However, I've switched computers and I want to reinstall this computer with FreeBSD 7.0 beta without gmirror. However, after reinstalling and rebooting with a kernel that contains GEOM_MIRROR, I find that it is still finding the old gmirror labels and can't find the real root partition. How do I go about removing the gmirror label without dd'ing /dev/zero over both complete drives? Do you mean it mounts root from the mirror? You'll need to modify fstab (and maybe loader.conf) if you want to switch from a mirrored volume to single drives. --------------enig0AEAC4B49B3622144DE6F91B Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name="signature.asc" Content-Description: OpenPGP digital signature Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="signature.asc" -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.5 (MingW32) Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQFHScxZldnAQVacBcgRAid2AKCRuvHVdWWOFFw14w5d8fzW8OP1OwCg93aC RRqIbfJY0j4WywSuNq790ZA= =GZw+ -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --------------enig0AEAC4B49B3622144DE6F91B-- From owner-freebsd-geom@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Nov 26 03:09:39 2007 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-geom@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 021C016A4FB; Mon, 26 Nov 2007 03:09:39 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from dokas@oitsec.umn.edu) Received: from mta-w2.tc.umn.edu (mta-w2.tc.umn.edu [134.84.119.6]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B194B13C448; Mon, 26 Nov 2007 03:09:38 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from dokas@oitsec.umn.edu) Received: from cdward.oitsec.umn.edu (mrtoad.oitsec.umn.edu [128.101.238.97]) by mta-w2.tc.umn.edu (UMN smtpd) with ESMTP Sun, 25 Nov 2007 20:54:25 -0600 (CST) X-Umn-Remote-Mta: [N] mrtoad.oitsec.umn.edu [128.101.238.97] #+HF+LO+TS+AU Message-ID: <474A355B.6020005@oitsec.umn.edu> Date: Sun, 25 Nov 2007 20:54:19 -0600 From: Paul Dokas Organization: OIT Security & Assurance, University of Minnesota User-Agent: Thunderbird 2.0.0.6 (X11/20071031) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Ivan Voras References: <4749A6B4.1070205@oitsec.umn.edu> In-Reply-To: X-Enigmail-Version: 0.95.5 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Cc: freebsd-geom@freebsd.org Subject: Re: undoing gmirror X-BeenThere: freebsd-geom@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: dokas@oitsec.umn.edu List-Id: GEOM-specific discussions and implementations List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 26 Nov 2007 03:09:39 -0000 Ivan Voras wrote: > Paul Dokas wrote: >> I've got a computer that was running FreeBSD 6.2 on two 250GB drives that >> were configured as a gmirror pair. Ahhh! I tried gmirror clear, but only while the mirror was active. I'll do it without the GEOM_MIRROR loaded. >> can't find the real root partition. > > Do you mean it mounts root from the mirror? The machine was essentially useless at that point. And, to make matters worse, while trying to get the machine working again, I booted from the 7.0beta CD, entered "fixit" and then enabled gmirror by hand. This had the miserable effect of discovering the old gmirror'd drives and then resyncing them while using the secondary drive as the master... I'll be reinstalling it again tomorrow.
