Thank you,-PC Totfinn's rules for techno-standards: 1) any new techonological standard will be included in an Open Source project if: a) there is documentation (freely) available b) there is enough interest (ie. widespread use or advantages which isn't in existing standards) c) there are enough developer resources available (one dedicated developer who makes this work a priority is enough for some projects) e) enough time passes If any of the points above fails, the standard will not be included in the Open Source project. There are exceptions, of course. -- Torfinn Ingolfsen, Norway From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Apr 2 09:33:10 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A87FC16A401 for ; Sun, 2 Apr 2006 09:33:10 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from SRS0=eCs5=5Y=FreeBSD.org=se@srs.kundenserver.de) Received: from moutng.kundenserver.de (moutng.kundenserver.de [212.227.126.188]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7EBA243D49 for ; Sun, 2 Apr 2006 09:33:09 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from SRS0=eCs5=5Y=FreeBSD.org=se@srs.kundenserver.de) Received: from [80.135.165.136] (helo=Gatekeeper.FreeBSD.org) by mrelayeu.kundenserver.de (node=mrelayeu7) with ESMTP (Nemesis), id 0ML2Dk-1FPyxD0onz-00018y; Sun, 02 Apr 2006 11:33:03 +0200 Received: from StefanEsser.FreeBSD.org (se [192.168.0.10]) by Gatekeeper.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id ABF5BB814; Sun, 2 Apr 2006 11:33:01 +0200 (CEST) Received: by StefanEsser.FreeBSD.org (Postfix, from userid 200) id 8F86B2301; Sun, 2 Apr 2006 11:32:59 +0200 (CEST) Date: Sun, 2 Apr 2006 11:32:59 +0200 From: Stefan Esser To: Baldur Gislason Message-ID: <20060402093259.GA2006@StefanEsser.FreeBSD.org> Mail-Followup-To: Stefan Esser , Baldur Gislason , Phillip Neumann , freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org References: <20060329154012.GA20678@gremlin.foo.is> <1143723986.1005.0.camel@localhost> <20060330132401.GC20678@gremlin.foo.is> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20060330132401.GC20678@gremlin.foo.is> User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.11 X-Provags-ID: kundenserver.de abuse@kundenserver.de login:fa3fae9b6ca38d745862a668565919f6 Cc: Phillip Neumann , freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Subject: Re: [ Spam - HIGH ] Re: Dell Inspiron 630m X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 02 Apr 2006 09:33:10 -0000 On 2006-03-30 13:24 +0000, Baldur Gislason wrote: > Funny that, I also had this problem on an Inspiron 1000 albeit a bit different there, > on the 1000 the system would not lock up when I ifconfigged the interface up without > a network cable plugged in but it would lock up once the cable was plugged in. You have one extra and one missing item. When attaching to SSID, you should not be specifying a channel. In BSS mode, the card will scan for the desired SSID and associate on that channel. But the man page says that channel is ignored in BSS mode, so this is probably not really your problem. The main problem is that you are not telling the interface which WEP key to use. You need to add "weptxkey 1". Without this statement, the wireless will never associate with a WEP encrypted WAP. My WEP based system is set up as: wepkey 1:0xMY_KEY ssid MYSSID weptxkey 1 wepmode on -- R. Kevin Oberman, Network Engineer Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) Ernest O. Later one, I updated the system using portmanager -u and that installed a new iwi-firmware I guess, because I had to agree to the EULA and since then, when I load the firmware, it gives me continuous messages in the console and dmesg about "unknown notification type 15" I noticed one more thing, with the old firmware, it was located in /usr/local/share/iwi-firmware, but the new one is under /boot/iwi-firmware, it took me a while to figure this out! Any help is appreciated on how I can resolve this matter, is it possible to revert back to the old driver? I don't want to upgrade my system to an "unstable" release. I know FreeBSD is stable but 6.1 is not officially for production use yet! Please correct me if I'm wrong. It's chunkier than toshibas i've been using (tecra A2, Satellite 2300), specially due to the larger battery pack, which protrudes a couple of cm. at the back, but affords over 4 1/2 hours of (normal) work (reported 2 1/2 when building kernel). The specs read 6 1/2 hours (though the highest I've seen it when completely idle after just unplugging it was about 5 hours and something). Specs : http://www-604.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=4611686018425060077&storeId=10000036&langId=036&categoryId=4611686018425008262&dualCurrId=1000089&catalogId=-36 (prices may appear in AUD) Anyway. It's about 3 kg, but that's OK w/me. it's got quite enough grunt for what I need. ACPI works great thus far. Had to disable DRI to be able to suspend from X - will have to test passing the events to devd and making it switch to ttvy0 before suspend with DRI enabled. wireles, NIC, DVD burner, all good (I absolutely hammered the DVD burner, no problems at all). Sound card (Intel high def audio) - tried OSS drivers, but it makes the kernel panic due to irq conflict (I believe that's the reason). I had a problem with the HD ( http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-questions/2006-April/118040.html ) but getting a DOA from IBM was a very reasonable thing, support was very good. I also got an IBM docking station, but I have stopped using it due to certain issues: http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-mobile/2006-March/008125.html Haven't tried yet: - IRDA : gets detected ok. - fingerprint scanner - gets detected as ugen0 (i doubt it'll work, but it would be fun :-) ) - pccard (gets detected ok) - SDcard reader - gets detected too (Ricoh something or other - writing this on my fallback laptop). Why not other brands? - Toshibas seemed to pack more value per $, but I haven't seen any reports of ACPI working ok in them. - DELL - haven't heard anything horrific about them...but nothing extremely encouring either. - HP - i stay away from them. - others : considered going ASUS , sony, fujitsu , pioneercomputers.com.au / others... but i just haven't got the time / will to research each component in advance to find out whether it'd work, etc. And pretty much everyone with a thinkpad in the lists said they were v.happy with them... :) HIH, Beto From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Apr 4 20:22:37 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 63AD016A400 for ; Tue, 4 Apr 2006 20:22:37 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from pconover@ipro.net) Received: from ipro.net (mail.ipro.net [68.216.93.17]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id CD18643D46 for ; Tue, 4 Apr 2006 20:22:36 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from pconover@ipro.net) Received: from 68.216.93.64 with HTTP by webserver ipro.net (68.216.93.17) ; Tue, 4 Apr 2006 16:26:23 EDT Date: Tue, 4 Apr 2006 16:26:23 -0400 Message-Id: <200604041626.AA1479803174@ipro.net> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii From: "P C" To: X-Mailer: Subject: Atheros ad-hoc driver bug status? The right solution is to use bpf to collect 802.11 frames either from the 802.11 layer or from the driver. At the 802.11 layer you get raw frames. At the driver layer you get much more info (rssi, channel, etc.). This is how kismet, ethereal, etc. work. I've had patches to dstumbler for several years to do this: http://www.freebsd.org/~sam/dstumbler.tgz Some cards require that you operate in monitor mode to get interesting information. I do not know wistumbler2 to know if it works like this--but if it does then it can work with any wireless card that is properly integrated into the system. Sam
