There are some parts of the installation where large amounts of directories with small files are being copied, so the throughput can be quite poor. However, when untarring the base distributions, it shouldn't be too bad: probably in the region of 800KBps. > *the installer treted the sun gem (GMAC) ethernet controller as an > unidetifaid controller and failed to set up networking Known problem, will be fixed in the next 6.0-beta. > *when i booted the installed sysem the system failed to find the system > logger and paniced (couldt find a repport of this anywhare) Did the system end up at the 'mountroot>' prompt on first boot ? If you hit return there it will panic. You have to manually enter the root partition e.g. "ufs:/dev/ad0s7". If this is a different panic, would you be able to get a backtrace by typing 'trace' at the ddb prompt ? later, Peter. Would you be able to boot into single-user mode (boot -s at the loader prompt) and 'ls /dev' when you get to the root prompt ? The syscons ttyv* entries are createc by devfs, so the only reason I could think that they don't show up is that there is no /dev directory on the root filesystem. But, in that case, init bombs out very early because it can't open /dev/console. later, Peter.
