Since I understand that this card does not really provide the RAID itself (and also does not seem as table as preferred on FreeBSD) I am wondering/considering obtaining a RAID card that does and possibly disabling the SiI 314 on the motherboard. However, the question is can that be done without having to reinstall? (I seem to recall that I can not just move SCSI drives from one interface to an interface of an other brand). Thanks! Definitely a good idea to go with hardware RAID. Although, for RAID1, you could probably get away with using gmirror on those drives connected to the SiI controller. > However, the question is can that be done without having to reinstall? > (I seem to recall that I can not just move SCSI drives from one > interface to an interface of an other brand). Yes you can. Just swap the drivers, then boot off an install CD and select the Fixit option. That way, you can check the dmesg output to see if/how the drives are named. Then you just mount the / partition and edit the /etc/fstab file with the new names. -- Freddie Cash fcash@ocis.net From owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Jan 16 23:05:07 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: FreeBSD-ISP@FreeBSD.ORG Delivered-To: FreeBSD-ISP@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 91B9916A412 for ; Tue, 16 Jan 2007 23:05:07 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from sos@deepcore.dk) Received: from spider.deepcore.dk (cpe.atm2-0-53484.0x50a6c9a6.abnxx9.customer.tele.dk [80.166.201.166]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1F4F313C43E for ; Tue, 16 Jan 2007 23:05:06 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from sos@deepcore.dk) Received: from [194.192.25.137] (ws.deepcore.dk [194.192.25.137]) by spider.deepcore.dk (8.13.8/8.13.8) with ESMTP id l0GN4bV2074262; Wed, 17 Jan 2007 00:04:38 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from sos@deepcore.dk) Message-ID: <45AD5A05.8060703@deepcore.dk> Date: Wed, 17 Jan 2007 00:04:37 +0100 From: =?ISO-8859-1?Q?S=F8ren_Schmidt?= User-Agent: Thunderbird 1.5.0.9 (Macintosh/20061207) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Jan Knepper References: <45AD4128.4080903@digitaldaemon.com> In-Reply-To: <45AD4128.4080903@digitaldaemon.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Cc: FreeBSD ISP Subject: Re: SATA Raid Controlller replacement card... Except for eventual drive renumbering caused by the possible different PCI bus location and depending on whether static devices numbering is used or not, you can move drives around (S)ATA controllers all you like. However if you have a softraid defined on the disks, that depends on the controller BIOS to be maintained at the boot level. -Søren From owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Jan 16 23:11:31 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: FreeBSD-ISP@FreeBSD.ORG Delivered-To: FreeBSD-ISP@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 55E1916A40F for ; Tue, 16 Jan 2007 23:11:31 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from jan@digitaldaemon.com) Received: from digitaldaemon.com (digitaldaemon.com [63.105.9.34]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 26C4113C442 for ; Tue, 16 Jan 2007 23:11:29 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from jan@digitaldaemon.com) Received: (qmail 48880 invoked by uid 98); 16 Jan 2007 23:11:21 -0000 Received: from 63.105.9.34 by digitaldaemon.com (envelope-from , uid 89) with qmail-scanner-1.25 (clamdscan: 0.87/1195. The 7000-series uses the twe(4) driver=20 and is support in FreeBSD 5+, and the 9000/9500-series uses the twa(4)=20 driver, with support in FreeBSD 6+. The 3dm2 web management tool is=20 among the best I've seen so far. Areca cards are also very good. Don't know anything about lower-end, non-server RAID controllers, though. = =20 At home I just use PCI-based IDE controllers and gmirror. :) =2D-=20 =46reddie Cash fcash@ocis.net From owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Jan 18 10:38:11 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8057B16A58C for ; Thu, 18 Jan 2007 10:38:11 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from rama@co.zahav.net.il) Received: from mx.co.zahav.net.il (mx.co.zahav.net.il [192.114.85.73]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 972F413C44C for ; Thu, 18 Jan 2007 10:38:10 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from rama@co.zahav.net.il) Received: from igfe.InetGold (unknown [172.33.1.137]) by mx.co.zahav.net.il (Postfix) with ESMTP id AF8802C3499 for ; Thu, 18 Jan 2007 12:19:44 +0200 (IST) Received: from IGMAIL.InetGold ([172.31.100.164]) by igfe.InetGold with Microsoft SMTPSVC(6.0.3790.1830); Thu, 18 Jan 2007 12:19:43 +0200 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft Exchange V6.5.7226.0 Content-class: urn:content-classes:message MIME-Version: 1.0 Date: Thu, 18 Jan 2007 12:19:40 +0200 Message-ID: <6F2DB4B43B9EAD4FA4659FA701F45ADB0635F851@IGMAIL.InetGold> X-MS-Has-Attach: X-MS-TNEF-Correlator: Thread-Topic: panic on 6.2-RELEASE Thread-Index: Acc66inH8G9N3MrkRWGlExaEAuOJkQ== From: "Ram Akuka" To: X-OriginalArrivalTime: 18 Jan 2007 10:19:43.0071 (UTC) FILETIME=[2B8C1EF0:01C73AEA] Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Content-Filtered-By: Mailman/MimeDel 2.1.5 Subject: panic on 6.2-RELEASE X-BeenThere: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Internet Services Providers List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 18 Jan 2007 10:38:11 -0000 Hi ,=20 I have a server that acting as a mail router - mean a lot of messages to deal with .
