It looks to me that the low-level serial console works, but that the UART is not found during bus-enumeration so that when you try to get to multi-user (which happens after "Trying root...") there's no device to open. Watch the boot and see if there's an uart marked as console, like: uart3: <16550 or compatible> iomem 0xff5e0000-0xff5e0007 irq 34 on acpi0 uart3: [FAST] uart3: console (115200,n,8,1) -- Marcel Moolenaar USPA: A-39004 marcel@xcllnt.net From owner-freebsd-ia64@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Aug 2 09:24:10 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-ia64@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-ia64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5621816A4DD for ; Wed, 2 Aug 2006 09:24:10 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gerhard.dorner@hob.de) Received: from mailgate.hob.de (mailgate.hob.de [62.91.19.101]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D672243D46 for ; Wed, 2 Aug 2006 09:24:09 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from gerhard.dorner@hob.de) Received: from localhost (localhost.localdomain [127.0.0.1]) by mailgate.hob.de (Postfix) with ESMTP id F1EF51D6B2 for ; Wed, 2 Aug 2006 11:24:07 +0200 (CEST) Received: from mailgate.hob.de ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (mailgate.hob.de [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id 29319-03 for ; Wed, 2 Aug 2006 11:24:07 +0200 (CEST) Received: from imap.hob.de (mail2.hob.de [172.25.1.102]) by mailgate.hob.de (Postfix) with ESMTP id C46AA1D6A0 for ; Wed, 2 Aug 2006 11:24:07 +0200 (CEST) Received: by imap.hob.de (Postfix on SuSE eMail Server 2.0, from userid 30) id E2C4632C1; Wed, 2 Aug 2006 11:24:06 +0200 (CEST) To: freebsd-ia64@freebsd.org Message-ID: <1154510646.44d06f36c10aa@mail2.hob.de> Date: Wed, 02 Aug 2006 11:24:06 +0200 (CEST) From: gerhard.dorner@hob.de MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit User-Agent: IMP/PHP IMAP webmail program 2.2.8 X-Originating-IP: 172.22.20.137 X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-new-20030616-p10 (Debian) at hob.de Subject: FreeBSD on IA64 X-BeenThere: freebsd-ia64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the IA-64 List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 02 Aug 2006 09:24:10 -0000 Hi, I'm trying to install FreeBSD 6.1 on an Itanium64. The syscons console in FreeBSD makes assumptions that are valid on PCs, but are typically not valid on legacy free Itanium machines. These assumptions typically cause a machine check abort...
