You should try ktracing hald to see what it's doing. Or recompile it with debugging symbols, then use gdb to break into it and find out where in the code it's looping. The latter would be the most helpful. You said the patch I send to totem will
introduce a memory leak....

When totem finally ends, (the memory is back to the operating system)
as there is no use of IPC  calls....

I use FreeBSD here installed in notebooks used by executives in
large companies, and those notebooks can never crash.

I choose gnome, for the easy of use, and simple interface, the
multimedia part of gnome is very important to those notebooks,
because the users (very important persons...) must watch the videos,
send to them, produce videos using (avidemux + dvdstyler)... and
finally record them using nautilus-cd burner...

By using Openoffice, and evolution, they are connected to the

I'm not saying this bug shouldn't be fixed. What I am saying is let's try and fix the REAL problem. Your patch will most likely not be accepted upstream. We should strive to produce patches that we can push up to the authors. If you follow the debugging instructions at the link I sent you, hopefully the root of this problem can be identified and fixed. I've attached the compressed log file. If you need additional information to help me and/or to fix a problem in the upgrade process I can send that later. The script says it's "bad C++ code" and I don't know much about make/gmake errors, so I don't know exactly how to proceed. As I'm still a novice programmer, I don't think I'd be much help with finding the problem in the code. Is there a way of fixing this issue so I can finish the upgrade? I'm running the x86 version of FreeBSD 6.0-RELEASE on the machine having this problem. In many cases these ports are failing to compile on some subset of the FreeBSD build environments. The most common problem is that recent versions of -CURRENT include gcc3.4, which is much stricter about such things as function declarations, literal strings constants that continue over several physical lines, and forcing the deprecation of antique header files such as varargs.h (we should now be using stdargs.h). The next most common problem is that compiles succeed on the i386 architecture (e.g. the common Intel PC), but fail on one or more of the other architectures due to assumptions about things such as size of various types, byte-alignment issues, and so forth. In occasional cases we see that the same port may have different errors in different build environments. The script that runs on the build cluster uses heuristics to try to 'guess' the error type to help you isolate problems, but it is only a rough guide. If you need help in one or more build environments that you do not have access to, please ask for help on the freebsd-ports mailing list. One more note: on occasion, there are transient build errors seen on the build farm. Unfortunately, there is not yet any way for this algorithm to tell the difference (humans are much, much better at this kind of thing.) The errors are listed below. In the case where the same problem exists on more than one build environment, the URL points to the latest errorlog for that type. (By 'build environment' here we mean 'combination of 4.x/5.x/6.x with target architecture'.) (Note: the dates are included to help you to gauge whether or not the error still applies to the latest version. The program that generates this report is not yet able to determine this automatically.) portname: databases/mergeant broken because: does not build with new libgnomedb build errors: none. overview: http://portsmon.FreeBSD.org/portoverview.py?category=databases&portname=mergeant If these errors are ones that you are already aware of, please accept our apologies and ignore this message. On the other hand, if you no longer wish to maintain this port (or ports), please reply with a message stating that, and accept our thanks for your efforts in the past. Every effort has been made to make sure that these error reports really do correspond to a port that you maintain. However, due to the fact that this is an automated process, it may indeed generate false matches. If one of these errors fits that description, please forward this email to the author of this software, Mark Linimon , so that he can attempt to fix the problem in the future. Thanks for your efforts to help improve FreeBSD. From: Mark Evenson To: bug-followup@FreeBSD.org, mark.evenson@gmx.at Cc: Subject: Re: ports/98377: evolution 2.6.2 has stopped working with Exchange Date: Fri, 29 Dec 2006 09:31:16 +0100 Addendum: As of evolution-2.8.2.1/evolution-exchange-2.8.2, mail with my Microsoft Exchange backend is now working again. No specific cause was ever determined from my side: something serendipitous happened "upstream". Sometimes Evolution gets wedged after improper shutdown (like a crash) giving an erroneous "Lost connection to backend Exchange process" dialog. Assuming you have all your important information in the Exchange account (i.e. nothing locally), the fix I have found to work is to rm -rf $USER/.evolution and $USER/apps/evolution. I have the same problem as before. I installed from 6.2-RC2-i386-disc1.iso the x-user distribution... once this was complete I logged in as non-root user, fired up x, su'd in terminal and installed from /usr/sbin/sysinstall - "6.2-RC2-i386-disc2.iso" the gnome2-2.16.1_2 pkg which in turm automatically checked dependencies. I did not check any other pkg's. installation of gnome completed without any errors. so same "user haldaemon does not exist" after ammending /etc/rc.conf and rebooting. to fix I: cd /usr/ports/sys/hal make deinstall make install and I was greeted with : Added group "haldaemon". Added user "haldaemon". so hal is working fine, for me this seems to be a problem with not creating haldaemon group/user when gnome is installed from /usr/sbin/sysinstall ICQ# 126468680www.icq.com Send instant messages to your online friends http://uk.messenger.yahoo.com
