From: Jonathan Fosburgh To: bug-followup@freebsd.org, jonathan@fosburgh.org Cc: Subject: Re: usb/77604: Sluggish Logitch LX700 USB Mouse Date: Sat, 31 Dec 2005 22:14:27 -0600 Looks like hid.c has been updated. These patches will now probably have to be reworked at least somewhat. I can try to fix uhid.c.patch since I have systems running RELENG_6 and HEAD, but I no longer have RELENG_5, so someone else will have to fix that. Of course, someone could actually look at commiting these patches. They fix several different (cordless) USB mice and so far as I know, don't break anything that works without it (I have a fairly plain Logitech USB optical mouse that works with or without the patch. -- Jonathan Fosburgh From owner-freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Jan 1 23:20:04 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-usb@hub.freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-usb@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 89B2D16A41F for ; Sun, 1 Jan 2006 23:20:04 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 97F4543D60 for ; Sun, 1 Jan 2006 23:20:03 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4) with ESMTP id k01NK3mi098100 for ; Sun, 1 Jan 2006 23:20:03 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4/Submit) id k01NK3Qe098099; Sun, 1 Jan 2006 23:20:03 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Resent-Date: Sun, 1 Jan 2006 23:20:03 GMT Resent-Message-Id: <200601012320.k01NK3Qe098099@freefall.freebsd.org> Resent-From: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org (GNATS Filer) Resent-To: freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.org Resent-Reply-To: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org, Fernando Schapachnik Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D6F7816A41F for ; Sun, 1 Jan 2006 23:18:33 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from fpscha@schapachnik.com.ar) Received: from servidor1.cursosvirtuales.com.ar (www.cursosvirtuales.com.ar [200.59.46.198]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 828AA43D60 for ; Sun, 1 Jan 2006 23:18:31 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from fpscha@schapachnik.com.ar) Received: from servidor1.cursosvirtuales.com.ar (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by servidor1.cursosvirtuales.com.ar (8.12.11/8.12.11) with ESMTP id k01NIO2T078665 for ; Sun, 1 Jan 2006 20:18:25 -0300 (ART) (envelope-from fpscha@schapachnik.com.ar) Received: from schapachnik.com.ar (uucp@localhost) by servidor1.cursosvirtuales.com.ar (8.12.11/8.12.11/Submit) with UUCP id k01NIO3W078664 for FreeBSD-gnats-submit@freebsd.org; Sun, 1 Jan 2006 20:18:24 -0300 (ART) (envelope-from fpscha@schapachnik.com.ar) Received: from funes.schapachnik.com.ar (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by funes.schapachnik.com.ar (8.13.4/8.13.4) with ESMTP id k01NIKmP000971 for ; Sun, 1 Jan 2006 20:18:20 -0300 (ART) (envelope-from fpscha@funes.schapachnik.com.ar) Received: (from fpscha@localhost) by funes.schapachnik.com.ar (8.13.4/8.13.4/Submit) id k01NIK24000970; Sun, 1 Jan 2006 20:18:20 -0300 (ART) (envelope-from fpscha) Message-Id: <200601012318.k01NIK24000970@funes.schapachnik.com.ar> Date: Sun, 1 Jan 2006 20:18:20 -0300 (ART) From: Fernando Schapachnik To: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org X-Send-Pr-Version: 3.113 Cc: Subject: usb/91191: HP LaserJet 1020 (USB printer) not recognized X-BeenThere: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: Fernando Schapachnik List-Id: FreeBSD support for USB List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 01 Jan 2006 23:20:04 -0000 >Number: 91191 >Category: usb >Synopsis: HP LaserJet 1020 (USB printer) not recognized >Confidential: no >Severity: non-critical >Priority: medium >Responsible: freebsd-usb >State: open >Quarter: >Keywords: >Date-Required: >Class: sw-bug >Submitter-Id: current-users >Arrival-Date: Sun Jan 01 23:20:02 GMT 2006 >Closed-Date: >Last-Modified: >Originator: Fernando Schapachnik >Release: FreeBSD 6.0-STABLE amd64 >Organization: >Environment: System: FreeBSD funes.schapachnik.com.ar 6.0-STABLE FreeBSD 6.0-STABLE #24: Sun Jan 1 16:02:16 ART 2006 root@funes.schapachnik.com.ar:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/FUNES2 amd64 FreeBSD 6.0 stable (cvsuped today, Jan 1st. 2006). dmesg|fgrep -i usb ohci0: mem 0xfebf4000-0xfebf4fff irq 20 at device 3.0 on pci0 usb0: OHCI version 1.0, legacy support usb0: on ohci0 usb0: USB revision 1.0 ohci1: mem 0xfebf5000-0xfebf5fff irq 21 at device 3.1 on pci0 usb1: OHCI version 1.0, legacy support usb1: on ohci1 usb1: USB revision 1.0 ohci2: mem 0xfebf6000-0xfebf6fff irq 22 at device 3.2 on pci0 usb2: OHCI version 1.0, legacy support usb2: on ohci2 usb2: USB revision 1.0 ehci0: mem 0xfebf7000-0xfebf7fff irq 23 at device 3.3 on pci0 usb3: EHCI version 1.0 usb3: companion controllers, 3 ports each: usb0 usb1 usb2 usb3: on ehci0 usb3: USB revision 2.0 Kernel is generic without PREEMPTION. make.conf: CPUTYPE=athlon64 Motherboard: Asus K8S-MX (AMD 64) CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 2800+ (1804.07-MHz K8-class CPU) Origin = "AuthenticAMD" Id = 0xf4a Stepping = 10 Features=0x78bfbff AMD Features=0xe0500800 >Description: The HP LaserJet 1020 USB printer is not recognized. I have a problem with a Logitec USB Hard Disk drive (LHD-EB250U2S) that appears identical to the problems concerning iPods detailed in PRs usb/81774 and usb/86438. It was a bit of a hard task tracking down the issue, involving a move to NetBSD 2.1, which also failed, then NetBSD 3.0, which worked, then back to FreeBSD 6.0, where I downloaded the files related to PR usb/81774 and/or usb/86438 (file names and versions listed below), added a USB Quirk, and then compiled a custom kernel. The cause of the problem with my Logitec HDD is apparently the usbd_clear_endpoint_stall() function call in usbd_setup_pipe() in the file /src/sys/dev/usb/usb_subr.c. To fix this problem I -- based on what I worked out from the changes to the USB package between NetBSD 2.1 and 3.0 -- downloaded the following files through FreeBSD's web CVS interface:- usb_subr.c v1.78 usb_quirks.h v1.19 usb_quirks.c v1.43 usbdevs v1.236 I then added a USB quirk for my Logitec drive. The diff outputs to usbdevs and usb_quirks.c are given below under "Fix to the problem". Since I figure that some other users might also benefit from the quirk, I have (hopefully not wrongly) lodged a PR to capture the addition. One difficulty is that Logitec (not Logitech, with a h) sells a range of disk drives here in Japan, all of which might potentially have the same issue. My series alone has 80GB, 160GB and 300GB versions in addition to the 250GB that I bought. It is not clear to me whether the device numbers are all different... I am guessing so though. The drives are detailed (in Japanese) on the following page: http://www.logitec.co.jp/products/hd_lhd.html It might be worth noting that according to Logitec's drivers' download page (given below) the following devices all have the same Windows and Mac driver: LHD-EB300U2S , LHD-EB250U2S , LHD-EB160U2S , LHD-EB80U2S , LHD-EB300U2 , LHD-EB250U2 , LHD-EB160U2 , LHD-EB120U2 , LHD-EB80U2 Ref: http://www.logitec.co.jp/down/soft/hd/lhdebu2.html (Note that to the best of my knowledge the final S on the first 4 units does not indicate a hardware difference but merely a promotional campaign where the purchaser is entitled to download a software title for free.) This would lend (some) weight to the idea that they are all subject to the same issue with usbd_clear_endpoint_stall(). As an alternative to adding quirks I note that in NetBSD 3.0 they have deleted the function call usbd_clear_endpoint_stall() altogether. If this is not a violation of the USB spec, then perhaps this would be a possible solution for FreeBSD as well? If not, some kind of trace statement alerting users to the function call's failure might make it easier for them to detect the problem and thence add their own appropriate quirk. Cheers, Jarrod. >How-To-Repeat: Plug in a Logitec USB Hard Disk (model LHD-EB250U2S in this case) and check your dmesg. The hard disk initialization does not complete properly and you are not able to mount it. (Presumably the same issue reported in PRs usb/81774 and usb/86438 on iPods.) >Fix: The patches I have applied are given below (taken from a diff -u and then cleaned up a bit ;) ): --- usbdevs.1.236 Mon Jan 2 11:56:06 2006 +++ usbdevs Mon Jan 2 13:53:43 2006 @@ -1,5 +1,4 @@ -$FreeBSD: /repoman/r/ncvs/src/sys/dev/usb/usbdevs,v 1.236 2005/12/05 01:51:28 flz Exp $ +$FreeBSD: src/sys/dev/usb/usbdevs,v 1.236 2005/12/05 01:51:28 flz Exp $ /* $NetBSD: usbdevs,v 1.392 2004/12/29 08:38:44 imp Exp $ */ /*- @@ -1117,6 +1116,7 @@ /* Logitec Corp. products */ product LOGITEC LDR_H443SU2 0x0033 DVD Multi-plus unit LDR-H443SU2 product LOGITEC LDR_H443U2 0x00b3 DVD Multi-plus unit LDR-H443U2 +product LOGITEC LHD_EB250U2S 0x00d2 LHD USB Hard disk LHD-EB250U2S /* Lucent products */ product LUCENT EVALKIT 0x1001 USS-720 evaluation kit --- usb_quirks.c.1.43 Tue Jan 3 13:02:22 2006 +++ usb_quirks.c Tue Jan 3 13:04:44 2006 @@ -38,8 +38,7 @@ */ #include -__FBSDID("$FreeBSD: /repoman/r/ncvs/src/sys/dev/usb/usb_quirks.c,v 1.43 2005/12/11 20:14:38 flz Exp $"); +__FBSDID("$FreeBSD: src/sys/dev/usb/usb_quirks.c,v 1.43 2005/12/11 20:14:38 flz Exp $"); #include #include @@ -82,6 +81,8 @@ 0x100, { UQ_AU_INP_ASYNC }}, { USB_VENDOR_APPLE, USB_PRODUCT_APPLE_IPOD3G, ANY, { UQ_NO_OPEN_CLEARSTALL }}, { USB_VENDOR_APPLE, USB_PRODUCT_APPLE_IPODVIDEO, ANY, { UQ_NO_OPEN_CLEARSTALL }}, + { USB_VENDOR_LOGITEC, USB_PRODUCT_LOGITEC_LHD_EB250U2S, + ANY, { UQ_NO_OPEN_CLEARSTALL }}, /* XXX These should have a revision number, but I don't know what they are. */ { USB_VENDOR_HP, USB_PRODUCT_HP_895C, ANY, { UQ_BROKEN_BIDIR }}, >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Jan 3 17:32:40 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0EC0B16A420 for ; Tue, 3 Jan 2006 17:32:40 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from vd@datamax.bg) Received: from jengal.datamax.bg (jengal.datamax.bg [82.103.104.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6B25943D5C for ; Tue, 3 Jan 2006 17:32:39 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from vd@datamax.bg) Received: from qlovarnika.bg.datamax (qlovarnika.bg.datamax [192.168.10.2]) by jengal.datamax.bg (Postfix) with SMTP id 53584B832; Tue, 3 Jan 2006 19:32:33 +0200 (EET) Received: (nullmailer pid 945 invoked by uid 1002); Tue, 03 Jan 2006 17:32:33 -0000 Date: Tue, 3 Jan 2006 19:32:33 +0200 From: Vasil Dimov To: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org Message-ID: <20060103173233.GA833@qlovarnika.bg.datamax> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline X-OS: FreeBSD 6.0-STABLE User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.11 Subject: how to force ucom driver to create /dev/cuaU? for some device? The issue is that they seem to not signal the USB infrastructure that they have been ejected, and thus the operating system doesn't know. In fact, most "x in 1" card readers --- ones that read many types of memory --- actually attach a bunch of disks with zero blocks in addition to attaching the memory card you have inserted --- as if they have the capability of simutaneously handling all different kinds of memory (although they often don't). So this seems like an acceptable solution. Until now. Now that I have a Dell 2405 flat panel display on my desk (gorgeous, BTW), I have a permanently attached cluster of memory card slots. Sure ... I can grope around behind things, find the usb cord for the monitor, but that's very ungraceful and ends up unplugging any other USB devices that go through the monitor (thus causing all kinds of trouble). So I set about tonight to see if I could convince camcontrol to realize that one of the previously full disks was now empty again. It doesn't seem that I can. Maybe what we need is 'usbcontrol' ... allowing us to reset (or at least reset the OSs idea of) one usb device.
