Perhaps there is more than people can help pjd with here, but they need to contact him first. We need to decide if this item should still be on the TODO list. Note that jb's work on dtrace is a significant work-in-progress so to contact him. Does this need to be a todo item? Note that the "use floating point in kernel rah rah rah" item requires experimental validation -- the task isn't to hack code, but to decide if the hacked code was a good idea. Does this need to be a todo item? Note that the DFBSD process checkpointing facility is both experimental and incomplete. Another "Don't just port this" sort of thing. Do we want this to be a todo item? In the Linuxulator update task, note that Roman is doing this. Do we need this todo item anymore? Add fine-grained locking to syscons task. Some of the items in this idea are silly. Note that the PXE HTTP idea requires someone to implement TCP in pxeboot, add networking experience on the requirements list. Add gnn to the TCP/IP regression suite idea, as he's working on such a thing. Make it clear in the distributed audit daemon task that portable C coding is required. Is this a "Google SoC projects list" or a "FreeBSD projects list"? IMO just because something is not an appropriate SoC project doesn't mean it's not suitable for someone more advanced to take on. The FPU subsystem overhaul port has already been done by Attilio and is available as patches, I believe, and basically requires evaluation at this point. That evaluation might be an appropriate project for someone to work on (although not for SoC). I don't mind seeing process checkpointing on an overall project idea list, but I think we should replace the text there with something substantially more informative. There's a significant research literature on how you do these sorts of things and I'm not sure we want to ask people to hack it up without figuring out what it is we actually want out of such a project. Otherwise, patches for something we don't want will turn up and leave disappointment all around. In particular, there are countless reasons why simply implementing "checkpointing" of processes in isolation is relatively meaningless, and if required, probably best done with involvement of the application rather than transparently in the OS. In a clustered/distributed system, checkpointing provided by the OS is a far more meaningful concept. If we're serious about wanting checkpointing, let's have a session at the developer summit at BSDCan on what it is we want and why, have a couple of people read into the research literature here, and re-add a checkpointing project once we have something a bit more directed to put up. It may be worse than that even. PXE provides native UDP support in the BIOS and pxeboot uses that. I do think there is a way to send and receive raw packets rather than UDP, but now you are talking about implementing not just TCP, but IP, arp, etc. If you booted a kernel with an mfsroot that used an init program that talked to an HTTP server that might be a different matter. -- John Baldwin From owner-cvs-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Feb 17 10:52:22 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: cvs-doc@FreeBSD.org Delivered-To: cvs-doc@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6362416A401; Sat, 17 Feb 2007 10:52:22 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from joel@FreeBSD.org) Received: from repoman.freebsd.org (repoman.freebsd.org [69.147.83.41]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3A66413C4AA; Sat, 17 Feb 2007 10:52:22 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from joel@FreeBSD.org) Received: from repoman.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by repoman.freebsd.org (8.13.6/8.13.6) with ESMTP id l1HAqMcw098537; Sat, 17 Feb 2007 10:52:22 GMT (envelope-from joel@repoman.freebsd.org) Received: (from joel@localhost) by repoman.freebsd.org (8.13.6/8.13.4/Submit) id l1HAqMIc098536; Sat, 17 Feb 2007 10:52:22 GMT (envelope-from joel) Message-Id: <200702171052.l1HAqMIc098536@repoman.freebsd.org> From: Joel Dahl Date: Sat, 17 Feb 2007 10:52:22 +0000 (UTC) To: doc-committers@FreeBSD.org, cvs-doc@FreeBSD.org, cvs-all@FreeBSD.org X-FreeBSD-CVS-Branch: HEAD Cc: Subject: cvs commit: www/en/projects/ideas index.sgml X-BeenThere: cvs-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: CVS commit messages for the doc and www trees List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 17 Feb 2007 10:52:22 -0000 joel 2007-02-17 10:52:21 UTC FreeBSD doc repository Modified files: en/projects/ideas index.sgml Log: 802.11f has been withdrawn by the IEEE, so the IAPP project seems to be of limited value right now. It's nearly committed it seems. So my suggestion was to strip it down =20 to a "zombie" (only the title, the person doing the work and a "nearly =20 committed/done" comment) until it is committed. I don't mind that it =20 is removed. Please add it back. We are happy for every helping hand we can get =20 (the wiki lists enough stuff). There may be even work for the SoC, but =20 it needs to be a _very_ strong proposal to get a green light from us =20 people which work in this area. BTW, I followed up with Pawel on this one to ask about whether there were any obvious project tasks to be done on ZFS, and the answer was no. A general point: in a a few weeks, we're going to have hundreds of students looking at the ideas page looking for concrete project ideas to propose for summer of code. We should avoid putting things on the ideas page if we don't want them done. We should make it clear for each item that we think is worth exploring but aren't sure will be committed that this is the case. This will avoid unhappiness later when we say "Yeah, it was on the ideas list, but really, we don't want that". I'm fine with having high level categories of ideas with contacts, rather than having every idea there be specific and concrete, but let's be very careful not to ask for things we don't want. Maybe it would be best if we would flag SoC compatible tasks as such and=20 leave the rest as is. I'm fine with having high level categories of ideas with > contacts, rather than having every idea there be specific and concrete, > but let's be very careful not to ask for things we don't want. My experience with the ideas list so far is, that specific and =20 concrete items are more likely to get picked up than high level stuff. =20 An item will be picked up more likely, the smaller the concrete item is. This (small and very detailed) is not something we want for the SoC, =20 but this is the FreeBSD ideas list and not the SoC ideas list. If you =20 think something is not appropriate for the SoC, mark it up as such. If =20 you think an idea should vanish completely, remove it with an =20 approriate commit log or start a discussion about it the removal may =20 be controversal. Personally I'm not emotionally attached to any entry, =20 and I think the same is true for Joel. Related thought: maybe we will =20 need a list of stuff we will not do ever for stuff which is removed =20 from the list but gets suggested again. I think an alternative explanaation is that people have looked at them and been left sufficiently worried by the experience as to wonder whether "magic symlinks" are really a good idea. I think we should take it off the list before we get yet another set of patches that won't be accepted for the same reason. I have mixed feelings about "zombie" entries since we've reached the point where most entries would be zombie entries. How about we have a separate page on projects that are currently in progress? People go to the ideas page, one presumes, to find things to work on, so we should only list things that are new ideas to be worked on. Robert N M Watson Computer Laboratory University of Cambridge
