I've reinstalled the primary disk with freebsd 6 stable, erasing all the system partition of 6 beta, and keeping the data disk as-is. (I unplugged it to plug the cdrom drive during installation) I added geon_vinum_load=YES to loader.conf and after rebooting the module was loaded. gvinum list seems to find on my secondary disk the configuration of it. (I didnt "gvinum create" from my conf). The problem is /dev/gvinum and /dev/gvinum/* don't exists. I tried "gvinum create" from the conf it reads (gvinum printconfig) but it fails with something like "can't create, errno 6". which I think is related with the fact that /dev/gvinum* does not exist. What did I miss ? why no /dev/gvinum* ? Thanks in advance. Fred __________________________________________ Yahoo! DSL – Something to write home about. The server is central storage for user files, = mp3, video's, etc. The current machine is running FreeBSD 5.4 with gvinum to gl= ue together 4 disks to one large disk. I have ran out of space and decided to upgrade to FreeBSD 6.0, add some more disks and add some mirroring and get away from gvinum since documentation is lack= ing. Disks to use: (2) 200 gig SATA ( same drives ) (2) 160 gig PATA ( different drives ) (2) 120 gig PATA ( same drives ) (2) 120 gig PATA ( same drives ) Idea would be to mirror the pairs and then concat or stripe the mirrors into a large partition to mount to /usr/home. I believe I can stack the Geom classes correct so this should be possible? A small portion of the first mirror would be used for the o/s partions and would be mirrored as well. I decided to start with a fresh install on the pair of 160 gig drives and try to get the mirroring going first. I believe something went wrong in step 2.2. The output of 2.7 and 2.8 should be the same, correct? I'm not sure where I messed up.. Any help appreciated. Also if I am going about this the wrong way suggestions appreciated. Thanks. The output of 2.7 and 2.8 is different, because those disks aren't really equal in size. This has nothing to do with gmirror. Try: # diskinfo -v /dev/ad[46] and compare number of sectors of each disk. Good luck. --=20 Pawel Jakub Dawidek http://www.wheel.pl pjd@FreeBSD.org http://www.FreeBSD.org FreeBSD committer Am I Evil? Yeah! ** BIG PROBLEM ** However, I need to move the mirrored disks from the test machine to the server and this is causing bootstrap problems. The drives on the test machine are connected to a pci ide card. On the actual server they will be connected to the onboard ide controller. Tried the switch and it gets to the BTX loader but halts real quick. How do I resolve this issue? Is this just on config file issue or something with MBR? Since when done, the machine will be using the onboard ide, two ide pci cards and a serial ide pci card will I be having issues with the drive order getting screwy???
