The first server was running fine for a couple years with 4.x, but then a month or so ago I noticed a bunch of cron-spawned processes stuck in disk wait ('find' commands, for example). Any command I tried that accessed the NFS drives (sync, du, ls, etc) would immediately lock up in the same state. These processes could not be killed without rebooting. Thinking it might be a bad disk, and since we were planning an upgrade anyway, we built a new server. New motherboard/CPU, new boot drive, replaced the data drives with a new RAID system, etc. The new system is an AMD/64, the old one was AMD/i386. The new one is running 6.1 Ran great for about 3 weeks, then the same thing happened. It has nothing in common with the old server as far as hardware goes. Both servers had the same set of clients, which are all FreeBSD 4.11 using TCP. These haven't changed, except they are getting busier al the time. The NFS traffic is on a dedicated switched gigabit network, nice and fast. The problem seems to occur when a file system intensive task is run right on the NFS server itself during heavy NFS usage. Things like using 'find' to delete old files, or using 'du' on a large set of directories, etc. Does this ring any bells for anyone? Are there any known issues with the NFS code that would cause this? Any known solutions? I don't seem to be deadlocked anymore. Commands like ls and such work fine, until I ls the snapshot file itself, which blocked for about 10 minutes before finally completing, and once that command blocked (ufs) other ls -al commands blocked (ufs) on the root (/) directory and subsequent subdirs down to the snapshot. A 'sync' also blocked during this time (blkrd?), but the difference this time is that they all completed. The snapshot completed within about 22 minutes (2Tb filesystem, very little on this one), and commands returned before the snapshot finished at about the 10 minute mark, and subsequent commands (again, ls -al, etc), completed when the snapshot completed. The machine in question is a dual Xeon 2.8GHz with 4Gb of memory, running SMP kernel (pretty much GENERIC), and was about 30% busy (cpu) mostly 'system' and 'io'. The disk being snapshotted was very busy though.. I am using snapshots on that partition. Whenever the system crashes, it comes up very quickly, and launches a background fsck of /data. Since this would take a long time, and I don't want people using the system at a decreased performance, I always kill the background fsck, comment out the filesystem in /etc/fstab, reboot the system, and when it comes up fsck it in the foreground. It always takes 2 hours. Always. So I decide that instead of doing the little boot, kill bg_fsck, comment out, reboot dance, I will just set background_fsck="NO" in rc.conf, and now I will just fsck in the foreground immediately after crashes. But it is not working that way. Now what I see is: - system takes 20-30 minutes to come up - when system does come up, /data is _mounted_ - /data is in fact dirty - if I unmount /data and fsck it, it only takes 15 minutes to fsck So I really don't get it - especially the last two items. Why would the system mount /data dirty if it had no plans to background fsck it ? The only theory I have is this: - the boot takes a lot longer because it is fscking / and /var, NOT in the background, and it has to wait to boot until that is finished. - the foreground fsck of /data always took two hours before, because it was also fsck'ing / and /var at the same time - now that / and /var get fsck'd in the foreground before going multi-user, it only takes 15 minutes to fsck /data Is this ^^^ correct ? I still don't get the logic behind mounting /data dirty though ... is there any way to specify "fsck / and /var. and go multi-user, but don't mount any other partitions unless they are clean" ? Thanks. I still don't get the logic behind mounting /data > dirty though ... is there any way to specify "fsck / and /var. and go > multi-user, but don't mount any other partitions unless they are clean" ? First, this is how I have a system set up with similar characteristics as yours. I have these options in rc.conf: background_fsck="NO" fsck_y_enable="YES" and my fstab looks like: /dev/devicename /mntpoint ufs rw,otheroptions 0 2 So, when my system goes down unclean, and I boot back up, all the filesystems will be fsck'ed, starting with root, then var, then my other mount points, in order of the pass number in the fstab (above, mine is set to 2). You should have root 1, then var 2, and other partitions 3,4, etc probably. If you are using softupdates with UFS2, which presumably you are, then you can do background fsck's, and mount the dirty partition and begin using the filesystem before fsck's start. This works by mounting the filesystem, then 60 seconds later (configurable), beginning a bgfsck. Before the background fsck can start, it must take a snapshot of the filesystem to run against. That alone can take 1-2 hours, depending on filesystem size and how full it is, and how busy it is. Because of that time delay, I prefer to do foreground fsck's. I'm very interested in understanding this technically, but I know it might be a drag to explain it. I suppose I would understand that the processes trying to access the snapshot file itself would block, but once that's blocked, why do processes accessing (stat) the / directory block also? Tools like df complete, so the fsstat is returning with data, which touches the superblock, correct? Then does that mean the root directory inode is locked during the snapshot? If that's true, then maybe putting the snapshot two levels down (/.snap/2006-03/14.snap) would cure that? Thanks! Someone with a commit wand should wave it over fsck(8): If not in preen mode, the remaining entries are checked in order of increasing pass number one at a time. This is needed when interaction with fsck is required. In preen mode, after pass 1 completes, all remaining file systems are checked, in pass number order running one process per disk drive in par- allel for each pass number in increasing order. In other words: In preen mode all pass 1 partitions are checked sequen- tially. Next all pass 2 partitions are checked in parallel, one process per disk drive. While we're on this topic, my fsck's never seem to want to swap, they die with an error (can't recall the error), to get around it I set maxdsiz to a huge number (3gb-ish). Setting maxdsiz any higher makes the machine not boot (can't run init). Of course, our patch gives the conditions for integration of -current OK. For -stable is BAD. We must keep the API compatibility of command/library for integration of -stable. With some technical/specifical reasons, our improved unionfs has a little uncompatibility. For the last time, integration of -stable will be left to the judgment of src committers and others. > Regards, > > Jan Mikkelsen. -- Daichi GOTO, http://people.freebsd.org/~daichi From owner-freebsd-fs@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Mar 16 08:24:46 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-fs@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-fs@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D5FC516A401 for ; Thu, 16 Mar 2006 08:24:46 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from skud@news.com) Received: from c-71-228-197-92.hsd1.tn.comcast.net (c-71-228-197-92.hsd1.tn.comcast.net [71.228.197.92]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 8588043D68 for ; Thu, 16 Mar 2006 08:24:38 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from skud@news.com) Received: from news.com (c10-mail.cnet.com [216.239.116.253]) by c-71-228-197-92.hsd1.tn.comcast.net (Postfix) with ESMTP id C39D97BDAE for ; Thu, 16 Mar 2006 03:22:23 -0500 From: Integraciy_Holdingi To: freebsd-fs Date: Thu, 16 Mar 2006 03:22:23 -0500 Message-ID: <000101c648d2$23f9a849$ffb4ddbc@news.com> Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Priority: 3 (Normal) X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook, Build 10.0.4510 Importance: Normal X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2800.1123 X-AntiVirus: skaner antywirusowy poczty Wirtualnej Polski S. As long as your work doesn't alter or break the behaviour of read-only mounts, I think it's very much ready to go into CVS. From there it can get wider testing and review and be considered for 6-stable. Since read-write support in the existing code is pretty much worthless, I don't think that there will be a problem justifying the operational changes that you describe in your documentation. I'm quietly using the patchset and the stability has never been so good as with those patches. Over the years I have tried to use unionfs to mount /usr/ports and /usr/src over NFS while the objects files stayed local at the client side. I was never able to do a complete build, without a crash. With this patchset I haven't had a single crash, even on SMP systems. Compare the mount options the current implementation and the completely rewritten implementation of unionfs is able to understand. There is a difference. Since it would break a documented interface, we can't MFC it. Except maybe you can prove that the option in question doesn't work at all, and therefore isn't used anywhere. Then we could MFC it, since we wouldn't break something for someone. IMO there's absolutely no barrier to getting this one day merged to 6.x, since unionfs is documented to not work in any FreeBSD release since 2.x or earlier.
