I tested an order the other day to give them another shot. My DVD did come finally as I said last time, but I wanted to test a new order. So I ordered the Linux World pass, which was free and they sent THAT, two nice sized BSD stickers, and two stacks of smaller daemon stickers. Needless to say I was kind of shocked to see all this. They sent me free stickers and I took that as an apology. They really should put their number back on the site too, it makes it seem like tey don't want people calling or something. We think that the BSDMall provides a high quality service as we continue to receive excellent ratings from customers at the store. We are very sorry that the purchase did not work for him. We will send another copy to Gilbert on Monday. People contribute to BSD in many ways. While I have been involved with UNIX since 1980, and was very technical, I have chosen a sales/Marketing path. With that understood, I would not be contributing code, rather service. Before I go further, please let me provide a little back ground. I have been supporting the BSD community for 16 years. More recently, I have been supporting the efforts of the BSDMall. The DaemonNews.com was owner of the BSDMall. They used the profits of the BSDMall to subsidize the DaemonNews magazine and other Daemon News activities. Graphics et al for the magazine is not cheap. They were doing a good job, but 911 happened. All advertising money for the magazine dried up. We helped them by expanding the product line to the VoIP market. This seemed to help for a while, but they were not able to recover from the 911 days. Unfortunately, the DaemonNews.com went bankrupt last year. When they went bankrupt, they owed vendors a lot of money. New management has taken over the BSDMall to do several things: * Continue to serve the BSD community * Pay back the Vendors the money that was owed * Provide additional support to BSD through the sponsorship of new drivers. We hope this will help BSD stay abreast of the current technology. * Continue to be Evangelists of BSD technology: BSDMall will be in Boston at LinuxWorld April 2-7. All of the BSD communities are welcome! When Gilbert's order arrived in early November, the BSDmall was in the midst a transition from the old management location in the Midwest to the new management location on the west coast. The BSDMall was in the process of receiving inventory, subscription list, equipment, graphics, and more. New manufactures and suppliers had to be found and business relationships established. We also had to get the email servers transferred to another host. It took some time to get everything ready for the first shipment. While we had some problems, FreeBSD started shipping during the first week of January and was finished shortly after. The first product was shipped to Gilbert at this time. The BSDmall will charge a card at the time of a shipment. It should be understood that product is shipped FOB Mountain View, CA. Once it has been delivered to the shipper, it is the customers responsibility and liability. While one may not want to hear that, most companies operate that way. We know that the product shipped so it is either the United States Postal Service or the French Postal Service that has stolen or lost the package. I would direct some of the energy being spent towards them. Gilbert, while this was your first order with the BSDMall, we are sorry that it turned out so badly. We have hundreds of customers that have ordered multiple times and are satisfied with the service. We will continuing to take steps that will improve the process and customer satisfaction. However ... > It should be understood that product is shipped FOB Mountain View, > CA. Once it has been delivered to the shipper, it is the customers > responsibility and liability. I don't think this is true. AFAIK, the seller is responsible for delivering the product to the customer, but that the transaction is not complete until the buyer receives the product. The shipper only bears liability if insurance was purchased in most cases. IANAL, but I have done some mail order business. > While one may not want to hear that, > most companies operate that way. Actually, most companies insure their shipments and replace lost orders, at least the ones I deal with. I would never deal with a company which refuses to replace an order lost by the shipper. If I pay for a product and never receive it, it is the responsibility of the seller to deal with the issue. The shipper is not my client, but it is the client of the seller, so the seller takes responsibility for the actions of their client. My credit card company agrees and would be more than willing to do a chargeback if a package I purchased is lost, and the seller refuses to live up to their end of the contract. > We know that the product shipped so > it is either the United States Postal Service or the French Postal > Service that has stolen or lost the package. It took forever but when I tried another order of a free item, I replied the next day to this all again to point out I did not only receive the order, but that some free stickers were thrown in and that it appeared to me that bsdmall was trying to make right what had happened with my order too. > the BSDMall to do several things: > * Continue to serve the BSD community > * Pay back the Vendors the money that was owed > * Provide additional support to BSD through the sponsorship of new > drivers. This may seem high and mighty, but I have a few suggestions: Put the phone number back on the web page so that people can actually call. When a product sells out and you're awaiting stock, update the web site to point out it's back ordered so when someone orders it they know what is going on, I was told this was what happened with my DVD and that they were expecting more by the end of the week. Since Email is easy to spam, maybe a message board would be of use. When a customer has a problem or a question they could ask it there and people who are actually there could then help them out. A drivers CD for various versions of BSD. Like for sound cards Network cards video cards. Cheap to make.... Easy to put together, and would help a lot of people looking for drivers for hardware. BSD Power Paks... Believe me, these would be popular. Free BSD mall sells them but you could order those and make some for NetBSD and Open BSD maybe. Not sure about this one but selling BSD/OS could be a good idea too. > Gilbert, while this was your first order with the BSDMall, we are sorry > that it turned out so badly. We have hundreds of customers that have > ordered multiple times and are satisfied with the service. We will > continuing to take steps that will improve the process and customer > satisfaction. It was mine too. But as I pointed out I decided to give you guys another shot and ordered a free item to see when it would get here and it it happened again, and as I said I made a reply to this the day after it came to point out it had come, and with a lot of free stickers which I thought was a hell of a nice gesture.... May only be stickers, but I loved them. > > Don Witt -Allen From owner-freebsd-advocacy@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Mar 20 08:13:32 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-advocacy@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-advocacy@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 50AEB16A401 for ; Mon, 20 Mar 2006 08:13:32 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from keramida@ceid.upatras.gr) Received: from igloo.linux.gr (igloo.linux.gr [62.1.205.36]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 90B4843D46 for ; Mon, 20 Mar 2006 08:13:28 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from keramida@ceid.upatras.gr) Received: from flame.pc (adsl-66-124-231-46.dsl.snfc21.pacbell.net [66.124.231.46]) (authenticated bits=0) by igloo.linux.gr (8.13.5/8.13.5/Debian-3) with ESMTP id k2K8DCSD015924; Mon, 20 Mar 2006 10:13:15 +0200 Received: by flame.pc (Postfix, from userid 1001) id 8586F50; Mon, 20 Mar 2006 00:12:50 -0800 (PST) Date: Mon, 20 Mar 2006 00:12:50 -0800 From: Giorgos Keramidas To: Joshua Tinnin Message-ID: <20060320081250.GA1310@flame.pc> References: <200603191206.37710.krinklyfig@speakeasy.net> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <200603191206.37710.krinklyfig@speakeasy.net> X-Hellug-MailScanner: Found to be clean X-Hellug-MailScanner-SpamCheck: not spam, SpamAssassin (score=-1.909, required 5, autolearn=not spam, ALL_TRUSTED -1.80, AWL -0.89, BAYES_50 0.00, MANY_EXCLAMATIONS 0.78) X-Hellug-MailScanner-From: keramida@ceid.upatras.gr Cc: freebsd-advocacy@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Petition! I don't have much faith in 'feedback forms' either, unless there is ample evidence that someone is indeed reading and replying to *all* sumbissions. I don't think that commercial companies only account for the amount of effort of the porting though. They have to account for all sorts of other things too, i.e. supporting the released binaries and how much bad things which may happen can cost to the ``fame'' of the company (among other things). Having said that, I hate Flash, because it makes pages very unusable for me most of the time. Some of the pains involve the inability to use a text-based browser for quicky accesses, the inability to select a font size that matches my preference, the inability to copy text from and to flash elements, etc. etc. I still filled the form, because some times it's impossible to access a page AT ALL if Flash is not available. - Giorgos From owner-freebsd-advocacy@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Mar 20 11:06:14 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-advocacy@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-advocacy@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 178B516A401 for ; Mon, 20 Mar 2006 11:06:14 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from sziszi@c2.hu) Received: from c2.hu (mail.c2.hu [193.202.88.6]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 93B3943D5F for ; Mon, 20 Mar 2006 11:06:13 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from sziszi@c2.hu) Envelope-to: freebsd-advocacy@freebsd.org Received: from localhost [127.0.0.1]:58659 (helo=mail.c2.hu) by c2.hu with smtp id 1FLID9-000AZi-U1 for freebsd-advocacy@freebsd.org; Mon, 20 Mar 2006 12:06:08 +0100 Received: from 193.68.33.1 (SquirrelMail authenticated user sziszi@c2.hu) by mail.c2.hu with HTTP; Mon, 20 Mar 2006 12:06:07 +0100 (CET) Message-ID: <2249.193.68.33.1.1142852767.squirrel@mail.c2.hu> In-Reply-To: <20060320081250.GA1310@flame.pc> References: <200603191206.37710.krinklyfig@speakeasy.net> <20060320081250.GA1310@flame.pc> Date: Mon, 20 Mar 2006 12:06:07 +0100 (CET) From: =?iso-8859-2?Q?=C1d=E1m_Szilveszter?= To: freebsd-advocacy@freebsd.org User-Agent: C2Mail / 2.0 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain;charset=iso-8859-2 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit X-Priority: 3 Importance: Normal X-Note: Sending IP is 127.0.0.1 (localhost) Subject: Re: Petition! In addition to the above, I think it would still be of greater benefit to the open source world as a whole if alternative flash player software were created by the community. A similar example is PDF: It would be really bad if all we had today for dealing with PDF were the Adobe reader... but that meant that someone had to sit down and reimplement the standard even though AR for Linux existed at that time already, for example. I know that there used to be alternative open-source flash plugins at one time (supporting version 4.x of flash) but for some reason, not much interest seems to exist to create others. (I know about the in-development GNU project but it is very early development at this time.) Anyone know of anything else? I would love to find an existing alternative. For some reason, begging for closed-source native FreeBSD versions of utilities does not feel right, neither for the user, nor for the manufacturer (just think about it, how many separate versions they would have to maintain just to support all FreeBSD versions in widespread use today? Something like 3-4, unless I am mistaken...) which will likely mean that some versions simply will not be supported at all instead. Just my opinion... I don't want to say too much about this just at the moment, but I will say that extra funding in this area will always allow for things that wouldn't previously have been possible. For example, there may not be enough funding to do the certification for an amd64 binary or a FreeBSD 4 binary. If you or your company were interested in those platforms/versions then extra funding would help there. In addition, certification isn't a one time thing. Every time Sun releases an update, there are relevant fixes and improvements that _should_ mean an updated binary from the Foundation. Funding would help make sure that such updates happen at all, and do so in a timely fashion. There are other ways to help too. E.g., providing some amd64 machines would help in the amd64 example above. -- Greg Lewis Email : glewis@eyesbeyond.com Eyes Beyond Web : http://www.eyesbeyond.com Information Technology FreeBSD : glewis@FreeBSD.org
