I'm hoping somebody on this list may be able to help. I have 2 servers running isc-dhcp3-server and syslog-ng. I have configured dhcpd to run in a chroot. The following (reproducible) sequence of events cause dhcpd logging to break: 1) Start syslog-ng 2) Start isc-dhcpd (At this point, logging is working fine) 3) `pkill -HUP syslog-ng` (This happens on the hour whenever logfiles need rotating, but can also be effected manually) 4) dhcpd logging is now broken 5) Restart isc-dhcpd (logging works again) My theory (and it's only a theory) is that when isc-dhcpd starts, it=20 gets an fd to the syslog socket. When syslog-ng receives a HUP, that=20 socket is reopened and isc-dhcpd's fd is now broken. Relevant options from rc.conf: | syslogd_enable=3D"NO" | newsyslog_enable=3D"NO" | syslog_ng_enable=3D"YES" | dhcpd_enable=3D"YES" | dhcpd_flags=3D"-q" | dhcpd_conf=3D"/usr/local/etc/dhcpd.conf" | dhcpd_includedir=3D"/usr/local/etc/dhcpd.d" | dhcpd_withumask=3D"022" | dhcpd_chuser_enable=3D"YES" | dhcpd_withuser=3D"dhcpd" | dhcpd_withgroup=3D"dhcpd" | dhcpd_devfs_enable=3D"YES" | dhcpd_rootdir=3D"/var/jails/dhcpd" | dhcpd_chroot_enable=3D"YES" | dhcpd_ifaces=3D"bge0" Note that if I enable the dhcpd_jail options (to use a FreeBSD jail in addition to the chroot and unprivileged user), I still experience the same symptoms. My workaround: For the hosts in question, I've added to the logrotate postrotate script: `/usr/local/etc/rc.d/isc-dhcpd restart > /dev/null` This workaround makes me a little uncomfortable, because these instances of dhcpd are critical for thousands of end users. Is this a bug? Is there a better workaround? Logging from all other applications on the system is unaffected by the HUP to syslog-ng, including two jailed instances of bind9 (syslog-ng on the host opens up the socket /var/run/log inside those jails).=20 Any insight would be greatly appreciated. It shouldn't be a major deal, but it does seem to be. I'm looking to replace an ASUS AP1600R-S5. I just want something that has the same sort of setup (Dual Xeons, 4G mem in enough chips I can remove 1/2 if there a memory issue suspected, 4 small size hot swap drives), CD/floppy INTERNAL this time, I need a SCSI on a different port/channel/etc externally for a RAID, and a redundant power supply would be really nice. Trying to get companies to contact me back and get numbers that make sense is really problematic. Am I asking for too much? Or too little? Or too old (SCSI). We've recently bought 3 HP Proliant servers that we've been most happy with, and are just in the process of checking out Dell as a possible change as I've heard good things about their servers, while being cheaper ... Well, I have contacted 6 of the people on the list so far. I guess I'll have to expand the search. I did look at Supermicro, and I think the closest I might get is the 6013P-8+ ... No redundant power but I'll live. Am I stupid to hold out for plain old Xeon? Am I being too "old school" trying to stay with SCSI? One thing I run into is that I want 2 different SCSI controllers/channels. One needs to run 4 internal drives in either RAID-10 or RAID-5, and another (PCI card) has to run an external RAID box via plain old SCSI. The other issue is I run into people who are just order takers, and trying to get a tech is close to impossible. As you can see, I'm incredibly frustrated. I'm a server down right now, all I want is someone to say "Sure, thats not a problem, it'll ship tonite" and when I get it its what I need and won't have any glitches running FreeBSD 5.X Thanks, Tuc > > You're contacting wrong people, I never had an issue like the one you > describe. At this point, it doesn't make sense to get old 6013P8+ SCSI is still way to go if you need high IO You can't go wrong with 15k SCSI Go to pricewatch.com, find cheapest supermicro resellers and call them. Don't ask them FreeBSD questions. Tell them which server you want, if they have it in stock and can overnight, that's all there is to it. Only FreeBSD specific vendors can answer FreeBSD compatibility questions, hope you realize this. All supermicro servers will run FreeBSD just fine. Quality equal to the big names like Dell and HP, but much cheaper, and experience with the BSDs. (they'll even preinstall it for you.) If you go with someone like Dell or HP you'll get comparable hardware at a cheaper price but you won't get any help from them whatsoever in trying to figure out if their hardware is completely compatable, and yes, I've run FBSD with good and bad results on various dell boxes over the years. -- Thanks, Josh Paetzel
