These represent problem reports covering all versions including experimental development code and obsolete releases. Bugs can be in one of several states: o - open A problem report has been submitted, no sanity checking performed. a - analyzed The problem is understood and a solution is being sought. f - feedback Further work requires additional information from the originator or the community - possibly confirmation of the effectiveness of a proposed solution. p - patched A patch has been committed, but some issues (MFC and / or confirmation from originator) are still open. r - repocopy The resolution of the problem report is dependent on a repocopy operation within the CVS repository which is awaiting completion. s - suspended The problem is not being worked on, due to lack of information or resources. This is a prime candidate for somebody who is looking for a project to do. If the problem cannot be solved at all, it will be closed, rather than suspended. c - closed A problem report is closed when any changes have been integrated, documented, and tested -- or when fixing the problem is abandoned. I'm sure we can come up with a solution if you (Paul and Duane) really are interested in doing this work. Perforce could be a good solution, especially since our kernel developers actively read p4 diffs and could comment on your progress. Also, submitting your work back to FreeBSD and syncing with the doc repository should be easy if you use p4. The problem with our perforce repository is that it's quite hidden... The Architecture handbook, the Developers handbook, manual pages and the general lack of documentation have been the target for many complaints during the years. It is quite hard to get familiar with our kernel infrastructure, and it's not always obvious who to ask when new questions arise. The general rule though is that the arch@ and hackers@ mailing lists should be your first stop when you need to get in touch with someone that has the right kernel knowledge. The project will loose future developers if the lack of documentation is a too big obstacle, and this will surely hurt the project in the end, but I'm sure we can arrange something or develop a solution if you really are interested in fixing this major PITA. -- Joel From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Sep 13 12:44:50 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: Freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Delivered-To: Freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C822716A407 for ; Wed, 13 Sep 2006 12:44:50 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from paulalexwilson@gmail.com) Received: from wx-out-0506.google.com (wx-out-0506.google.com [66.249.82.238]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A621043D5F for ; Wed, 13 Sep 2006 12:44:47 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from paulalexwilson@gmail.com) Received: by wx-out-0506.google.com with SMTP id i27so2383078wxd for ; Wed, 13 Sep 2006 05:44:46 -0700 (PDT) DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; q=dns; c=nofws; s=beta; d=gmail.com; h=received:message-id:date:from:to:subject:cc:in-reply-to:mime-version:content-type:references; b=k7x59/t/F4dtas4aTYOHjLExlhkGZ5rswfnShv/2N9HWy0klG4Oyh3RtGV1FUByD1x0dHlkEKon0yQGEOdNQfh9qK82W/1QyeqyhL33yEB8uQtr7tafZmCFQyTP4bz60+CqIcDRxcX6rq93aWqjYIuJWYCqCEUf7mhq9Reyfr7s= Received: by 10.70.37.12 with SMTP id k12mr10416242wxk; Wed, 13 Sep 2006 05:44:42 -0700 (PDT) Received: by 10.70.89.11 with HTTP; Wed, 13 Sep 2006 05:44:42 -0700 (PDT) Message-ID: <3c3d11cf0609130544n6c553f25m3f1f526f87c395c6@mail.gmail.com> Date: Wed, 13 Sep 2006 13:44:42 +0100 From: "Paul Wilson" To: "Joel Dahl" In-Reply-To: <1158144023.670.36.camel@localhost> MIME-Version: 1.0 References: <3c3d11cf0609130258s5ebf8274q18acf31a83b403a7@mail.gmail.com> <1158144023.670.36.camel@localhost> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline X-Content-Filtered-By: Mailman/MimeDel 2.1.5 Cc: Freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Subject: Re: man pages and handbooks X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 13 Sep 2006 12:44:50 -0000 On 13/09/06, Joel Dahl wrote: > > I'm sure we can come up with a solution if you (Paul and Duane) really > are interested in doing this work. As someone trying to acquaint himself with the kernel infrastructure, I can attest to this. This is certainly something I would like to be involved in because I feel that the project would be far more attractive if its documentation was well maintained. Besides I think it would be a great way to learn more. The project will loose future developers if the lack of documentation is > a too big obstacle, and this will surely hurt the project in the end, > but I'm sure we can arrange something or develop a solution if you > really are interested in fixing this major PITA. > Absolutely. Speaking for myself, I am interested in working on this. I have an amount of spare time available for the next year that would be well spent on a project like this. I've translated some pages of the documentation to my language (hungarian) just for try. It would be good to have a full documentation for the hungarian people, but I can't see any teams or even tries working on it. If this is the case, could it be possible for me to try to collect some people and let it work on the hungarian project? Of course I could start working on it even if you wouldn't answer but I think it would be easier with the support of the official docproject. As I said before, www/hu is near to a quite complete status, so your work will be still appreciated. I sent you some pieces of docs to translate in my previous mail that you didn't reply. You can check my snapshot here but note that there's some kind of rendering issue if your browser is Javascript-enabled: http://gabor.t-hosting.hu/data/hu/ Note, that it would be worth to have the website translated before working on the actual documentation so that we have a place to put those documents to. Also note, that it would be nice if we worked organized. If more people are working on the same thing individually but don't know about each others that would result in unnecessary work by one of them, that's why I sorry so much that you don't reply to me.
