However, the mini soon took place as my home theater machine, mainly because it runs MythFrontend well enough. This means that it is "hard" to get it free for FreeBSD use, at any given time. So now I'm thinking about buying a second machine to mess around with FreeBSD. I could just buy another mini, but I see that I can get used G4's for about half the price of a mini here. And yes, budget is always an issue. :-) A couple of examples: http://www.applehistory.norhost.net/g4agp.html with 400 or 450 MHz cpu, 312MB or 640MB RAM or http://www.applehistory.norhost.net/g4_quick_2002.html with 933 MHz cpu and 768 MHz cpu. Would one of these be a good development machine? And, does the G4 make a lot of noise, or is it (nearly) silent? How much RAM do I need? Is 512MB enough, or should it have more? Should I consider other machines instead? Any hints welcome. -- Regards Torfinn Ingolfsen, Norway From owner-freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Feb 14 01:19:43 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BDF7016A420 for ; Tue, 14 Feb 2006 01:19:43 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from jp1660@att.net) Received: from mtiwmhc12.worldnet.att.net (mtiwmhc12.worldnet.att.net [204.127.131.116]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 66DC843D46 for ; Tue, 14 Feb 2006 01:19:43 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from jp1660@att.net) Received: from smellybutt.att.net (c-69-252-198-28.hsd1.nm.comcast.net[69.252.198.28]) by worldnet.att.net (mtiwmhc12) with SMTP id <2006021401194211200mq70se>; Tue, 14 Feb 2006 01:19:42 +0000 Message-Id: <5.2.0.9.0.20060213181519.02efc188@ipostoffice.worldnet.att.net> X-Sender: jp1660@att.net@ipostoffice.worldnet.att.net X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Version 5.2.0.9 Date: Mon, 13 Feb 2006 18:19:22 -0700 To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org From: John Pfersich In-Reply-To: <20060213171425.4f668b11.torfinn.ingolfsen@broadpark.no> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"; format=flowed Subject: Re: "Development" machine - a used Mac?
