I have an issue with an external Dell Powervault array that always reports failure of whatever is in position 0 once the array is active. It will format it, etc. without failure. If I swap the channels on the 320-2X card, the error stays with position 0 on the array. If I drop the channel down to U160 from U320, no errors. This leads me to believe that the backplane of the array box is not up to spec for U320. The funny thing is that and Adaptec 2230SLP card has no issues with the array whatsoever. I've not had problems with LSI cards on risers before. I just purchased a K8SRE board and installed it in a system on March 4th. I didn't try the AMD64 version of FreeBSD, but I was having troubles getting the onboard Broadcom interface working. I was able to get it working by downgrading the bios from 2891_201 to 2891v100.=20 I had been told that disabling ACPI would have worked, but in my case it didn't. It's somewhat annoying to flash the bios, but it may help. After some searching yesterday it appears that the interface _can_ be unstable and cause crashes under heavy load. I haven't had any crashes yet however. -Mark From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Mar 6 05:32:02 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: amd64@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5186416A420; Mon, 6 Mar 2006 05:32:02 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: from smarthost2.sentex.ca (smarthost2.sentex.ca [205.211.164.50]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E144D43D48; Mon, 6 Mar 2006 05:32:01 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: from smtp1.sentex.ca (smtp1.sentex.ca [199.212.134.4]) by smarthost2.sentex.ca (8.13.4/8.13.4) with ESMTP id k265W06E013005; Mon, 6 Mar 2006 00:32:00 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: from freebsd-current.sentex.ca (freebsd-current.sentex.ca [64.7.128.98]) by smtp1.sentex.ca (8.13.4/8.13.4) with ESMTP id k265WML8084726; Mon, 6 Mar 2006 00:32:22 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: by freebsd-current.sentex.ca (Postfix, from userid 666) id 49FF07304D; Mon, 6 Mar 2006 00:32:00 -0500 (EST) Sender: FreeBSD Tinderbox From: FreeBSD Tinderbox To: FreeBSD Tinderbox , , Precedence: bulk Message-Id: <20060306053200.49FF07304D@freebsd-current.sentex.ca> Date: Mon, 6 Mar 2006 00:32:00 -0500 (EST) X-Virus-Scanned: ClamAV version 0.87.1, clamav-milter version 0.87 on clamscanner1 X-Virus-Status: Clean X-Scanned-By: MIMEDefang 2.51 on 205.211.164.50 Cc: Subject: [head tinderbox] failure on amd64/amd64 X-BeenThere: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the AMD64 platform List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 06 Mar 2006 05:32:02 -0000 TB --- 2006-03-06 03:41:49 - We used to have problems with adapters running at 66MHz or more using risercards in a number of Tyan S2707. Those risercards came from Chenbro, along with the cases. By replacing them with Tyan risercards (which became available a few months *after* the boards) those problems vanished. And now comes the interesting part: Months later, problems began to reoccur. In the end we found out that the power supplies were of somewhat low quality. Replacing the power supply helped in every system that was affected. I'll have to mention that to our system builder as something to inverstigate and to watch out for. Nforce4 plus Seagate is said to be okay. http://forums.nvidia.com/lofiversion/index.php?t8171.html I have nforce4-ultra with 4 Seagate 7200.8 SATA drives and have not observed any data corruption. I have have copied many multi-GB files from one disk to another, and afterwards cmp(1) says they are identical. I picked the nforce4-ultra because the other AMD64 chipsets did not have NCQ. I have not had any problems with the nf4 chipset. (But then I don't have any Maxtor or Hitachi disks hooked to it.) On the other hand, I *have* seen data problems with a Maxtor PATA drive on NetBSD/alpha (not a nforce4 chipset, obviously). Read the same sector three times and get three different results. I tried to send this message two days ago but it seems that the gmane.org service had a problem, so here it is again. Apologies if you get this twice. I am looking to build a desktop and I'd like it to run FreeBSD. MSI's K8NGM2-FID seems to be good hardware value for money. It is based on the relatively recent nVidia 6150/430 chipset. Has anyone had experience with this specific board? How well are its features supported in FreeBSD? - video? - audio? - network? - sata raid? - usb? - ide? Here is the data of one of those PSUs: EMACS/zippy Model: P2U-6300P (V) Ser. No.: T33406403 http://www.zippy.com.tw/P_product_detail.asp?lv_rfnbr=2&pp_rfnbr=1074&pcp_rfnbr=2&pp_name=&pcp_name=2U%20Single&pcpw_rfnbr=2&pp_code=P2U-6300P We had a bunch of them replaced with newer versions. I can't tell you from which serial number onwards the problems went away but I was told that all models with "black labelled fan" cause problems and all with "blue labelled fan" work flawlessly. So the latter might be somewhat revision 2 ... Cheers, vt
