I've run a VAIO with FreeBSD 5 and later 6 for a considerable time without any real problems. I've only moved off because the backlight is dying and (my own fault) the hard disc and CD/DVD drive is defunct. Sony out-of-warranty repair prices make it uneconomic to repair rather than replace. -- Jim Segrave jes@nl.demon.net From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Fri May 11 13:14:10 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C5AB416A403 for ; Fri, 11 May 2007 13:14:10 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from frank.ximo@gmail.com) Received: from wr-out-0506.google.com (wr-out-0506.google.com [64.233.184.239]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 813AF13C45E for ; Fri, 11 May 2007 13:14:10 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from frank.ximo@gmail.com) Received: by wr-out-0506.google.com with SMTP id 70so950669wra for ; Fri, 11 May 2007 06:14:09 -0700 (PDT) DKIM-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=beta; h=domainkey-signature:received:received:message-id:date:from:to:subject:in-reply-to:mime-version:content-type:references; b=dm00G1ILqlWtEdqZMM350oEXog75YCJPduFI6AR1omWlsKmRP25xYMply6WR51BZy9chYA9aZ0vfpDAFOCaHvwshohTPaHr8X4F9jHGVqkZ1OaSsri9Q6OJzOD+q87ZuWyOy2kjZw8VoeWXKNMWTVbvwr/+TUNsmeCF0si0aAhY= DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; c=nofws; d=gmail.com; s=beta; h=received:message-id:date:from:to:subject:in-reply-to:mime-version:content-type:references; b=iU0Ixi997ux/+ybhzD1td9monXUKWl6JS9xwAJw0xdlBADttQjRec0Oa/DQxgtcN25RChtMDxSsKGxRDBo2B4DDkk6F31nyhajwccTtoLjPj3mt5EqJvxeUcsytKhkgSed55RVSCCoOXsCMibJsv3odGKSF1wvG2oEXkW8iKxkU= Received: by 10.114.110.1 with SMTP id i1mr625103wac.1178887701527; Fri, 11 May 2007 05:48:21 -0700 (PDT) Received: by 10.114.66.20 with HTTP; Fri, 11 May 2007 05:48:21 -0700 (PDT) Message-ID: Date: Fri, 11 May 2007 12:48:21 +0000 From: ximo To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org In-Reply-To: <20070511120021.8B77416A47C@hub.freebsd.org> MIME-Version: 1.0 References: <20070511120021.8B77416A47C@hub.freebsd.org> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline X-Content-Filtered-By: Mailman/MimeDel 2.1.5 Subject: Re: freebsd-mobile Digest, Vol 215, Issue 1 X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 11 May 2007 13:14:10 -0000 2 weeks ago I've got an acer Aspire 5612 with nvidia graphics card well I'm using freesbie 2.0 and it uses the vesa driver also I needed a pcmcia wifi card I'm using now a connection n&c 108 WGTLMG and it seems working :) Ximo On 5/11/07, freebsd-mobile-request@freebsd.org < freebsd-mobile-request@freebsd.org> wrote: > > Send freebsd-mobile mailing list submissions to > freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org > > To tosubscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit > http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-mobile > or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to > freebsd-mobile-request@freebsd.org > > You can reach the person managing the list at > freebsd-mobile-owner@freebsd.org > > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific > than "Re: Contents of freebsd-mobile digest..." > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. I've been very happy with all my Thinkpads, having run FreeBSD on a 570, A21p, and now a T42p. I don't use the fancy 3d graphics, and the vanilla xorg server works well enough with the ATI graphics that I can use xrandr to have two displays. Suspending via ACPI works, the IBM branded Atheros wifi works fine, etc. Caveats: * Apparently the newer dual core chips aren't able to suspend and resume with FreeBSD. * Be sure to choose the IBM wifi, as the Intel wifi works poorly with FreeBSD. * In the modern world, the Intel graphics option has the best vendor support in the opensource driver. Also, this option seems to have the longest battery life. I've yet to find a Satellite user that likes their laptop. Even when running Windows XP on it. Getting non-Windows OSes running on them tends to be a frustrating endeavor. The Satellite Pro line is just slightly better, but not much. I haven't used FreeBSD on it (though my desktop and a couple of servers I admin are all 6.2-STABLE), but Ubuntu Linux is basically trouble free on my Satellite U205. I bought it in December and installed Ubuntu Edgy immediately (all hardware detected without trouble). The only issues are the fingerprint reader (never bothered to try) and suspend-to-ram suspend-to-disk works fine). Very sharp screen, light weight, nice keyboard feel, solidly built. I suppose this is a little off-topic since I haven't tried FreeBSD on it, but it's a relevant data point.
