /ec. I can destroy and rebuild the locate database, and I get the same results. Looking at the algorithm used by the locate programs, it is almost certain that somewhere it is using a 'char' and expecting that to be 'signed char', when on PowerPC it is 'unsigned char'... It is doing a number of clever things with 'char' variables, sometimes explicitly using 'unsigned char', and other times using plain 'char' (and probably assuming those are signed). -- Garance Alistair Drosehn = gad@gilead.netel.rpi.edu Senior Systems Programmer or gad@freebsd.org Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute or drosih@rpi.edu From owner-freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Jul 19 17:18:43 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3469716A41F for ; Tue, 19 Jul 2005 17:18:43 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from jcoombs@gwi.net) Received: from aphrodite.gwi.net (aphrodite.gwi.net [207.5.128.164]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C72B043D4C for ; Tue, 19 Jul 2005 17:18:42 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from jcoombs@gwi.net) Received: from failure (murdoc.gwi.net [207.5.142.8]) by aphrodite.gwi.net (8.13.1/8.13.1) with SMTP id j6JHIfKp080083 for ; Tue, 19 Jul 2005 13:18:41 -0400 (EDT) (envelope-from jcoombs@gwi.net) Message-ID: <0d0901c58c85$e9178960$1700a8c0@failure> From: "Joshua Coombs" To: References: <0cbd01c58c60$246dc590$1700a8c0@failure> Date: Tue, 19 Jul 2005 13:18:41 -0400 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset="iso-8859-1"; reply-type=response Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2900.2527 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2900.2527 Subject: Re: Minor issues of time on PPC X-BeenThere: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the PowerPC List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 19 Jul 2005 17:18:43 -0000 ----- Original Message ----- From: "Garance A Drosihn" > We have two ntp servers on campus, and I'll change my ntp.conf > to use both of them instead of just one. The G5 is a true 64-bit CPU with a 64-bit MMU. 32-bit user-mode code can run unchanged, but the kernel has to deal with the 64-bit MMU and various other bits and pieces that are painful to implement. I have a 1.6G uniprocessor G5, and have mucked around with it a bit - the loader works, for instance - but it might be a while before things start happening. later, Peter. For one, here is ntpd -p from my i386 box (which has been running with only one ntp server), after that box has been running for almost three days: (50) # ntpq -p remote refid st t when poll reach delay offset jitter ============================================================================== *columbia. 128.59.59.177 3 u 134 1024 377 1.965 -0.540 0.133 My two FreeBSD machines are on the same 100-Mbit switch in my office, so I wouldn't expect them to come up with such dramatically different values of offset and jitter when talking to columbia... Also, the value inside /var/db/ntpd.drift does not seem to change, neither on my powerPC machine or my i386 box. (although I just created it on the i386 box, so maybe ntpd hasn't run long enough on that one). I stopped ntpd and started it again, and it didn't seem to do much of anything wrt changing the time. I stopped it again, and started ntpdate instead, and that updated the time correctly. After doing that, I then restarted ntpd again. I ran the queue cmd immediately after restarting ntpd, and it said: (52) # ntpq -p remote refid st t when poll reach delay offset jitter ============================================================================== columbia. 128.59.59.177 3 u 13 64 1 1.321 36.700 0.001 enterprise. 129.6.15.29 2 u 12 64 1 1.178 39.601 0.001 I checked a few other things, and entered the command five or ten minutes later, and it now says: (53) # ntpq -p remote refid st t when poll reach delay offset jitter ============================================================================== columbia. 128.59.59.177 3 u 57 64 3 1.262 216.989 180.289 enterprise. 130.207.244.240 2 u 53 64 3 1.143 228.484 188.883 It seems the offset and jitter are rapidly increasing. Hmm. It might be interesting to try the ntpd client that Matt wrote for Dragonfly, and see how well that works. That's much simpler code, and would probably be good enough for my purposes. Maybe if I have some time this weekend, I'll try that. -- Garance Alistair Drosehn = gad@gilead.netel.rpi.edu Senior Systems Programmer or gad@freebsd.org Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute or drosih@rpi.edu From owner-freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Jul 22 19:54:43 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E0B8B16A422; Fri, 22 Jul 2005 19:54:43 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from setantae@submonkey.net) Received: from shrike.submonkey.net (cpc4-cdif2-3-1-cust199.cdif.cable.ntl.com [82.31.76.199]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 82DA343D55; Fri, 22 Jul 2005 19:54:42 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from setantae@submonkey.net) Received: from setantae by shrike.submonkey.net with local (Exim 4.51 (FreeBSD)) id 1Dw3bV-000Ami-Rc; Fri, 22 Jul 2005 20:54:41 +0100 Date: Fri, 22 Jul 2005 20:54:41 +0100 From: Ceri Davies To: Peter Grehan Message-ID: <20050722195441.GF9649@submonkey.net> Mail-Followup-To: Ceri Davies , Peter Grehan , freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org References: <42CEF70A.2060605@freebsd.org> <20050712172040.GB46490@dragon.NUXI.org> <013401c58709$3172f500$1700a8c0@failure> <20050719145732.GA22045@dragon.NUXI.org> <20050720133521.GF34707@submonkey.net> <42DE5649.2010202@freebsd.org> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha1; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="wTWi5aaYRw9ix9vO" Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <42DE5649.2010202@freebsd.org> X-PGP: finger ceri@FreeBSD.org User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.9i Sender: Ceri Davies Cc: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Subject: Re: refrence machine X-BeenThere: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the PowerPC List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 22 Jul 2005 19:54:44 -0000 --wTWi5aaYRw9ix9vO Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable On Wed, Jul 20, 2005 at 11:48:57PM +1000, Peter Grehan wrote: > >>I've been looking for a G4 Xserve on eBay -- but all I can find now are > >>G5 models. :-( > > > >That's something I was wondering about but couldn't see in a year's > >worth of archives; how SOL are we for FreeBSD on a G5 and what are the > >barriers? >=20 > The G5 is a true 64-bit CPU with a 64-bit MMU. 32-bit user-mode code=20 > can run unchanged, but the kernel has to deal with the 64-bit MMU and=20 > various other bits and pieces that are painful to implement. The loader exercises OpenFirmware a bit and it seems to work OK. > I have a dual G5 PowerMac as of quite recently, and the > second-to-most-recent SNAP booted as far as probing for KDB backends > which was a pleasant surprise. ;) That's the loader working, but the kernel really doesn't get far before bombing out. later, Peter.
