This period has come to an end, and it is now time that we remove the support for these ports in bsd.java.mk before we delete the JDK ports themselves. However, some ports are defining JAVA_VERSION as 1.1 or 1.2 and they should be fixed before we move on. If you are receiving this message, it is either because you are subscribed to the freebsd-java mailing list or because you are the maintainer of at least one of the forecited ports. In both cases, you may want to have a look at the following PR: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=ports/116724 The PR will stay open for 2 weeks while you may all send PRs to fix the ports or review the bsd.java.mk patch in case I did something wrong. Although the patch contains changes for the ports using Java 1.1 or 1.2, I did not test them all. I just replaced "1.1+" and "1.2+" by "1.3+". In two weeks, we will start testing the patch on the cluster. I just noticed that java/jdk11 is scheduled for removal, so sorry for the late comment. I would like to add one use case for this port: compiling code that will run on the version of Java shipped with every vanilla Microsoft OS since Windows 98 (aka. "the Microsoft Virtual Machine"). Its been a number of years (2003) since I needed this (getting an Java SSH applet that will work in any cybercafe on the planet). but java/jdk11 was really the only environment where I had a chance of producing code that seemed to work reliably. Maybe I never will need to do this kind of work again, but I just wanted to mention how this port could potentially be useful outside of internal FreeBSD ports dependencies. -- <Mark.Evenson@gmx.at> "[T]his is not a disentanglement from, but a progressive knotting into." Unless someone else comes forward saying they are using jdk11 today, I don't see a statement of "this was useful for me 4 years ago" as being a reason to keep an ancient version of Java around today :). Even if someone did, I'd point out that the only way to use jdk11 is via the compat3x port, which has been marked FORBIDDEN for a long time and has an unknown number of security holes. Basically, I think the removal of these ports will be going ahead unless someone comes up with a Really Good [TM] reason not to. They're basically just a maintenance burden at the moment. That being said, we're not removing the distribution files for jdk11, so if someone desperately needs to use an 8 year old JDK they can still download the binary, install compat3x and run it (assuming it does). Similarly for jdk12 the patchsets are still downloadable and there are manual compilation instructions included (if you can get one of the bootstrap JDKs to actually run). -- Greg Lewis Email : glewis@eyesbeyond.com Eyes Beyond Web : http://www.eyesbeyond.com Information Technology FreeBSD : glewis@FreeBSD.org From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Oct 2 23:04:03 2007 Return-Path: <owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG> Delivered-To: freebsd-java@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2042816A418 for <freebsd-java@FreeBSD.org>; Tue, 2 Oct 2007 23:04:03 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from m@obmail.net) Received: from unclebob.obfuscated.net (stewie.obfuscated.net [69.8.202.125]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id EB87113C474 for <freebsd-java@FreeBSD.org>; Tue, 2 Oct 2007 23:04:02 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from m@obmail.net) Received: from [10.0.1.196] (pool-96-228-136-165.tampfl.fios.verizon.net [96.228.136.165]) (using TLSv1 with cipher AES128-SHA (128/128 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by unclebob.obfuscated.net (Postfix) with ESMTP id 159561708B; Tue, 2 Oct 2007 18:42:52 -0400 (EDT) In-Reply-To: <20071002211357.GA48667@misty.eyesbeyond.com> References: <20071001100936.GA10202@rv-laptop> <fdt2av$a6g$1@sea.gmane.org> <20071002211357.GA48667@misty.eyesbeyond.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 (Apple Message framework v752.3) Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; delsp=yes; format=flowed Message-Id: <4A6D516D-0C49-478B-8060-83EC012E6C29@obmail.net> Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit From: Michael Conlen <m@obmail.net> Date: Tue, 2 Oct 2007 18:42:42 -0400 To: Greg Lewis <glewis@eyesbeyond.com> X-Mailer: Apple Mail (2.752.3) Cc: Mark Evenson <mark.evenson@gmx.at>, freebsd-java@FreeBSD.org Subject: Re: Removal of Java 1.1 and 1.2 support in the ports tree X-BeenThere: freebsd-java@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting Java to FreeBSD <freebsd-java.freebsd.org> List-Unsubscribe: <http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-java>, <mailto:freebsd-java-request@freebsd.org?subject=unsubscribe> List-Archive: <http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-java> List-Post: <mailto:freebsd-java@freebsd.org> List-Help: <mailto:freebsd-java-request@freebsd.org?subject=help> List-Subscribe: <http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-java>, <mailto:freebsd-java-request@freebsd.org?subject=subscribe> X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 02 Oct 2007 23:04:03 -0000 On Oct 2, 2007, at 5:13 PM, Greg Lewis wrote: > G'day Mark, > > On Tue, Oct 02, 2007 at 11:17:19AM +0200, Mark Evenson wrote: >>> More than a month ago, JDK ports related to Java 1.1 and 1.2 were >>> marked >>> DEPRECATED and scheduled for removal. It's not so much about testing compatibility: it's about generating the bytecode in the first place. The Sun jdk-1.1 compiler can produce some "interesting" bytecode that will pass the Microsoft VM verifier, whereas post-jdk-1.2 compilers producing classfiles that should be compatible (via the appropiate compiler switches, and making sure only classes that existed in jdk1.1 are referenced), are actually rejected. These look to be very recent updates as Sun don't appear to have yet completed the updates themselves (the bundled releases for Netbeans, etc. are still using the older versions). > JDK1.5 Update 12 is no longer available on Sun's website, the current update > is 13. > > JDK1.6 Update 2 is no longer available on Sun's website, the current update > is 3. > > Not sure if the changes in the update require any changes at all on port > side other than switching filenames to use. Sorry I can't be more helpful. Thanks for this information. I'll take a look at updating them as soon as I have a chance. I don't yet see source code updates, so jdk15 and jdk16 (which is still on update 1) will have to wait a bit longer. -- Greg Lewis Email : glewis@eyesbeyond.com Eyes Beyond Web : http://www.eyesbeyond.com Information Technology FreeBSD : glewis@FreeBSD.org From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Oct 5 18:53:18 2007 Return-Path: <owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG> Delivered-To: java@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6720816A41A for <java@FreeBSD.org>; Fri, 5 Oct 2007 18:53:18 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from glewis@eyesbeyond.com) Received: from misty.eyesbeyond.com (gerbercreations.com [71.39.140.16]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2959E13C465 for <java@FreeBSD.org>; Fri, 5 Oct 2007 18:53:17 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from glewis@eyesbeyond.com) Received: from misty.eyesbeyond.com (localhost.eyesbeyond.com [127.0.0.1]) by misty.eyesbeyond.com (8.13.1/8.13.3) with ESMTP id l95IrHxP070929; Fri, 5 Oct 2007 11:53:17 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from glewis@eyesbeyond.com) Received: (from glewis@localhost) by misty.eyesbeyond.com (8.13.1/8.13.3/Submit) id l95IrGeq070928; Fri, 5 Oct 2007 11:53:16 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from glewis@eyesbeyond.com) X-Authentication-Warning: misty.eyesbeyond.com: glewis set sender to glewis@eyesbeyond.com using -f Date: Fri, 5 Oct 2007 11:53:16 -0700 From: Greg Lewis <glewis@eyesbeyond.com> To: John Prather <john.c.prather@gmail.com> Message-ID: <20071005185316.GA70912@misty.eyesbeyond.com> References: <25aa95030710031626i7a4ff21fo8fa8da4910b7d4e9@mail.gmail.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <25aa95030710031626i7a4ff21fo8fa8da4910b7d4e9@mail.gmail.com> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.2.2i Cc: java@FreeBSD.org Subject: Re: linux sun jdk ports X-BeenThere: freebsd-java@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting Java to FreeBSD <freebsd-java.freebsd.org> List-Unsubscribe: <http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-java>, <mailto:freebsd-java-request@freebsd.org?subject=unsubscribe> List-Archive: <http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-java> List-Post: <mailto:freebsd-java@freebsd.org> List-Help: <mailto:freebsd-java-request@freebsd.org?subject=help> List-Subscribe: <http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-java>, <mailto:freebsd-java-request@freebsd.org?subject=subscribe> X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 05 Oct 2007 18:53:18 -0000 On Wed, Oct 03, 2007 at 04:26:54PM -0700, John Prather wrote: > JDK1.5 Update 12 is no longer available on Sun's website, the current update > is 13. > > JDK1.6 Update 2 is no longer available on Sun's website, the current update > is 3.
