Maybe, I'm not so sure. Certainly in terms of throughput, SAS/SATA are relatively close to their SCSI/FCAL counterparts, but I have a number of systems where the throughput is pretty small, but the IO operations/second are (very) high. The SATA drives I've tried in that role have failed miserably compared to their SCSI brethren. -aDe From owner-freebsd-scsi@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jul 17 03:55:41 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-scsi@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-scsi@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9D34E16A4DF; Mon, 17 Jul 2006 03:55:41 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from tom@uniserve.com) Received: from mx5.uniserve.ca (mx5.uniserve.ca [216.113.192.94]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0E53543D55; Mon, 17 Jul 2006 03:55:40 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from tom@uniserve.com) Received: from mgmt.uniserve.ca ([216.113.192.30]) by mx5.uniserve.ca with esmtp (Exim 4.60) (envelope-from ) id 1G2KCq-000CJH-Kz; Sun, 16 Jul 2006 20:55:40 -0700 Date: Sun, 16 Jul 2006 20:55:40 -0700 (PDT) From: Tom Samplonius X-X-Sender: tom@mgmt.uniserve.ca To: Ade Lovett In-Reply-To: <6BF5AB95-9A4D-4ABD-9717-6623F274CFCD@freebsd.org> Message-ID: <20060716205031.K27056@mgmt.uniserve.ca> References: <813466C3-8E34-4886-9689-044086F4F64C@dragondata.com> <7376DAAA-4C67-495F-A532-5A86C47E8F75@FreeBSD.org> <7579f7fb0607140806q1cf1baf4q24a6f2ec14118a54@mail.gmail.com> <3B9652BC-027D-4FC5-A2E9-3CD7AF12DC4B@freebsd.org> <7579f7fb0607161131h19a995ffjeceda64feb4d7a7a@mail.gmail.com> <6BF5AB95-9A4D-4ABD-9717-6623F274CFCD@freebsd.org> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed X-Scanner: OK. I think SAS will replace U320 quite quickly. I noticed that HP is moving many servers to 2.5in SAS drives. I know IBM would like to do the same, but there are supply shortages on 2.5in SAS drives. And there aren't any 15K 2.5in disks yet (that I know of). SAS and 2.5in make a lot of sense for enterprise use. Storage density has increased a lot, so the extra density can be used to put more spindles in less space. Why use a 3.5in 10K 146GB disk, when you can use a 2.5in 10K 146GB disk? Imagine the space savings alone. > -aDe Tom From owner-freebsd-scsi@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jul 17 11:03:09 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-scsi@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-scsi@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1EB9116A55E for ; Mon, 17 Jul 2006 11:03:09 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A388643D45 for ; Mon, 17 Jul 2006 11:03:08 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (peter@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4) with ESMTP id k6HB38AZ071663 for ; Mon, 17 Jul 2006 11:03:08 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Received: (from peter@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4/Submit) id k6HB36tH071659 for freebsd-scsi@freebsd.org; Mon, 17 Jul 2006 11:03:06 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Date: Mon, 17 Jul 2006 11:03:06 GMT Message-Id: <200607171103.k6HB36tH071659@freefall.freebsd.org> X-Authentication-Warning: freefall.freebsd.org: peter set sender to owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org using -f From: FreeBSD bugmaster To: freebsd-scsi@FreeBSD.org Cc: Subject: Current problem reports assigned to you X-BeenThere: freebsd-scsi@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: SCSI subsystem List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 17 Jul 2006 11:03:09 -0000 Current FreeBSD problem reports Critical problems Serious problems S Submitted Tracker Resp. After a huge amount of going backwards, and forwards, and backwards again - and getting to the point of almost throwing the unit out of the proverbial window - this now appears to be working. Using HP SmartRAID 6i firmware v2.68a, with the MSA running firmware 1.52A - our HP DL380 and MSA20 now appear to work ok. This is the first combination of firmware versions that has offered any semblance of reliability. The units can now pass all the drive tests done to it (concentrating on failing / replacing drives). We can now fail multiple drives in the DL380 - and drives in the MSA20, and the system will rebuild them flawlessly one at a time when they're replaced (even while under I/O load). The previous SmartRAID 6i firmware (2.58) coupled with the 'latest' msa20 firmware (1.52A) failed randomly (just as every other previous one did). So, fingers crossed... Just thought I'd send this in, to in hopes of having someone else avoid the hell we've just been through. -Karl From owner-freebsd-scsi@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jul 17 16:30:37 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-scsi@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-scsi@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 761F616A4E6 for ; Mon, 17 Jul 2006 16:30:37 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from matthias.andree@gmx.de) Received: from mail.gmx.net (mail.gmx.de [213.165.64.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id A99DD43D6D for ; Mon, 17 Jul 2006 16:30:25 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from matthias.andree@gmx.de) Received: (qmail invoked by alias); 17 Jul 2006 16:30:24 -0000 Received: from p509119BF.dip0.t-ipconnect.de (EHLO m2a2.dyndns.org) [80.145.25.191] by mail.gmx.net (mp040) with SMTP; 17 Jul 2006 18:30:24 +0200 X-Authenticated: #428038 Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by merlin.emma.line.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BE5F7200F27; Mon, 17 Jul 2006 18:30:22 +0200 (CEST) Received: from m2a2.dyndns.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (m2a2.dyndns.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id 09932-20; Mon, 17 Jul 2006 18:30:22 +0200 (CEST) Received: by merlin.emma.line.org (Postfix, from userid 500) id 9318A200F92; Mon, 17 Jul 2006 18:30:22 +0200 (CEST) From: Matthias Andree To: Tom Samplonius In-Reply-To: <20060716205031.K27056@mgmt.uniserve.ca> (Tom Samplonius's message of "Sun, 16 Jul 2006 20:55:40 -0700 (PDT)") References: <813466C3-8E34-4886-9689-044086F4F64C@dragondata.com> <7376DAAA-4C67-495F-A532-5A86C47E8F75@FreeBSD.org> <7579f7fb0607140806q1cf1baf4q24a6f2ec14118a54@mail.gmail.com> <3B9652BC-027D-4FC5-A2E9-3CD7AF12DC4B@freebsd.org> <7579f7fb0607161131h19a995ffjeceda64feb4d7a7a@mail.gmail.com> <6BF5AB95-9A4D-4ABD-9717-6623F274CFCD@freebsd.org> <20060716205031.K27056@mgmt.uniserve.ca> X-PGP-Key: http://home.pages.de/~mandree/keys/GPGKEY.asc Date: Mon, 17 Jul 2006 18:30:22 +0200 Message-ID: User-Agent: Gnus/5.110006 (No Gnus v0.6) Emacs/21.3 (gnu/linux) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii X-Virus-Scanned: amavisd-new at emma.line.org X-Y-GMX-Trusted: 0 Cc: freebsd-scsi@freebsd.org, Ade Lovett Subject: Re: Current favorite FC HBA? Imagine the space savings alone. Not to mention many 15000/min drives have been using smaller disks than their 10000/min counterparts anyways. -- Matthias Andree From owner-freebsd-scsi@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Jul 18 21:03:16 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-scsi@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-scsi@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id F400B16A4DA for ; Tue, 18 Jul 2006 21:03:15 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from fbettag@qs-housing.net) Received: from mx1.qs-housing.net (tec.qs-housing.net [80.83.176.5]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9BBBB43D6E for ; Tue, 18 Jul 2006 21:03:15 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from fbettag@qs-housing.net) Received: from [83.171.191.23] (helo=[172.16.1.5]) by mx1.qs-housing.net with esmtpsa (TLSv1:AES256-SHA:256) (Evil-Packet) id 1G2wio-0002gd-9b for freebsd-scsi@freebsd.org; Tue, 18 Jul 2006 23:03:14 +0200 Message-ID: <44BD4CFB.5050003@qs-housing.net> Date: Tue, 18 Jul 2006 23:04:59 +0200 From: "Franz Bettag [QS Housing]" Organization: QS Housing User-Agent: Thunderbird 1.5.0.4 (Windows/20060516) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-scsi@freebsd.org Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit X-MIME-Character-set: ISO-8859-1 Subject: Will there be a driver for Adaptec 1420SA? Any ideas if i only have to add a revision to some driver or does it really need a "special" driver?
