Hi all, I see that chinsan's commit generated some confusion and sparked a discussion about the overall goals of this chapter. Fist of all it wasn't me who submitted this new paragraph but I was asked by chinsan to write something on bpkg(8), because he wanted to include information about bpkg(8) in the Handbook. As Marc politely remarked the only "semi-official" tool is portupgrade(1) and I fully agree with him it should be the only one fully documented in the Handbook. I don't see any reason to include an additional nearly identical manual for portmanager (with all due respect to its creator). But at the same time I agree with Doug here when he says about the idea of creating a list of actively maintained ports management applications with a description of each. Letting the community know the alternatives is a good thing IMHO. Chinsan, Doug - will you be working on this? I am willing to offer my help if needed. FreeBSD FAQ article 6.7 http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/faq/commercial.html#COMMERCIAL-WEBBROWSERS says that Opera is commercial web browser. But Opera is free. Commersial means "not open source"? Than it`s "closed source code" but non commercial. _________________ Bondarenko Andrey From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jul 23 00:45:48 2007 Return-Path: Delivered-To: doc@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9469416A417 for ; Mon, 23 Jul 2007 00:45:48 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from linimon@lonesome.com) Received: from mail.soaustin.net (mail.soaustin.net [207.200.4.66]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7723713C45E for ; Mon, 23 Jul 2007 00:45:48 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from linimon@lonesome.com) Received: by mail.soaustin.net (Postfix, from userid 502) id 8FD20B09; Sun, 22 Jul 2007 19:24:34 -0500 (CDT) Date: Sun, 22 Jul 2007 19:24:34 -0500 To: anb@fxclub.org Message-ID: <20070723002434.GC10294@soaustin.net> References: <2541.83.167.96.232.1185139131.squirrel@mail.fxclub.org> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <2541.83.167.96.232.1185139131.squirrel@mail.fxclub.org> User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.9i From: linimon@lonesome.com (Mark Linimon) Cc: doc@FreeBSD.org Subject: Re: FreeBSD FAQ 6.7 question X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 23 Jul 2007 00:45:48 -0000 On Mon, Jul 23, 2007 at 01:18:51AM +0400, anb@fxclub.org wrote: > says that Opera is commercial web browser. > But Opera is free. These represent problem reports covering all versions including experimental development code and obsolete releases. Bugs can be in one of several states: o - open A problem report has been submitted, no sanity checking performed. a - analyzed The problem is understood and a solution is being sought. f - feedback Further work requires additional information from the originator or the community - possibly confirmation of the effectiveness of a proposed solution. p - patched A patch has been committed, but some issues (MFC and / or confirmation from originator) are still open. r - repocopy The resolution of the problem report is dependent on a repocopy operation within the CVS repository which is awaiting completion. s - suspended The problem is not being worked on, due to lack of information or resources. This is a prime candidate for somebody who is looking for a project to do. If the problem cannot be solved at all, it will be closed, rather than suspended. c - closed A problem report is closed when any changes have been integrated, documented, and tested -- or when fixing the problem is abandoned. The handbook information about portupgrade could move there; as well, wherever the scattered information about cvsup vs. cvsup could move there. Finally, there is some information under "keeping up" in the Porter's Handbook that really doesn't belong there (at least, if you have the theory that the PH's audience is committers and maintainers). Another chapter could be the hints on how to maintain a "package server" that is used to build and distribute packages within an organization. I know that a lot of installations do something like this already. Finally, some comments about release vs. -stable should be added. In the past I've been asked if I could do a talk about these issues, and have had to honestly admit that I don't know enough to do so. IMHO there enough demand for something like that. Personally I think maneging ports is such an integral part of running a FreeBSD system that it should be in the Handbook itself. It should perhaps be reorganized and if there is enough chapters simply make it a separate part. Moving it out in to an article will make it harder to find for average users IMO. The ports+packages system is very much part of the daily care and feeding. If this amounts to moving the description of how to install ports and maintain them on a running system out of the Handbook, I think it's not a very wise move. -- Peter N. M. Adding, removing, upgrading applications is one of the most important managing task for the normal user. I would even add this task is maybe the only one a normal user will use to perform on a frequent basis, once the system has been installed. So, it's difficult to imagine the Handbook without a chapter about these operations. But this normal user doesn't need to become a ports system expert, he just need to know simple/general methods to install, remove and upgrade his applications. I think at least one tool should be documented in the Handbook so the common user will be able to get by just reading the Handbook. I don't have a problem at with more advanced stuff or other more uncommon tools being moved out of the Handbook. Note that the Porters Handbook is for port maintainers / developers / committers so this information for users really doesn't belong there, as Mark already has pointed out. In any case, as usual, the person / people who decide to actually do some cleanup in the area will get to decide what to do, and I doubt that will be me. -- Simon L. If this amounts to moving the > description of how to install ports and maintain them on a running > system out of the Handbook, I think it's not a very wise move. I don't think anyone is suggesting that, I certainly am not. What I'm saying is that including mini-manuals for all the various ports management tools in the handbook is a bad idea. I think the problem is where do we draw the line. You mentioned two issues, how to install ports (which I don't think there is any dispute about) and how to maintain them. If your idea of describing "how to maintain them" means detailed descriptions of the operations of "how to maintain them" with each of the tools available, then we disagree. I don't think that scales, and I think it bloats the handbook with a lot of repetitive information. When I say "how to maintain them" I think we should describe in general terms that there are various tools that can be used to do this job, here is a little information about them, and here is where you can find more detailed information. If the consensus is that we should have the more detailed descriptions in the handbook, I won't oppose that, I'll just ask that we extend that courtesy to each of the management tools that are in the ports collection. It would be nice if a few more people spoke up on this issue though, so far the opinions have been limited to a few vocal folks. BTW, it would be tempting to think that I'm whinging about this as the author of portmaster, but I'm not. I don't even have a portmaster section in there now, and I wasn't planning to add one. I just want to make sure that however we resolve this it's in the best interest of our users. It's been a while since I took a serious look at the non-firewalls parts of the handbook, but if a brush-up of the ports sections is needed, to me it sounds like we are not really that far apart. In fact it sounds like an interesting writing project which I might take a stab at once I'm done with the one I'm doing now. The time frame would be some time after Copenhagen (EuroBSDCon). > When I say "how to maintain them" I think we should describe in > general terms that there are various tools that can be used to do this > job, here is a little information about them, and here is where you > can find more detailed information. Possible options include: 1. Initially add notes in section 27.7 where the current description does not apply to Apache 2, detailing the differences. Then at some later point, when Apache 2 becomes the preferred version, this approach can be reversed, so the main description deals with Apache 2, with notes detailing the differences with Apache 1.3. 2. Have a separate page describing Apache 2.x (less preferred IMHO). A first step would be to indicate that Apache 2.1 and 2.2 are available from ports. Currently, section 27.7 indicates Apache can be installed from either www/apache13 or from www/apache20. However, there are various alternative options: $ ls /usr/ports/www | grep ^apache apache-contrib apache-forrest apache-jserv apache-mode.el apache13 apache13+ipv6 apache13-modperl apache13-modssl apache13-modssl+ipv6 apache13-ssl apache20 apache21 apache22 I would suggest at least apache22 to be mentioned, possibly even instead of apache20, since according to the Apache project, 2.2.x is preferred over 2.0.x: http://httpd.apache.org/download.cgi >How-To-Repeat: >Fix: >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Jul 26 07:20:01 2007 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D65E116A418 for ; Thu, 26 Jul 2007 07:20:01 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9F74813C45E for ; Thu, 26 Jul 2007 07:20:01 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.1/8.14.1) with ESMTP id l6Q7K1us067691 for ; Thu, 26 Jul 2007 07:20:01 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.1/8.14.1/Submit) id l6Q7K1Ps067690; Thu, 26 Jul 2007 07:20:01 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Resent-Date: Thu, 26 Jul 2007 07:20:01 GMT Resent-Message-Id: <200707260720.l6Q7K1Ps067690@freefall.freebsd.org> Resent-From: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org (GNATS Filer) Resent-To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org Resent-Reply-To: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org, David Yeske Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4AF8916A41B for ; Thu, 26 Jul 2007 07:13:02 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from nobody@FreeBSD.org) Received: from www.freebsd.org (www.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::21]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3B3AD13C468 for ; Thu, 26 Jul 2007 07:13:02 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from nobody@FreeBSD.org) Received: from www.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by www.freebsd.org (8.14.1/8.14.1) with ESMTP id l6Q7D2WJ051780 for ; Thu, 26 Jul 2007 07:13:02 GMT (envelope-from nobody@www.freebsd.org) Received: (from nobody@localhost) by www.freebsd.org (8.14.1/8.14.1/Submit) id l6Q7D2Yl051779; Thu, 26 Jul 2007 07:13:02 GMT (envelope-from nobody) Message-Id: <200707260713.l6Q7D2Yl051779@www.freebsd.org> Date: Thu, 26 Jul 2007 07:13:02 GMT From: David Yeske To: freebsd-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org X-Send-Pr-Version: www-3.0 Cc: Subject: docs/114925: update handbook to list method for preventing console reboot X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 26 Jul 2007 07:20:01 -0000 >Number: 114925 >Category: docs >Synopsis: update handbook to list method for preventing console reboot >Confidential: no >Severity: non-critical >Priority: low >Responsible: freebsd-doc >State: open >Quarter: >Keywords: >Date-Required: >Class: doc-bug >Submitter-Id: current-users >Arrival-Date: Thu Jul 26 07:20:01 GMT 2007 >Closed-Date: >Last-Modified: >Originator: David Yeske >Release: HEAD >Organization: >Environment: FreeBSD speed 7.0-CURRENT FreeBSD 7.0-CURRENT #1: Wed Jul 18 23:40:39 EDT 2007 root@speed:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/SPEED amd64 >Description: add sysctl to the handbook to prevent a reboot via control alt delete from the console >How-To-Repeat: >Fix: see attachment Patch attached with submission follows: Index: book.sgml =================================================================== RCS file: /home/ncvs/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/faq/book.sgml,v retrieving revision 1.802 diff -u -r1.802 book.sgml --- book.sgml 17 Jul 2007 18:04:02 -0000 1.802 +++ book.sgml 26 Jul 2007 07:06:15 -0000 @@ -6315,6 +6315,12 @@ options SC_DISABLE_REBOOT + This can also be done by setting the following sysctl + which does not require a reboot or kernel + recompile. + + &prompt.root; sysctl -w hw.syscons.kbd_reboot=0 + in the configuration file. The inetd.conf line in the handbook is: swat stream tcp nowait/400 root /usr/local/sbin/swat and the line from the actual inetd.conf is: swat stream tcp nowait/400 root /usr/local/sbin/swat swat When I took the line from the handbook and put in my inetd.conf it didn't work because of the missing 'swat' keyword. The swat manpage also confirms this: From SWAT(8): swat stream tcp nowait.400 root /usr/local/samba/sbin/swat swat So I guess it should be corrected in the handbook. Thank you all for your work on this great piece of documentation.
