I can get windows XP to connect fine, but FreeBSD seems to have a hard time with dhclient. The problem seems to be that the resort wants to connect as if I had issued the following instructions: ifconfig ndis0 inet 192.168.4.190 netmask 255.255.255.255 up route add default 192.168.4.1 If I do this by hand, I get an error message after the "route" command. I can get around it by typing: ifconfig ndis0 netmask 255.255.255.0 route add default 192.168.4.1 where the netmask was chosen somewhat arbitrarily, and then it all works fine. I get the feeling that "resortwifi" are doing something bad, perhaps taking an advantage of a bug in Windows XP that should reject this bogus DHCP assignment. Anyway, can any of you suggest a more permanent workaround? I bet I'll get messed up when my dhcp assignment gets renewed. One needs massive time reading manuals etc, only then to fail anyway, getting beyond 4.11. (Only 1 modern here takes 6.2). 4.11 is nominally dead, yet on many older laptops is all that Works. Newcomers may give up after 6.2 & dump FreeBSD, not knowing to use 4.11 with working { ATA access, Geom / FDISK, PCMCIA (ether & cdrom), PLIP }. Developers may use newer laptops or towers, but support for older laptops should not be So damaged as now, many older laptop are still fine as office X terminals, UPS/PBX status monitors etc. Suggestion: A collosal slow_and_safe option in loader.conf (like a BIOS has), so at least one can install, then until it's turned off, a grep at boot to mail root reporting machine was deliberately slowed to ensure install. Then installer can disable slow_and_safe and debug- edit on a working platform, not repetitively do 5 floppy installs typing screeds of "set" magic hopefully to loader. I'm analysing broken-ness since 4.11, & doc'ing it here: http://berklix.org/~jhs/hardware/laptops/ Inc. URL to PLIP failure (where I hope to later try back porting 4.11 PLIP src to 6.2). (Only 1 modern here takes 6.2). I can confirm this for my parents' (formerly owned by my brother) Mitac Mi-Note 6020. It works with 4.10, but wouldn't boot 5 or 6 or even the 7-snapshot I once tried. I may try with the June snapshots (but how do you backup a computer whose only network connection is an 11MBit wireless card?). This is a Celeron 366 with 320 or so MB RAM. It just panics during probing. The reason I didn't report this is that a) it currently works (running StarOffice 7 on KDE) b) it's physically so broken (all hinges are so hard to open/close that they are broken out of the case on all sides - the thing is sitting in a wooden frame that my father built ;-) c) I also run FreeBSD on servers. I'd rather like developers to spend their limited time on getting it to work better on the latest server- hardware and on newer laptops (which are arriving every quarter) > > 4.11 is nominally dead, yet on many older laptops is all that Works. Personally, I suspect really bad ACPI-implementations as the reason for the kernel-panics I get (no success with safe-mode, ACPI or no ACPI). And 4.x _is_ dead. Not only nominally, but really. No fixes. Ports don't build. End of game. RIP. (I've got a server with 4.11 in a colo 500 km away that is waiting for a 'decision') > Newcomers may give up after 6.2 & dump FreeBSD, not knowing to use > 4.11 > with working { ATA access, Geom / FDISK, PCMCIA (ether & cdrom), > PLIP }. > Newcomers today will either have one of those 600 Euro el-cheapo laptops from one of the big electronic-supermarket-chains, or will have had the sense to buy at least a Pentium3-Mobile-class system on ebay (can be had very cheaply, usually works like built for FreeBSD). The other old laptop I own (a Dell Inspiron 4000, Celeron 800 with 512 MB RAM) runs 6.x almost as fast as my Pentium-M 1.6 with 1GB RAM. So to conclude: I'm all for supporting slow hardware (WRAP, Soekris - you name it) - but when we talk about hardware that was "new" seven or more years ago (and with most problems probably caused by BIOS- bugs), I can also support drawing a final stroke. cheers, Rainer -- Rainer Duffner CISSP, LPI, MCSE rainer@ultra-secure.de From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Jun 13 17:48:37 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6124016A473 for ; Wed, 13 Jun 2007 17:48:37 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from news@verein.uugrn.org) Received: from up.uugrn.org (up.uugrn.org [195.49.138.11]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E0CED13C4BD for ; Wed, 13 Jun 2007 17:48:36 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from news@verein.uugrn.org) Received: from verein.uugrn.org (root@verein.uugrn.org [195.49.138.99]) by up.uugrn.org (8.13.3/8.13.3) with ESMTP id l5DHIanX048624 for ; Wed, 13 Jun 2007 19:19:29 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from news@verein.uugrn.org) Received: from verein.uugrn.org (news@verein.uugrn.org [195.49.138.99]) by verein.uugrn.org (8.13.8/8.13.8) with ESMTP id l5DHITPk086831 for ; Wed, 13 Jun 2007 19:18:36 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from news@verein.uugrn.org) Received: (from news@localhost) by verein.uugrn.org (8.13.8/8.13.6/Submit) id l5DHIThZ086830 for freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org; Wed, 13 Jun 2007 19:18:29 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from news) To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Path: not-for-mail From: Michael Lestinsky Newsgroups: mail2news.freebsd_org.mobile Date: Wed, 13 Jun 2007 17:18:29 +0000 (UTC) Organization: Unix User Group Rhein-Neckar e.V. Then I'll send-pr a diff to extend chance of other older laptops booting. & will roll new floppies(*) & put up for ftp; (no prob, done releases before). > And 4.x _is_ dead. "The afterlife Sir" ;-) (Restaurant At The End Of The Universe, Hitch Hikers Guide To The Galaxy). Give me the after life then ;-) FREEBSD-6.2 is not much use on only 1 laptop here, FreeBSD-4.11 is more use on 4 or 5, & NetBSD-3.1 now on 1 to start, & to go on every one FREEBSD-6.2 fails on. One pitch for BSD (& Linux) to Micro$oft users, is: BSD/Linux doesn't Need the expensive new hardware that Micro$oft demands, so it's easy to find a spare old machine to try it on, before switching the main machines. If FreeBSD continues cold shouldering legacy, NetBSD could fill the slot. It's not ecological to keep ditching old laptops, only wealthy G8 employees can afford that. Developers in less wealthy environs are more likely to develop on an OS less hostile to older hardware. > (I've got a server with 4.11 in a colo 500 km away that is waiting > for a 'decision') Me too, will be a hastle I expect 4 to 6, (different boot & FS), might hang & need access, (but 3 Km not 500 here :-), but easy compared to laptops. -- Julian Stacey. I have IBM Thinkpad T42 (2753-5TU) which had no problem with VGA output when I gave a presentation or two. The included 802.11bg card, Intel 2200BG, requires ndis, with which I was having problem in terms of WPA & DHCP. BTW, according to others' postings IBM [abg] card would be a better substitute. Currently, I use "Belkin My Essentials Wireless G" card with ath driver without any problems. DRI works, its fairly snappy whilst compiling (its main use; I write BSD based apps in C++, so it gets quite a pounding), battery life is good (~2hrs with workload), sound works. It comes with an intel 3945(a)bg wifi card which doesn't work (yet). Best of all (better than my home workstation) it even has a serial port for remote ddb - dead handy. charset="iso-8859-2" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Hi, I have noticed the following problem when using x11-servers/synaptics with Xorg 7.2. Whenever switching VTs or suspending / resuming, Synaptics support gets disabled. The user notices that scrolling, dragging does not work, and there is no min_movement anymore. The problem is due to the fact that Xorg 7.2 has a build-in pointer device, which is "hard to disable" (i.e. it gets loaded even when there is another core pointer). During VT switch or suspending / resuming, this build-in driver somehow catches /dev/psm0 before synaptics does. http://www.stz-softwaretechnik.de/~ke/touchscreen/evtouch.html suggests how to disable the build-in driver. I have attached a patch which augments pkg-message. May I also suggest to move synaptics from x11-servers to x11-drivers? Should I send a PR? Thanks, Cristi. ------=_20070616213451_52797 Content-Type: text/x-patch; name="synaptics.patch" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="synaptics.patch" diff -ur synaptics.orig/Makefile synaptics/Makefile --- synaptics.orig/Makefile Thu Jun 14 17:07:21 2007 +++ synaptics/Makefile Sat Jun 16 21:11:16 2007 @@ -7,8 +7,8 @@ PORTNAME= synaptics PORTVERSION= 0.14.6 -PORTREVISION= 1 -CATEGORIES= x11-servers +PORTREVISION= 2 +CATEGORIES= x11-drivers MASTER_SITES= http://web.telia.com/~u89404340/touchpad/files/:synaptics DISTFILES= ${PORTNAME}-${PORTVERSION}${EXTRACT_SUFX}:synaptics \ ${X_DISTFILES:C/$/:x11/} diff -ur synaptics.orig/pkg-message synaptics/pkg-message --- synaptics.orig/pkg-message Sun Mar 19 12:22:19 2006 +++ synaptics/pkg-message Sat Jun 16 21:18:25 2007 @@ -86,3 +86,39 @@ /etc/xorg.conf (or /etc/XF86Config) --------------- =============================================================================== + +To setup Synaptics support in Xorg 7.2 you must use something like this: + +--- begin /usr/local/etc/X11/xorg.conf +Section "Module" + : + Load "synaptics" +EndSection + +Section "InputDevice" + Identifier "Synaptics_Touchpad" + Driver "synaptics" + + Option "Device" "/dev/psm0" + Option "Protocol" "psm" + + Option "CorePointer" +EndSection + +# Dummy device to disable build-in default pointer device +Section "InputDevice" + Identifier "dummy" + Driver "void" +EndSection + +Section "ServerLayout" + : + InputDevice "dummy" "CorePointer" +EndSection + : +--- end /usr/local/etc/X11/xorg.conf + +Failing to do so will disable Synaptics support when switching VTs or +suspending / resuming. + +=============================================================================== ------=_20070616213451_52797-- From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Jun 16 20:35:12 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: mobile@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id DEE9216A400; Sat, 16 Jun 2007 20:35:12 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from dan@dan.emsphone.com) Received: from dan.emsphone.com (dan.emsphone.com [199.67.51.101]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4445113C48A; Sat, 16 Jun 2007 20:34:51 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from dan@dan.emsphone.com) Received: (from dan@localhost) by dan.emsphone.com (8.14.1/8.13.8) id l5GJxdDu078393; Sat, 16 Jun 2007 14:59:39 -0500 (CDT) (envelope-from dan) Date: Sat, 16 Jun 2007 14:59:39 -0500 From: Dan Nelson To: Hidetoshi Shimokawa Message-ID: <20070616195939.GE30806@dan.emsphone.com> References: <46734A3E.3010903@gddsn.org.cn> <626eb4530706160525o54234621s2de098e64cdeb4fe@mail.gmail.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <626eb4530706160525o54234621s2de098e64cdeb4fe@mail.gmail.com> X-OS: FreeBSD 6.2-STABLE User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.15 (2007-04-06) Cc: current@freebsd.org, ?????? , mobile@freebsd.org Subject: Re: kernel panic with pccard insert on recent 7.0 CURRENT X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 16 Jun 2007 20:35:13 -0000 In the last episode (Jun 16), Hidetoshi Shimokawa said: > On 6/16/07, ?????? wrote: > > i always get Fatal trap while insert a pccard with recent 7.0 > > current.
