I am running KDE and using KDM. I'm not sure if this is an X11 issue for a KDM one. I'd like to have a black background instead of the cross pattern. I know this may be a silly and simple question, I'm sorry. I just didn't know where else to ask. . . :-( Thanks for your help, Bryan -- Open Source: by the people, for the people. Kind of both :) It's a question of how KDM starts X. You should have a file /usr/local/share/config/kdm/kdmrc and in there is a command to start X server in (at least here) [X-:*-Core] section which looks here somewhat like this: [X-:*-Core] AllowNullPasswd=true AllowRootLogin=true AllowShutdown=All NoPassEnable=false NoPassUsers= ServerArgsLocal=-nolisten tcp ServerCmd=/usr/X11R6/bin/X Now, running 'X -help' will show you interesting arguments you can specify to X. The one that matters here is -br create root window with black background So you need to put that argument at the end of ServerCmd or ServerArgsLocal line (I only tried ServerCmd one, but it probably shouldn't make a difference). Hm, does this cause any trouble with using fonts or does it only generate larger file? Actually XFree86 4.4 behaves same as Xorg 6.8.2 - they both have mkfontdir as shell wrapper for mkfontscale. This was changed however in XFree86 4.5 - mkfontdir as separate executable was reinstated because of problem with generating encodings.dir - cvs log might be of use: http://cvsweb.xfree86.org/cvsweb/xc/programs/mkfontdir/Imakefile So in case this causes trouble, Xorg should probably do the same (there doesn't seem to be any changes in Xorg mkfontdir in CVS). It should be eventually fixed in Xorg tree, but if this is a problem we can of course patch it in ports for the time being. It is a problem. When the BDF is present it results in the inefficiency of using it instead of the binary-tailored PCF. The worst is, however, when the BDF is not installed at all -- font name will be listed (as in xlsfonts), but the server will refuse to use it... Grabbing mkfontdir.c from XFree86 however works. So here's what you can try: Grab http://www.ijs.si/~lesi/xorg/mkfontdir/mkfontdir.c and http://www.ijs.si/~lesi/xorg/mkfontdir/patch-programs_mkfontdir_Imakefile and put them both under xorg-clients/files directory. Then apply patch http://www.ijs.si/~lesi/xorg/mkfontdir/Makefile.diff to xorg-clients port Makefile and reinstall xorg-clients. After that try reinstalling gemini fonts. Thank you very much, Dejan, for your suggestion. However, I don't need a workaround -- I can come up with them aplenty myself :-) I wanted to make sure, the problem I'm seeing is, indeed, a bug and to solicit suggestions on how to go about fixing it (rather than working around it). And it's not so much a workaround as it is reverting a=20 change that doesn't seem to quite works out. > I wanted to make sure, the problem I'm seeing is, indeed, a bug and to > solicit suggestions on how to go about fixing it (rather than working > around it). Yes, I see no reason to believe that this is anything but bug. > Should I contact XFree86 and Xorg people? Would anyone on freebsd-x11 like > to do that? Well, it's easier of course if someone with better knowledge of the problem= =20 (in this case you :) contacts them as it is then easier to communicate=20 possible solutions. As far as I understood you XFree86 works so this would = be=20 Xorg only bug? As for ports, I was actually wandering if you could confirm that what I've= =20 posted works as expected so it can be eventually committed to ports... While Xinerama works fine for local X11 apps, an app started on a remote machine displaying back to my box fills the fvwm frame with nothing -- except whatever bitmap was already there. Moving the window moves the image of the bitmap around. Killing the app leaves the fvwm frame; I have to "kill" the frame in fvwm to make it go away. If I turn off Xinerama, everything works fine, but obviously I don't have Xinerama. Any suggestions for a good dual-head card which works well with Xorg and Xinerama? I've got two 21" CRTs so don't have DVI input. I don't game so I don't need that kind of speed. I'd prefer something quiet, that doesn't require a fan to prevent it from melting. I'd like to keep it inexpensive. Thanks. You can find release notes here: http://www.xfree86.org/4.5.0/RELNOTES.html ************************************************************************ * General note: * * Please use portupgrade or similar tools to upgrade ports in proper * * order. * * imake should be upgraded first, then XFree86-4-libraries and then * * others. * * Also note that freetype 2.1.9 is needed, so be sure to have * * freetype2 port at latest version in ports. * ************************************************************************ This upgrade brought to you thanks to kris & pointyhat cluster, testers on FreeBSD-X11@ list, a lot of responsive maintainers of other ports that I've managed to mess with along the process... Also included are patches from grehan to make X work on PPC port. Anyhow, Enjoy! A lot of directories that were previously there, but were only used by a few ports (mostly parts of either of X11 distribution) got moved to respective ports plists. Changes to ports were already tested, maintainers have been notified (If I somehow missed someone, it was completely unintentional and I apologise) so I don't expect any problems from this. More about this changes is here: http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-x11/2005-February/001619.html One of notable changes is move of share/pixmaps to mtree, so if you have a new port in works that installs files there under X PREFIX, you don't need to put it in plist as mtree will handle this now. Note that for X_WINDOW_SYSTEM=xorg another mtree is used for now, though plan is to revert to using etc/mtree/BSD.x11-4.dist again at the next upgrade of Xorg ports. Basically, I've got everything working fine and dandy, running Gnome 2.10 and a hostof other client apps. However, when i switch to another computer using my KVM, Xorg immediately begins to monopolize the CPU, heading up to 95% utilization. When i switch back to my machine, my USB keyboard works, but by USB mouse is unfunctioning. I have to force quit Xorg and restart to restore peace to the land. Now, I'm not sure exactly what started this problem, since everything was working before, and i can't remember exactly /when/ it started. I'm running FreeBSD 5.4-STABLE, and xorg-6.8.2 and gnome2-2.10.1 from ports. I get no info in the logs either. I've searched the archives on this, but it's difficult to figure out exactly /what/ to search on to match this problem. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.
