Any objection to throwing the switch to turn mpsafevm on by default on
sparc64? So far my only problems on my ultra60 seem to be that the time
counter stops ticking for some reason that I've yet to determine, but that
there don't seem to be any vm-related issues anymore.

I have no objection. Go ahead. (I was planning to do so myself after
5.4-RELEASE.)

Marius has a patch for that - his previous version solved the problem
for me on multiple machines, and he has an updated (commit-worthy)
version that I have not yet been able to test.

Ooo! Where's it at? I'll gladly test.

Hi there,

Recently installed 5.3-RELEASE on a sun E220R, single CPU, 256MB. The
machine has had nothing done to it, vanilla install and left there for a
few days. It was fine for over a week. Then yesterday,

When i came back minicom told me the output below. These messages are
CPU or OBP problems i believe, or is it a known issue? Could it be bad
memory?

Any advice much appreciated,

Best regards,
ivo.

I am trying to load 5.3-RELEASE from an ISO CD-ROM burned from ftp.freebsd.org
onto a Sun Blade 150 (UltraSparc-IIe class CPU) and having all kinds of problems:

At this point I searched the mailing lists for help and someone suggested to replace
the disk drive. So, I replaced the disk drive (40 GB Western Digital) that came with
the Sun Blade 150 with a brand new 40 GB Western Digital drive and got the same thing.
After more searching I saw someone's post about setting hw.ata.atapi_dma=0 at boot time.
Then I did get a bit farther. After going through the entire install procedure as soon
as it attempted to write to the new drive (to fsck the root partition) I started to see
this:

ad0: FAILURE - WRITE_DMA timed out
ad0: TIMEOUT - READ_DMA retrying (2 retries left) LBA=1
ad0: FAILURE - READ_DMA timed out
ad0: TIMEOUT - READ_DMA retrying (2 retries left) LBA=0

then a screen popped up:

Unable to make new root filesystem on /dev/ad0a!
   Command returned status 36

          [ OK ]
[ Press enter or space ]

I also read somewhere about setting the boot EEPROM back to factory defaults
using the "set-defaults" command -- which I did and which did not seem to help.

One thing I thought strange was the lack of the disk drive
setup choice when I select Custom installation. I have:
"2 Options, 3 Label, 4 etc..." but "1 Partition" is missing.

What is going on here and how do I work around this problem?

Regards,

web...

I shall try to interpret this message:

Trap level (TL) = 1 (userland exception handler):
Trap Type (TT) = 0x63 - implementation_dependent_exception_3 (impl. dep. #35) [1]
- corrected_ECC_error [2]
Trap Program Counter (TPC) = 0x404273f0

Trap level (TL) = 2 (exception in exception handler):
Trap Type (TT) = 0x63 - implementation_dependent_exception_3 (impl. dep. #35) [1]
- corrected_ECC_error [2]
Trap Program Counter (TPC) = 0xc0040f90

Trap level (TL) = 3 (crash):
Trap Type (TT) = 0x10 - illegal_instruction [1]
Trap Program Counter (TPC) = 0xc0040f20

This problem is very similar to another, described in message
<http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/htdig/freebsd-sparc64/2005-March/002901.html>.

IMHO, this is hardware problem.

First, try to clean contacts (or simply reinsert) RAM and CPU modules.

SAFETY WARNING: Always follow ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE DAMAGE prevention
procedures when removing and replacing components.

Gah, I'm cursed.

139         char user[16], pass[16];
204 !pam_ok(pam_get_item(pamh, PAM_USER, (const void
**)&user)) ||

Before I churn the code more :-/, does someone have a much better
suggestion than the attached?
Cheers,

Did you try a serial console? Just unplug the keyboard, and the
entire OBP dialog will move to the first serial port.

This is the correct fix for this.

The correct fix to this is to return to using the stock Sun drive. They
seemed to have tweaked the firmware of the disks they use to work with
the POS ATA controller the Blade 100/150 uses. When my Sun stock drive
died, I went thru pure hell trying to find a disk that would work OK.

Of 5 40GB drives I tried, only an IBM IC35L040AVVN07 worked (has
IC35L040AVVN07-0/VA2OAF0C firmware) works OK (no *_DMA timeouts) at
ATA66.

Damn! This is terrible news.

Thanks for the reply -- I really appreciate it and I can identify
with the "pure hell" part, grrrr.... :-)

I have swapped entire Sun Blades, I have swapped disk drives (twice) and
no joy. :-(

All the Sun Blades we have here have Western Digital 40 GB IDE drives in
them. We only have Western Digital 40 GB IDE as spares, obviously, duh...

I will have to see about getting an IBM IC35L040AVVN07 drive, sigh...

Thanks again. (this is such a pain...)

What model of ATA controller is it?

Did you test the other drives under solaris, or only under FreeBSD?

It might be that other hard drives will work better once the newest
ATA support is committed. I went through all kinds of agony on 5.3
with multiple types of hard drives, on multiple kinds of SATA disk
controllers. That agony included lots of "WRITE_DMA timed out" and
"READ_DMA timed out" messages. And I had plenty of recommendations
that I needed to buy new hard disks. I did do that, and I did switch
SATA controllers (trying three different controllers), but those
changes never really solved the problems, they only changed the nature
of the trouble I was seeing.

Things have been much better for me with the latest ATAng changes in
6.x-current, and we now have the even newer ATAmkIII changes (which I
have not tried yet). Admittedly all of my headaches were in i386, not
sparc64, but it wouldn't surprise me if many of the same issues exist.

According to Garance A Drosihn <drosih@rpi.edu>:

> What model of ATA controller is it?

I don't know and I don't know how to determine this. Would it show
up in the FreeBSD boot log (like dmesg(8) ouput)?

If so, then this booting output is from what I sent in my first message:

   atapci0: <AcerLabs Aladdin UDMA66 controller>

> Did you test the other drives under solaris, or only under FreeBSD?

All our Sun Blades have the 40 GB Western Digital drives and Solaris
on them. I replaced one of these with a brand new, blank, Western
Digital 40 GB drive and had the same disappointing results. :-(

My point is that these Sun Blades work with Solaris. I tried different
Sun Blades (as I said previously) just in case I had picked a bad system...

This is most disheartening news to read, sigh... :-(

I don't much care what flavour of FreeBSD that I run on these uSPARC IIe
boxes, but I'd much prefer to run FreeBSD than OpenBSD or (shudder) Linux.

Only FreeBSD -- this is my FreeBSD Sparc64 machine. I dual boot Solaris
at times, but I wasn't installing Solaris on it until I had a good
FreeBSD installation.

I did also try ATAmkIII{j,k} with the same results.

Hello,

I've just throwed a FreeBSD 5.4-RC CD-ROM into this machine to see
