Sorry to crosspost. Also, I am not currently subscribed to these two lists, so please CC me. ... I have just installed two 500G SATA discs from Seagate, model ST3500641AS in an ASUS M2N-E motherboard (nVidia MCP55 chipset). Since this is a home desktop and I need dual boot, I used nVidia's RAID technology to create the array, while still using the previous disks for booting. Well, the suggested device to control these disks, IIRC, is ataraid, so I went for it. But its performance was incredibly slow. I had less than half a megabyte per second in a raw transfer (dd). Formating 100G UFS2 partitions take more than a minute. And all this was drivers fault, as far as I could notice from "systat -v" output. The array was operating near 100% capacity. While running newfs, and this I remember for sure, the array was performing at 4 (four!) transfers per second, and near 100% load. I also noticed that ataraid does not integrate with GEOM. Shouldn't it be by now? Just to be sure it was no defect in disks, they worked perfectly in Windows XP. So my solution was to build a whole disk RAID1 device using gmirror, but now I have two independent and non-interoperational RAID technologies. Indeed, I am very luck that nVidia's RAID does not use the same sector as gmirror for metadata, or if they use, that it does not clash. After using gmirror, now I have the RAID in its full performance, getting over 60Mbytes per second at raw reads, very near the 70MBps from the specs. Could only be better if we already had NCQ working. Now the question: Is this expected? Is ataraid somehow deprecated? If that matters, this has been done on the last week's RELENG_6 source build. The CPU is an AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+, with 3G RAM. The main advantage of ataraid is its integration with BIOS and other operating systems. If we had something like a master GEOM device which could read ata raid specs and build GEOM graphs based on this information, that would be a good workaround. I am not sure if this is enough, but at least would solve startup problems. I am also not sure if it is even possible, because no single GEOM device would suffice: The master device should recognize disk labels, and call geom_mirror, geom_strip, geom_raid5, etc when needed. I hope GEOM architects have something in mind, because this is very important to desktop and dual boot. I can deal with geom_mirror, but I am not a typical user. Most users don't even know FreeBSD supports mirroring, since it is not on installation options menu. Indeed, install a FreeBSD with boot mirror support was still a complex task the last time I saw sysinstall. Thanks for your info, anyway... I can see your point, although I don't understand geom enough to comment on everything you say. I just wonder though, are there many users that need to dual-boot a mirror? I have only used gmirror on servers, but then I am Mac user on the desktop, so any other OS's I need I will virtualise. > I can deal with geom_mirror, but I am not a typical user. It's not that hard, you just escape to the shell on the initial sysinstall, and add the second provider after you reboot. It's definitely beyond a "typical user", but then like I say, I don't know any "typical users" who want RAID-1. I do agree though, that a way to configure this in sysinstall would be very nice. Looking at ata-chipset.c I don't see any entries for this chipset (id is 0x612111ab). I am hoping that it is similar to the Marvell 88SX6101 such that support could easily be added. Anybody have any luck getting this chipset to work? I've emailed a few people on the list who have given me useful comments, some of which I am still following up. But I wanted to send a general cry for help to see if there are more knowledge out there about this problem. FreeBSD 6.2 on PowerEdge 1950, RAID1 setup with mfi driver (PERC5i). 4GB RAM. I am currently running i386, and not amd64, due to various reasons. I've ran exhaustively memory tests, disk tests, and network tests and cannot produce the kernel panic. I worked with Dell support to run memory test 1 DIMM at a time and cannot find any problem. With 1 DIMM at a time, I could still get the kernel panic under my work load. My work load is heavily hitting a web site running on the machine and requiring the web service to do MySQL requests. On the side, I am running a bunch of scripts that mostly read from the MySQL database but also write to it occasionally. Not memory intensive -- still have usually about 1GB free memory, but fairly disk intensive. I don't get disk errors. Anywhere from between 10 minutes to 4 or 5 hours into the test, I get the kernel panic. Again, still no disk errors. I turned off soft-update, still happens. Kernel panic is at 0xC066C731, which from nm shows it's in mtx_lock_spin c066c7b4 T _mtx_lock_spin c066c85c T _mtx_unlock_sleep So this could mean that independent stress tests will not result in panic if there aren't enough concurrency to cause the problem. There are a few other complaints about kernel panics at the same IP on the web (google 0xc066c731)... I was wondering if anyone had dealt with this before and if there are any work arounds? Thanks, Benjie
